Nothing Like A Little Friendly Competition

Everything huuuuurts.

This weekend was packed with good and fun things (at the expense of sleep and my safety at times), which explains why I’m posting this today instead of yesterday. What’s been happenin’!?

Friday

‘Twas a pretty standard day— class, bible study, gym (two rounds of this workout— another one of my faves @Jo), work, “trying” to do homework in my dorm on a Friday night.

Saturday

Are you ever up in the middle of the night and tired enough that you can’t read a book but “on” enough that your brain can’t shut up? That was me this day.

I must keep telling myself that I am indeed thankful for functioning kidneys.

Saturday was a big day because some folks at the Catholic Center (myself included) participated in a fun, athletic competition called the “St. Sebastian Cup”. My friend Lauren sent me a snapchat of herself that morning making a protein shake with the caption: “Are you scared?”

I had overnight oats, so no, I was not scared.

The competition consisted of three games of Ultimate Frisbee…

My team didn’t score a single point in all three games… but we had HEART. Unfortunately, heart doesn’t get you points.

But then there was this banana relay race. We all had to jump across a field and back with a banana between our knees, then run with the banana between partners without using our hands, and finally eat the banana.

EXPERT. But only good enough for second place.

Next came the painful part. We played two games of capture the flag, and I may or may not have been plowed over by one of my teammates when we were both sprinting to tag the same person. It all happened in slow motion, and before I knew it, we were both eating dirt and my right hip was talkin’ to me.

But as any elite athlete would, we carried on with the competition.

Lastly, we had tug o’ war with a thin, slippery nylon strap. Safe? Not at all. Blood was shed. Maybe it helps that St. Sebastian is a martyr? (Too dark?)

Anyway, my team got fourth (aka last), and Rachel’s team got first.

It was a mighty fun time though, and we all went to the dining hall to feast on good food, including some bomb bread pudding.

At night, I attended a Women’s Retreat about being uniquely made. It was a lovely, heartwarming way to end a hard day of “friendly” competition (things got pretty spicy at some points!).

The lovely ladies running the retreat made us vegan sweet potato chili! I un-veganized it with cheese and sour cream 🙂

I did some reading for class back at home afterwards, and I kept falling asleep. Rachel kept waking me up and motivating me to finish my homework like a good friend. But I wanted to sleep.

Sunday

I think it’s safe to say that everyone who participated in the St. Sebastian Cup woke up moaning in pain on Sunday morning. Convo with my girl, Lauren:

The pain was even worse two days later.

But Sunday was a beautiful day for productivity, Mass, and National Siblings Day!

And then there was Monday, which was a solid day all around. We had stretch and massage day in dance class, so that was GREAT.

Weekly Moves and Grooves XXVIII {Fitness with Friends}

The pressure is finally on.

I was telling you all on Thursday that I wasn’t quite feeling the pressure to study for finals, but it has definitely hit me, don’t you worry. One more week—we can do this! Moving and grooving (especially outside when the sun is out) has been a wonderful way to take a study break and get the blood flowing in between long periods of sitting.

This week involved more workouts with friends (only two, but that’s still more than usual). I should work out with buddies more often— it’s twice as fun and motivating!

4 rounds:

  • 6 chair mountain climber complexes (10 decline mountain climbers ➔ step off to one side ➔ pushup)
  • 20 tuck jumps
  • 10 pushups to T
  • 20 jump lunges
  • 10 burpees
  • 20 modified v-ups

This took a little over 20 minutes, and I was beat from those chair mountain climber complexes.

Wednesday

squats with PJ + assisted pull-ups and burpees + ab tabata

This was my first time ever having a squat buddy! PJ saw that I was at the squat rack and came over to be my spotter (which I guess I should have more often?), and we ended up taking turns squatting our hearts legs out. I don’t remember how many sets I did, but I started with 115# and worked up to 135#.

PJ was squatting somewhere between 200-300# (he’s been in the 1000 pound club— the total pounds of his bench, squat, and deadlift were over 1000 lbs…actually, 1200 lbs!).

Whatever the weight, we were both waddling the next day.

I also did 10 min. EMOM (every minute on the minute):

  • 3-5 assisted pull-ups (70-80# assistance)
  • 5 burpees

Then 4 rounds of 20 seconds work, 10 seconds rest:

Hey, hey look at that. I ran! As usual, I was having an internal debate as to whether I wanted to run or not, but the weather was perfect, and I thought it would be a good study break/shake out for my sore legs.

I ran in the afternoon and just took a screenshot of this at night, in case you were wondering about the time.

I wasn’t planning on running negative splits (let’s be real, I don’t usually plan on running, period), but I was chasing this random guy towards the end who was running slightly faster than my pace. Also, starting off slow and steady definitely works well.

Saturday

ultimate frisbee with friends

Wowza, this was a WORKOUT, but it was incredibly fun! I can’t do sports that involve hand-eye coordination usually, but I can do frisbee. We were all smoked after playing, but it was just what we needed during study period.

All my workouts caught up with me by Saturday afternoon after frisbee, so I was walking slower than a snail for the rest of the day. The only thing I wanted to do was eat, foam roll, and sleep. I did one of the three. Guess which one!

Behind the Scenes #28: My Strange Addiction

Thinking-Out-Loud

1) Another reason to love Thinking Out Loud: I don’t have to think of an intro. The DREADED INTRO.

2) I’ve been using a weekly planner to get back into the groove of physically writing down reminders, rather than typing them on my phone. There’s something about putting a pen to paper and making an actual checkmark that makes me feel so official and accomplished.

Bonus points if I’m using a retractable ballpoint pen.

3) I did 300 double unders on Tuesday, and heyyyyoooo that stuff is harder than it sounds. I also did it after some fun moves inside that involved pushups, triceps dips, and super lame toes to bar (those were also a struggle), so my arms were noodly. It was fun though! It was drizzling too, which added serenity to a rather difficult jump rope experience.

4) Shoulders are sore from said moves.

5) Along with jumping rope and swimming at the beach in the rain, I’ve added ultimate frisbee to the list.

6) I could stalk Kath’s old blog posts and Cait’s Instagram posts ALL DAY because of their delicious-looking food and clean photography. It’s “my strange addiction.”

7) I tried hemming one of my shirts for a whole hour the other day, and it looked like a 5-year-old did it. Actually, a 5-year-old could have probably done a better job. My mother laughed at it with me, and we decided to take out the thread completely and just let it hang without the thread, because anything would look better than my sewing job.

8) My friend gatherings with Jeannine, Je’lyn, and Veronica seem to always revolve around ice cream. I’m going to agree with Jeannine with her statement, “I’m not opposed to ice cream.” Just putting that out there, but I think y’all knew that.

9) Waterworks started flowing when my parents were talking about how my brother probably won’t be living at home for good ever again. We were just dancing to Pokemon songs in front of a video camera, like, YESTERDAY.

But this conversation was literally yesterday.
