Lonely Girl Thoughts

Thinking-Out-Loud

with the amazing Amanda ♥

1) I didn’t make anything red, white, and blue on Fourth of July in Boston, so I made this blueberry strawberry banana bread in muffin form a few days late to celebrate…

DSC_1607 DSC_1609

DSC_1614

…except I didn’t make them to be patriotic at all, I just had all the ingredients and I wanted muffins.

2) My service as a juror is finally finished (for the next 4-6 years at least)! It lasted three days. I can tell you now that the case was pretty minor: a girl and her mother sued the girl’s middle school for employee negligence, which they claimed caused the girl to get injured in gym class. It happened almost four years ago.

3) Although the process was long, slow, and not the most exciting thing in the world, I still walked out with a smile on my face because it was such an interesting process. I literally kept saying to myself, “This is so cool.”

(P.S. Solely based on the evidence provided, the jury’s verdict was in favor of the plaintiff—  the girl.)

4) Speaking of injustices, I was assaulted by a fly on Tuesday night. I was about to dry my hair after my shower when I heard bzzzzzzzzz.

I ran away and turned off the light in the bathroom in an attempt to get it to follow the light into the hallway. It did indeed fly out, but then it flew super close to my ear again and I fell to the floor to avoid it. Yes, ladies and gents, the fly knocked me down.

6) My friend told me that I’m at least twice the size of the fly, so I can take it. I replied that I’m also at least twice the size of HIV, rhinovirus, and pollen, but IT DOESN’T MATTER. They’re still evil.

7) I’m craving saucy meatballs. Luckily I’ll be able to get some at the local church’s Festa Italiana tomorrow!

photo 1 copy 2

8) Thank God for technology. I know it’s good to “unplug,” and my mind/body knows when it needs to do so, but social media, music, TV and YouTube are currently keeping me company during my lonely hours.

I miss my friends in Boston. Daliza, come be my friend.

9) I need to manage my time better in the morning. I like taking my time to eat breakfast, catch up on blogs, meditate, and pack lunch in the morning, but more often than not, I’m running out the door because I’m a couple minutes behind schedule. I think I just need to prioritize my tasks before going on the computer.

10) Does anyone ever eat regular yogurt anymore? As in, NON-Greek yogurt? I bought a tub of regular full fat yogurt since the store didn’t have plain full fat Greek yogurt (at a cheap price at least…I love Fage, but my wallet does not).

DSC_1616

To be honest, Dannon regular is only a little thinner than 0% Chobani, but not that much more. The only real difference is the lower protein content, which I know is a deal breaker for a lot of protein fanatics out there. 8 grams of protein in the regular yogurt does the trick for me though!

Hope you all have a fabulous pre-Friday 🙂

So tell me:

How are you with bugs?

I’m craving ______.

Do you ever eat regular yogurt?

Behind the Scenes #10: I Could Be at the Olympics

Good morning! I’m feelin’ some more behind the scenes action this Thursday.

Thinking-Out-Loud

Head over to Amanda‘s blog for more thoughts from some great noggins

1. Ladies figure skating last night?! Naturally, the ladies single competition is my favorite event of the winter Olympics. All I have to say about last night is: Yuna Kim is a goddess, Gracie Gold is a sweetheart (go USA!), and I felt so sad for Mao Asada and Yulia Lipnitskaya. Oh and Adelina Sotnikova literally came outta nowhere!

yuna_kim.jpg.size.xxlarge.letterbox

[source]

If you didn’t watch skating last night, I apologize for possibly making you feel out of the loop. Or maybe you don’t even care. I’m moving on now.

2. Actually, I’m still talking about skating, BUT it’s a fun fact that doesn’t have to do with last night’s competition. When I was still competitively figure skating, my dad told me that I should work towards making it to the 2014 Olympics. That seemed like an insanely long ways away at the time he told me that, but here we are in the midst of the 2014 Olympics. And here I am, sitting on my couch…not there. Guatever, I’m still a superstar.

3. BREAKFAST YESTERDAY. *Jumping up and down* My mom and I picked up some Thomas’ Banana Bread English muffins from Wegmans at Binghamton over the weekend, and I tried them out yesterday morning.

DSC_7677 DSC_7679

‘Twas as scrumdiddlyumptious as it looks. I topped one half with almond butter and the other half with sunflower seed butter. Plus a small bowl of Greek yogurt and sliced bananas, cinnamon, and nutmeg as an accompaniment. Three words: I want more. Although the English muffin isn’t quite like the real stuff, I love the hint of banana bread goodness in it. The texture is doughy too, which I love!

4. I really feel like I’ve been doing absolutely nothing this winter break. I stayed home yesterday and Tuesday, and both days involved the same things. I did homework, exercised (the only time I left home was to the gym yesterday), cleaned, read blogs, blogged, watched the Olympics, and ate. I’m totally not complaining though. I know I’ll be craving this down time once spring comes— I was updating my calendar yesterday…I’m a little scared.

Kinda true.

5. Thanks to those who reassured me that I’m making the right decision about not going to the Blend Retreat this year. I want to be able to enjoy my time with my school friends and blends, but I know that my time with each will be better spent if I’m not trying to rush from one place to another. I guess my last days of high school are kinda important too. I’m definitely hoping to go to Blend next year though!

6. New addiction alert: pistachios. Luckily, we have the unshelled ones so it takes longer to shove pop them into my mouth.

7. I’ve been loving this Coffitivity app on both my iPhone and Macbook. I saw that Emily was using it a while back, and I loved the concept of it. You know how some people get the most work done at a coffee shop? The gentle murmur and bustle acts as a nice background noise, right? Well, Coffitivity provides that background noise for you on demand! So even though my AP Calc homework took, like, half a day to do, at least I was able to imagine myself in a cute coffee shop while I was at it.

8. It RAINED yesterday. Hallelujah! I would have crawled into a hole if it snowed more. Then again, the snow is practically burying us alive, so I wouldn’t even have to do that. (I’m so melodramatic.) The downside to the rain is that everything is slushy and nasty outside now.

9. Do you ever have a lyric/line/phrase stuck in your head that always pops up in every situation? Well, for me right now, that would be #lololololololololol. I don’t even say it out loud, but it’s always just ringing in my head when something funny happens. Speaking of that hashtag video, there’s a new one now. It’s not as good as the original with JT.

10. My brain was absolute mush yesterday. I just felt like my brain was working super slowly, and it just took a wee bit longer to process everything. I slept and ate well, so I dunno what was going on. Hopefully my brain is a little sharper today!

Alright, the noggin has {mostly} been emptied out. I hope you all have a joyful Thursday!

So tell me:

Figure skating last night?

Which food can you not keep your hands off right now?

What kind of background noise (if any) do you prefer when you’re working/studying?

Ever have a lyric/line/phrase stuck in your head?

Behind the Scenes #9: Burpee Withdrawal

Thinking-Out-Loud

Thinking out loud with the lovely Amanda today!

1. No school today. ‘Nough said.

One downside to the white stuff is the lack of road space. There are already those people that park on the narrow side streets, and now the buildup of snow is slowly bottlenecking the roads storm after storm. The polar bears should just come live in New York. There are enough glaciers here now.

I Has Snow

2. I miss burpees. Yeah. Ever since making the commitment to myself to keep my workouts low in intensity, I have not done burpees in the context of a workout. I have done some for fun here and there when I’m taking a study break or something, but I’m feeling a little burpee withdrawal…?

Screen Shot 2014-02-12 at 10.08.03 PM

3. That being said, I am still doing some strength-focused bodyweight exercises right now. I’ve found that the extra strength training definitely makes a positive difference in how I dance. Yesterday I did this new leg exercise because I wanted to mix things up a bit: single leg squat holds on a BOSU.

[source]

Except I was not smiling.

I probably looked like a shaking leaf on that thing, but it was a great challenge!

4. Winter sports look so treacherous. Pairs skating lifts, snowboarding/skiing wipeouts (we just watched Kelly Clark take a major blow on the half pipe— yikes)…even speed skating. Blades are flyin’ everywhere, and I’m terrified that someone is going to trip over someone else. You’d think I would be a little more chill since I used to be a figure skater, but I’ve had some scary falls myself…that weren’t even that bad, relatively speaking.

5. On a similar note, the figure skating commentators are drama queens. As soon as one skater falls, one says, “Wow. That was just disastrous. So unfortunate.” Two minutes later, another one chimes in saying, “Knowing their dream has vanished, they’re still skating with all their hearts.” And then on the last fall: “If you’re gonna go down, you might as well go down swingin’.” “Yep, that was a big swing.”

“After the humiliation of being shut out in Vancouver, the Russians get first and second!”

I mean, these comments are pretty true, but I just get a kick out of how dramatic they can sound.

6. I’m ready for peach season (and anything summery, come to think of it). I told Davida that I wanted her to make a healthy version of peach cobbler, and now I can’t stop thinking about it.

7. I’m going on a college visit this weekend for an admitted students’ day— let the discerning truly begin! I’ll be back with more details about the visit on Monday.

8. Oh, I did this yesterday.

Screen Shot 2014-02-12 at 11.03.27 PM

I was debating going home and napping or just working out and napping later (knowing there would be a snow day today), and when the intersection to turn either way approached, I chose the gym. But then I got there and wanted to sleep. I’m a terrible decision-maker. Did I just go home then? Eh, I was already there, so I just took a 20 minute snooze and that did the trick. I didn’t even care if people passed by my car and judged me.

9. Speaking of which, I’m sleepy. I’ll sign off here on the elusive #9. Hope you have a wonderful Thursday!

So tell me:

What is one form of exercise that you miss when you take a break from it for a while?

What summery things are you craving? Or wintery things if you’re in the southern hemisphere?

Behind the Scenes #8: Twitter Fever

Good morning!

It’s been a couple weeks since I’ve joined Amanda’s Thinking Out Loud linkup, so I’m more than glad to be joining it this week!

Thinking-Out-Loud

1. Today is our first full day of school this week. It’s weird. As fun as it is to stay at home all day, I kind of want to get back into a routine, especially since our winter break is in less than two weeks. If we keep having snow days, there will be no sense of differentiation and sheer joy once break comes around, ya know?

2. I never used to like Twitter because it stressed me out. All I saw were these random thoughts to absorb (….like this post….), and I just never cared for it that much. Up until 3.5 days ago, I really only used Twitter as a means to share my own blog posts or others’ blog posts. However, if you follow me on Twitter, you may have noticed that I’ve stepped up my game.

Screen Shot 2014-02-05 at 6.38.11 PM Screen Shot 2014-02-05 at 6.38.24 PM Screen Shot 2014-02-05 at 6.38.54 PM

I don’t know what got to me but the Twitter fever is gettin’ real. Or I’m gettin’ obnoxious. It’s guatever either way.

3. Staying on the topic of social media— Facebook users, do you love those new story videos like I do?? I mean, I just clicked on the link and then there was a cute little video that summed up some of my favorite pictures and statuses on Facebook. Honestly, I almost cried when I was watching my friend’s video. The music, the pictures, and the nostalgia was all too sweet to handle. I’m not sensitive or anything. Nice job, Mark Z.!

4. I’m wearing shorts right now (while also wearing a sweatshirt), which shows that I want it to be spring pretty badly apparently. Oh, and Dad just asked me to go outside to get the mail…I’m up for the challenge. (Just kidding, he went to go get it before me. Thanks for saving my legs from freezing, pa!)

5. If you’re a fan of witty and funny things, I highly recommend this blog called I Think in Comics. The author is actually my brother’s friend from Northeastern University, so college students would especially appreciate her humor. I literally laugh out loud every time I read her posts. She is such a talented cartoonist. She’s also Asian, and Asians rule.

Screen Shot 2014-02-05 at 7.38.49 PM

6. I had my first kale salad ever yesterday, and it was pretty good! I don’t mind the bitter flavor like some others might, so I ate it raw. I just massaged in some maple dijon dressing and added salmon and brussels sprouts. It’s definitely more of a jaw workout when eating kale rather than spinach (maybe I needed to massage it more), but I hope to experiment a little more with the most famous green in the HLB world.

Buttered parmesan potato bread on the side 😀

7. I am currently obsessed with this song by The Jakes (aka former Young the Giant). Thanks to my friend Daliza for introducing this ear candy to me. 😉

8. I wish scones could keep longer, but the truth is that they get crusty and dry if not eaten the day they’re made. Warming them up in a damp paper towel helps a wee bit, but they’re still not to their highest scone potential.

9. Would anyone happen to know a possible cause for a grinding shoulder joint? That sounds really nasty, but for the longest time, my left shoulder has not only been tight, but whenever I roll it or circle my arm, there is a grinding sensation (and sound). Like, there’s no lubrication for the joint. It doesn’t really hurt though, and my right shoulder is fine. All I know is that it hurts when I sleep on my left side (which my body just loves to do while I’m sleeping). I haven’t been lifting weights recently either, but the grinding did start before I stopped lifting.

According to Google, this problem may result in not being able to move my shoulder ever again. Cooooool. I feel like Jo in that every Google diagnosis I find makes me think my body is falling apart.

10. Andddd you probably don’t care about my shoulder issues. That’s okay, because I obviously didn’t care enough to bring it up until several months after the problem started….I hope you all have a wonderful day! Stay safe and warm (watch out for the black ice)!

So tell me:

Do you like using Twitter?

Are you a fan of kale?

Do you have any similar joint issues? Any idea why my shoulder is grinding?

Behind the Scenes #7: Cheerio Algebra

1. I had a huge brain fart last night. Dance company had a scheduled rehearsal from 8-8:30 last night of which we were notified at the beginning of the week. But here I am last night, going about my business at 8:00 PM, and then I get a call from the director of company:

Me: Hello?

Director: Hey Alison, I just wanted to call you because we have rehearsal right now and I was checking to make sure you were okay.

Me: (thinking for 2 seconds…@!#%@$#!!) *Gasp* Oh. my. gosh. I am so sorry. I completely forgot.

How’s that for the world’s crappiest excuse? But honesty is my best policy, as I’ve said before. The problem was that I didn’t right down the rehearsal time anywhere, so despite saying I could go, it just slipped my mind. Thankfully, the director was very cool and understanding about my foolishness, and she said I can catch up on the little tweaks made to our dance during rehearsal. Lesson: write appointments down ASAP.

2. Midterms start today, and apparently I need the whole kitchen table to study for AP Calculus. (Note: We always keep our most frequently-eaten snacks on the table. Those aren’t ALL my study snacks 😉 )

DSC_7487

3. I’m also the biggest nerd/breakfast enthusiast. Look at what I found in my notes:

DSC_7483

honey nut + banana nut = yum

nut (honey + banana) = yum

honey + banana = yum/nut or nut = yum/(honey+banana)

My friend, Kristi, who sits next to me in business calculus used to always bring Cheerios as a snack, so I guess I decided to make math out of food. I don’t even know what else to say.

4. I cleaned my laptop the other day, wiping is nicely with a wet wipe and then a dry paper towel. But that has rendered absolutely pointless since I’m always eating around my computer and thus always getting crumblies and dirty fingerprints all over it.

DSC_7480 DSC_7486

I should probably at least get one of those silicon keyboard covers, because when I took my laptop to school, I saw allllll the stuff on my keyboard under those fluorescent lights. Or I can just be less clumsy when I eat, but that’s not gonna happen.

5. There are 3 reasons I would like to go to Florida right now: a) It’s warmer. b) Hello, it’s Florida. c) GRILLED CHEESE at this place. It’s called Toasted and they have craft grilled cheeses and burgers, and I’ve actually never been there before. For some reason, my Yelp account is set to Orlando, FL (I guess since I set it up when we went down there last summer), so I always get emails about popular restaurants down there.

The grilled cheese I want right now: fig & goat cheese with Havarti, basil and honey. That’s right.

6. My parents went to visit my relatives in Canada this weekend to make up for our absence during Christmastime, and they came back with some fun Canadian loot!

7. I keep forgetting that the Olympics are coming up so soon! I’m so out of the loop, so I need to brush up on my winter athlete knowledge.

8. Currently obsessed with this song my Young the Giant’s alter ego (their former name), The Jakes.

9. I’m finishing typing this in school, and I just took the first part of my AP Calculus midterm….You know that grrrreat feeling when you find out you got a question (or two) wrong? That’s me right now.

10. I hope you all have a wonderful Thursday! Thank you to Amanda for hosting this awesome Thinking Out Loud linkup!

Thinking-Out-Loud

So tell me:

Have you forgotten something important recently?

Do you eat by your computer often?

Are you in the mood for grilled cheese?

Are you looking forward to the Olympics?

What is your favorite song right now?
