Fascinating Friday Links #34

Hey there!

Hmm, maybe these last 5 weeks of school won’t be too bad if the weeks keep passing this quickly! There are still a lot of papers to write and tests to take though, so I can’t check out now (Ha— who am I kidding? 😉 ). In all seriousness though, I’m starting to feel the onset of separation anxiety when I have to leave my friends. Maybe I shouldn’t talk about the end of the year yet.

I’m also thinking shorts/capri weather is finally becoming a permanent thing around here! I need to paint my naked toe nails if I want to wear sandals though. I am not blessed with pretty toes.

And for today’s moves, I basically did a similar arm workout and to last Sunday’s plus a few minutes on the rope climbing machine and Julie’s 8 minute ab tabata.

Fantastic Fats

Good morning!

Just as last week flew by, this weekend was over *snap* like that. But that just means that it was filled with fun, right?

Katie‘s roundin’ up the marvelousness!

You know what it was also filled with? FATS! Definitely the best macro, in my opinion. Fats=fun. I definitely used to fear fats, thinking that I would become as squishy as a jellyfish:

But after a while, I realized how BORING eating is without fats! I mean, have you seen the copious amounts of peanut butter, avocado, eggs and cheese I consume? And they don’t necessarily turn me into Squishy. Arman also hosted a fun fats fiesta on his blog a little while back, but I didn’t get the chance to join it then. You should check out his post, but be careful not to drown in butter when you get there.

Let’s take a look at the fantastic fats {and activities while we’re at it} of this weekend, shall we?

Friday

First off, I ate peanut butter in my breakfast and snack:

On the way to the Coffee House performance, I was so glamorously scarfing down a piece of avocado toast with smoked salmon and this yogurt sauce. I also got yogurt sauce on my purse AND on my chorus teacher, because I’m Alison, and I paint my world with Greek yogurt.

Saturday

My dad took me as his guest to a lovely Pro-Life breakfast event, so I went sweet and savory with a corn muffin, fruit, French toast, and some scrambled eggs.

I also went home and ate a spoonful of almond butter because breakfast is incomplete without nut butter.

Dance company had a short and sweet lecture/demonstration at a nursing home, which went well! But one sweet, elderly lady was telling me that she thinks Japanese people are more graceful dancers than others and that white girls are confused. I think she was trying to compliment me…but I’m not even Japanese. I’m probably more white than I am Asian, come to think of it. (➔ Maybe not. I just commented “yum!” on my mom’s picture of cooked tendons from a Chinese restaurant.)

For late lunch, I had seafood salad for some omega-3 fatty acids (right?) + a side of avocado oil-roasted brussels sprouts a la mother:

After Saturday evening Mass, I came home hungry for some rice, broccoli, and coconut curry chicken of which I failed to take a picture because a) it wasn’t that interesting and b) I was hungry.

Sunday

I got to sleep in a wee bit before heading to teach Sunday school, but I also had time to make a breakfast that I hadn’t had in a solid two weeks: Hot banana oats with Greek yogurt and pepita sunseed butter!

I ate this while watching The Pioneer Woman on Food Network (TV is back after Lent!), and the perfect Sunday morning was fulfilled.

Fast forward through teaching third graders about the canonization of Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII (WOOHOO!) and I’m at the gym since my dad offered to drop me off on his way to the gym (we go to separate gyms— logistical reasons for when he goes to work). I hadn’t been in weeks! I’m actually going to cancel my membership soon because I’m going to college this fall, I enjoy working out at home/outdoors, and I need to slow down workouts anyhow.

Moves:

5 min arc trainer warmup, then 3 rounds of each:

  • 15-20 TRX rows + 10 pike pushups
  • 10 TRX bicep curls + 20 tricep dips
  • 10 pushups (of different variations) + 20 supermans

Then an 8 minute ab tabata, which was two rounds of weighted Russian twists, toe touches, cross knee planks, ankle touches, plank toe touches, leg lifts, spiderman plank, and plank.

I also walked on the treadmill for 25 minutes while waiting for my dad to come pick me up!

I was “hangry” when I got home, and I had something awesome in mind for lunch (I was fantasizing about it while on the treadmill): AVOCADO GRILLED CHEESE with sriracha chicken + unpictured brussels sprouts with hummus.

When I dipped the grilled cheese into that sriracha sauce➔ HOLY MOLY.

An hour or so later, I ate a banana with sunflower seed butter, and then another spoonful of almond butter 🙂

After a couple of hours of research and blog business (did you notice something different about the domain??), I was hungry for dinnah! I was feeling breakfast for dinner, so I whipped up a fat-tastic meal, which was an omelette with spinach and feta + avocado toast.

The ketchup came out in squirts, so it looks like a massacre, I know. It was delicious though!

Well, I’m off to go eat some dried figs + Greek yogurt while finishing up some more homework. I hope you all have a fantastic week ahead!

My First Time {At Chipotle}

Good morning!

This is the last week before spring break, and I can hardly stand it. Last week I said I had two field trips and a college visit on Friday, but that has decreased to one field trip and a college visit. I decided to pull out of one of the trips so I wouldn’t be too stressed over making up work.

Not gonna lie, I had a mini breakdown on Saturday morning because I was overwhelmed by all the things I had to do this weekend and the fact that I haven’t been getting that much sleep. Not insomnia or anything. Just overall, I was fatigued and not a fan of getting up early on Saturday and Sunday after long days and late nights. I mean, everything that happened this weekend was super fun, but at the same time, I just wanted to slow down and rest. I didn’t need to cry, but I just vented to madre, and I felt much better afterwards.

It’s weird— I wouldn’t cry if I didn’t have anyone to talk to, but once I get the words flowing, the tears follow shortly after.

Friday

I received this Polar Loop activity tracker in the mail on Thursday because I won it from Gina‘s giveaway a while ago (luckiest win I’ve ever scored)!

I don’t need it for any reason in particular, but I’ve been wearing it for the past few days to see what it has to say about my activity throughout the day. Since I don’t have the heart rate monitor with it, I know it doesn’t show the most accurate readings, especially when it comes to calories (seriously, I don’t pay attention to those counts at all). I don’t completely know how to work the thing yet in terms of setting daily goals and such; I apparently need to walk, jog and jump, like, an extra hour every day, even if I’ve been dancing and walking ALL DAY. Yeah, no. I’ll probably end up giving it to mom for her walking/running ventures.

It makes for a pretty sleek watch though!

Moves

I headed to the gym after school to do a bodyweight upper body workout that looked like this:

5 min. row warmup + supersets of the following:

  • 15 TRX rows + 10 TRX pike pushups
  • 20 tricep dips + different pushup variations
  • 10 TRX bicep curls + 10 BOSU pushups
  • 40 sec. pulling down on the rope machine + 40 sec. pulling up on rope machine

I may or may not have done some core exercises. I forget!

After a quick, but necessary, afternoon nap, my friends from company, Livv and Jane, went to our other friends’ (from company) senior high school musical production of Legally Blonde! We actually bought the last three tickets available, so we were sitting in the very back corner of the theater, laughing our heads off and making comments at everything like little rascals. 😉 It was such a great show though!

Saturday

Up and at ’em at 8:20 AM (okay, that’s not that early, but this girl was still exhausted) for an altar server meeting at 8:45 AM.

After getting back, I made a comforting bowl of banana oats with Greek yogurt and sunflower seed butter. The usual.

I maneuver my spoon to save the nut butter for last 😉

Then it was off to assisting dance class at 11 AM, followed by my very last Saturday modern class of my high school career. 😦 It was a great, challenging class. After that, most of company (some people had prior engagements) walked over to the train station to go the city. We had a performance at Peridance that evening!

Once we got to Grand Central, we subbed it over to Union Square, where I had this stuff for the first time:

Is Chipotle popular or something?

I finally “lost my Chipotle virginity” (<—my dad is so creeped out that I said that), and it was fantastic. The guac mountain was as good as people say it is. I must have gotten a little excited and asked for way too much food, because this bowl easily turned into THREE meals (lunch, dinner, and then lunch the next day) for myself. Now that’s a deal!

We made a Starbucks stop and then hung out at the park for a bit before going to the Peridance Center for warmup, tech rehearsal, and the performance, which started at 8:30 PM. Luckily, we were third in the program, so once we finished performing, we booked it out of there. Girls were beat from the long day.

Shake Shack vanilla frozen custard. Creaminess factor was unreal.

Sunday

That alarm could not have sounded worse at 7:40 AM. Dad and I had a religious education faculty meeting at 8:30, so that happened, followed by teaching per usual. I do love teaching, so there is no complaining there! I attended 11:30 AM Mass afterwards.

It was an absolutely gorgeous day yesterday, so I took a short study break to do some sun salutations and random burpees outside. The Polar Loop was also urging me to move around, so I thought, heyyy why not? 

A two hour nap also took place, which was just what my body needed.

I baked.

I did homework.

I read blogs.

I typed this.

I ate dinner.

And then I realized: Life is wonderful. And I’m such a drama queen for crying about it.

That Time I Forgot to Bring My Shoes to the Gym

Good morning!

The first day back at school didn’t make me cringe yesterday, which I consider a huge win. (I actually don’t mind school all that much. I feel like it sounds like I dread it, but that’s not always the case.) I was also happy to see my friends again since I was basically antisocial (besides social media) during winter break. 

Lunch at school means that sandwiches are back in style, and they really are stylish this week! Check out this marbled rye/pumpernickel bread. (Thanks for making them, Ma 🙂 )

Rye is saltier than normal bread, so it’s not my favorite, but I’ve always wanted to say, “I’m having chicken, cheese, and lettuce on rye.” It just seems so…classic sitcom deli scene.

Anyway, moving onto story time. School was dandy, and I already had my gym bag in the car so I could head to the gym directly from school as I normally do. Admittedly, I was even wearing my workout shirt under my sweater (from Binghamton last week!) so I wouldn’t have to change when I got to the gym. Lazy butt I am.

I just wanted it for the style. Look at the button + collar! It also looks like I’m about to wink at you…but don’t flatter yourself. 😉 <— there’s your wink.

I drove all the way to the gym, excited to get movin’ and groovin’, and I even sat in the parking lot for a few minutes to quickly chow on a granola bar before going inside. Then I started getting out of the car when I realized…aw sugar nuts. I forgot my gym shoes.

Do I go back home and get them? I’m already here…

*Sigh* I’m gonna go inside anyway. Then we’ll see where it goes from there.

So I went inside, changed, and stared at my locker for a good 5 minutes. My mind went back and forth between staying and just going home, but I knew that I wanted to just do some TRX and upper body exercises anyway— nothing that involved machinery or weights or anything that could put my little piggies in peril.

I also had some thick, black socks on, so I just decided to go for it. I worked out at the gym without shoes. I completely understand that it’s not the safest thing to do, but I steered clear of any cardio machines (except the rower for 5 minutes), and I just did my thing on the turf area of the gym.

I was definitely afraid that people would give me judgy stares, but no one seemed to notice or care. I wasn’t running on the treadmill with my socks or anything. When I looked in the mirror for a quick second, it didn’t even look like I wasn’t wearing shoes since my socks contrasted my workout clothes so drastically. I even thought that my socks could pass for those flat, toe-sock-looking running shoes. Maybe a few people had a double take when looking at my feet, but I just did my thang (with caution of course).

I kinda felt like a rebel though. Working out with JUST socks. Obviously, my life is riveting! 😉

As for my actual moves, I did supersets of upper body exercises, using the TRX for some of them. Then I finished with another ab tabata that included v-ups, leg lifts, side crunches, Spiderman planks, and knee cross tuck planks. My core was burnin’! I love that the tabata format makes for a great workout in a short period of time (usually only 8-10 minutes).

After my shoe-less workout, I had a delicious pair to refuel: apples and almond butter. I’m really starting to like almond butter now! I used to look down upon it as the inferior cousin to peanut butter, but I’ve learned to be more open-minded to it, and I’m finding it tastier and tastier every day. Amanda, the almond butter lover, would be thrilled to hear that 🙂

Well, hopefully I won’t have a brain fart and forget to take my gym shoes with me again. At least I know that it is indeed possible to work out at the gym sans shoes without getting death stares. But seriously, I probably won’t do that again if I do forget my shoes in the future. It’s just a little uncomfortable (mentally, not physically).
