50 Shades of Fit

Hi!

I don’t know what was going on in my brain last night, but I was OUT OF IT.

1) I could not remember the ballet barre combinations for my life.

2) I forgot to turn on my car headlights at 8 PM. I didn’t realize until I got to my destination. (My town is very well-lit at night, don’t worry.)

3) I did some other questionable things concerning driving and my car….But I won’t get into those details.

I got home in one piece and I didn’t hurt anyone else, so praise God for that. I also ate this awesome salad (among other things) for dinner:

DSC_8029

I know it doesn’t look like much, but I finally made use of the tahini sitting in our fridge in a homemade dressing! I just combined about 1 tsp. tahini, 1 tsp. yuzu (Japanese lime soy sauce, essentially), a squeeze of honey, and a squirt of water to thin it out. That stuff was goooooood. It was a little too much for the amount of spinach I had here, so I just added more spinach. 🙂 I want to add it to a soba noodle salad or something like that next time!

Anyway, here are my recent moves:

Monday: 5 min stair master + lower body supersets [10 pistols each leg + 20 Bulgarian split squats//20 hamstring ball curls + 20 single leg bridge pulses each leg] + 8 min ab tabata [4 rounds of reverse crunches, spiderman plank, and spiderman kick through right and left]

Tuesday: ballet!

50 Shades of Fit

The amazing Julianna @ Julianna Banana tagged me in the 50 Shades of Fit Featured Blogger Series started by the also amazing Kaila @ The Healthy Helper! You can read Kaila’s awesome introduction post about the movement here, but this is an excerpt of what 50 Shades of Fit is all about:

There truly are (more than!) 50 shades of fit and as long as you’re incorporating fitness into your life in a healthy way for the right reasons, then you’re doing it right! Too often I see people ridiculing other for ‘not lifting’, eating certain food groups (or not eating certain food groups!), and or for not being as physically capable as other are. But this is not fair!

Fitness doesn’t have an end point. It isn’t a mountain that you can get to the top of. It’s a continuum that  we’ll all be on for the rest of our lives and no one place on it is better than any other. Instead of criticizing, judging, or ridiculing others based on where they are, we should be lifting each other up, encouraging each other, and congratulating each other for making choices to stay healthy, physically, mentally, and emotionally.

So take a moment to appreciate where you are on your own fitness journey and try to remain positive and tolerant of where other people are on theirs. There’s room for all of us in this world.

Her words hit the nail on the head, and I couldn’t be more excited to participate in the survey questions that come with being tagged! So let’s get started:

Currently, what does “fit” mean in your life?

  • Being able to move and groove every day (ahem, blog name), whether that means doing an actual workout or taking active study breaks every 20 minutes.
  • Embracing rest.
  • Feeling strong and energetic during my every day activities.

photo 2

When did you initially get more interested in incorporating health and fitness into your lifestyle?

When I was younger, I figure skated competitively, and I always loved to do pilates, yoga, and workout DVDs with my mom (I’ve memorized the lines of certain workout DVDs…). I was never into sports because my hand-eye coordination from 1-10 is about a 3, but I still loved to stay active.

I’ll be honest and say that my interest health and fitness rekindled a couple years ago for vanity reasons, and that unfortunately turned into disordered eating habits. However, in the past year or so, health and fitness have become less about a nice figure and more about feeling happier, moving with greater ease, and treating my body with respect. Now I believe that I have truly become interested in health and fitness.

TRX

What are some of your favorite ways to get moving?

As Julianna said, there are SO many ways to get moving— it’s difficult to choose just a few! Some of my favorites include dance, circuit workouts (especially with burpees), yoga, Pilates, walking, and hiking.

yoga

Some activities that I still want to try include long distance runs (yes, running), a mud run/obstacle course, CrossFit, BodyPump, and and hot yoga! We’re talking long term goals here.

In what ways do you inspire and encourage others to add some sort of fitness into their lives? + What advice would you give someone who is just starting their fitness journey and exploring what works for them?

I can only hope that through this blog (and my off-blog geeky-ness about the benefits of staying active) I am able to inspire others to just move more. Anything is better than nothing, and starting small is the way to go. My daily workout used to be 15 minutes on the elliptical, and that was fine. As I started to push myself more and get out of my comfort zone, I realized that I enjoyed so many different things. A couple years ago, I never thought I could run a sub-8 mile, do 100 burpees in a row, lift heavy things, or even do a proper pushup, but with time (and sweat), those things happened. Believe me, if I could do it, YOU can do it.

Most importantly though, have FUN when you workout! Please?

WIAW: Friday During Lent

Ciao!

As you are reading this, I am either sleeping in or meandering around Little Italy, hopefully eating some gelato or pasta. My Italian class has a field trip there today, and we don’t have to go into school since we’re just meeting at the train station at 9 AM. Booyahhhh!

Well Lent is coming to a close in a little over a week, but before the Hallelujah’s emerge and the lambs start leaping, there are still a couple of Fridays that involve abstinence from meat. I’ve mentioned this before, but going meatless is not much of a sacrifice for me since I love fish and eggs and Greek yogurt so much (maybe too much). Thus, I’ve made it a personal thing to also give up nut butter on Fridays, because THAT is a sacrifice for me. As you may know. So for this WIAW, I’m showing you all what I ate last Friday!

WIAWbutton

Jenn‘s blog is where the party’s at!

Breakfast

DSC_7824

Fantastic green smoothie with milk, ½ frozen banana, ~1 c. frozen tropical fruit, ¼ c. oats, a big handful of spinach, chia seeds, half a scoop of vanilla protein powder, and coconut oil! Greek yogurt for spoon dipping.

I got the idea of adding coconut oil to my smoothie from Robyn, and I thought it would be a great way to add some healthy fats in place of my usual nut butter. MAN was it delicious. The hint of coconut aroma and added creaminess…Just do it.

Snack

IMG_3928 IMG_3929

‘Chios (pistachios).

Kristi and I decided to write messages and draw dinosaurs on the shells because business calc is all about food, right?

Lunch

IMG_3931

Hodgepodge: white cheddar popcorn, soft boiled egg, veggies and hummus

IMG_3932

Cashews a couple hours later

I’m actually a fan of this snacky lunch! A little bit o’ this, a little bit o’ that. Badda bing, badda boom. Fuggedaboudit.

I’m in Little Italy— just let me say that this one time.

Snack

Apparently, I’m not civilized enough to put things into bowls or cups…

DSC_7827

Greek yogurt with pineapple, banana, and cereal

 DSC_7826

Pineapple juice. Keepin’ it classy with a straw straight into the container. 😀

Dinner

DSC_7829

Avocado toast with a soft boiled egg, s+p, and sriracha. I had to eat this on the go to pick up my friends for Legally Blonde!

Dessert

dried figs and greek yogurt

You definitely guessed it. 3 dried figs with Greek yogurt. {recycled photo}

And even though I didn’t eat these on Friday, can we just admire the dark, sweet juiciness of these strawberries my mom bought from Sam’s Club a couple days ago?

DSC_7835

Like a jewel.

Happy Wednesday, everyone!

So tell me:

What do you eat on meatless days?

Which food do you usually eat every day without fail?

Have you ever added coconut oil to your smoothies?

What is the best in-season fruit you’ve eaten so far?

WIAW: Benefit Week Eats

Good morning!

I hope you all had a good-spirited April Fools’ Day! Nothing much happened around here. The only thing some people (including myself) did in school was turn on our cell phone alarms for 2:23 PM, and then we left them in our lockers to make a commotion right before school ended. Apparently it caused a little bit of concern, since I guess it is alarming (literally) when all the lockers seem to come to life. It wasn’t anything groundbreaking though. After all, we’ve gotta save some juice for senior prank 😉

With the lack of posts all last week, I have not shown my recent eats! What a shame since I obviously love posting food pictures (*cough* Instagram). So naturally, I’m joining this week’s WIAW party to share what fueled me through my moves and grooves during Benefit Week!

WIAWbutton

As always, hosted by my hero, Jenn. 😉

In absolutely no particular order, here are some of the things I’ve been eating:

Breakfasts

Overnight oats in a mug

DSC_7799

Overnight oats in a peanut butter jar. GAHHH. (Perfect for transporting to early morning AP Calc review.)

DSC_7812

Overnight oats in an almond butter jar. Also taken to early AP Calc review. I’m sure people were judging, but guatever.

Gina’s cookie dough cereal with bananas and strawberries

DSC_7798

Banana bread English muffin with nut butter, banana slices + glass o’ milk (haven’t had one of those in a while!)

Amanda’s oatmeal cookie dough smoothie (with spinach for green powahhh) + Greek yogurt for spoon dipping

DSC_7803

Friday’s nut butter-less breakfast: Greek yogurt, strawberries, banana, chia, hemp, cinnamon, nutmeg, honey

Lunches

DSC_7800

Whole wheat wrap with avocado, spinach, soft boiled egg, feta, and salsa added later. SO GOOD. I had another variation of this for dinner one night with two eggs and spicy brown mustard instead of salsa. I highly recommend this combo!

Dinner with the family (Ben was home for a day!) on Sunday! Ben got Sambal chicken and seafood. The other three of us shared a huge Sushi for Two platter. We also had some spring rolls as appetizer. Mmmmm.

How’s THAT for a recent eats recap?! It’s a good thing I just ate dinner, because otherwise, I would be hangry right about now. 😉

I hope you all have a great day!

So tell me:

What is the best vegetable you’ve eaten recently?

What do you like to put in wraps?

I Miss These Kinds of Posts + My New Favorite Salad Dressing

I haven’t posted twice in one day since before school started I think! I’ve actually really missed the multiple posts in a day because I just get to rant and chat with you all about life’s little things. Also, I haven’t been talking about my daily moves (workouts) and grooves (whatever else is going in my life, like food) as much. So I’m taking advantage of my extra time this Christmas break to talk to you guys more! And if you’d like, you can listen and talk to me too 🙂

Breakfast

I’ve been going to bed no earlier than around 1 AM in the past few days. The best part? It’s not because of insomnia! It’s mostly because I’ve been sleeping in and there’s no stress to get up early. Three cheers for Christmas break!!!

Late risings mean late breakfasts. I had my breakfast at around 11:30 AM…heh.

DSC_7268 DSC_7269

After not eating a full meal for over 12 hours, I was pretty darn hungry! I fixed myself some sunflower seed toast with coconut oil, a drizzle of honey, and cinnamon (<— DO THIS), Greek yogurt with a small banana, and then a bowl of cereal because I was still hungry. Such a delicious way to start my morning  afternoon!

New Car

After reading blogs and doing nothing entirely productive besides washing dishes, I found that my parents came home with a new van! Our old 2003 Honda Odyssey’s tires got smoked in the accident last week, and it was pretty dated anyway. The new Odyssey is spacious and shinyyyyy. But our garage smells like new car, which for some reason kinda makes me want to gag.

Moves

Pre-workout fuel:

DSC_7270

Homemade granola bar

I headed to the gym where I did 20 minutes on the elliptical and a 15 minute incline walk on the treadmill. I was thinking of going for 25 minutes on the incline walk, but I got a HUGE cramp at 15 minutes that I just couldn’t shake off, so I just stopped. Then I did some bodyweight leg circuits that included TRX pistol squats, weighted wall sits, and hamstring ball curls. ‘Twas a slow but sure burn.

Lunch

…If you call a meal at 5 PM lunch. Is it “linner?” Either way, it was delicious because it involved my new favorite salad dressing that is super simple and quick to prepare!

DSC_7271

I had a salad with some soft boiled eggs and a side of leftover roasted potatoes and carrots. The salad was dressed with a fabulous homemade honey mustard dressing. I don’t even bother to mix the dressing separately or measure anything— I just add all the ingredients right into the salad and toss! I put in (approximately):

  • 1-2 tsp. olive oil
  • 1 tsp. spicy brown mustard
  • drizzle of honey
  • pinch of salt and pepper

Very precise, I know. Basically, just adjust the honey and mustard to taste, and you’re good to go!

Also, did you know that soft boiled eggs can keep quite well in the fridge? My mom cooked some up a couple days ago, and the yolks stay viscous and creamy!

DSC_7272

So…I guess I’ll be having dinner at, like, 9 PM? Eh, that’s not too crazy.

I hope you have a lovely evening!

So tell me:

Do you like it when bloggers post more daily life posts? I know I enjoy them!

What is your favorite homemade salad dressing?

Do you ever keep soft boiled eggs in the fridge, or just hard boiled?

On Cloud Coconut {MIMM #3}

Good morning!

How in the world is it September? I kinda shiver when I think of September because I immediately associate it with school. BUT I should probably look at the bright side since it’s the month of so many birthdays in my family!

This weekend has been a lovely mix of productivity and leisure, which is such a blessing. It’s been fun hanging out with my family and friends before we get down to business for the start of the school year (next Monday–gah!). I also did quite a bit of cooking and baking this weekend! I can still smell the flour, bananas, and cinnamon. ‘Twas marvelous!

MiMM

Thanks again, Katie, for hosting!

Marvelous is…

THIS:

DSC_5935

Saturday afternoon, I baked and indulged in the most delicious banana coconut muffins from Cookie & Kate. I am still amazed at how good they are. Wow. Literally–moist clouds of not-overly-sweet banana coconut goodness with a kick of lemon/lime zest and a crispy topping of toasted coconut. (I feel like I could make the descriptions for menus at fancy restaurants…Oh there’s an idea!)

Swoon.

DSC_5929

My mom and dad really enjoyed these too. I will definitely be making these again!

Marvelous is…

Nine hours of sleep on Friday and Saturday night! Haven’t gotten that much in a while. Very grateful indeed.

Marvelous is…

Toast + avocado + smoked salmon=winning comb.

DSC_5922

Three li’l piggies fishies.

Marvelous is…

Finishing all my summer homework, woohoo! Now it’s time for college essays. Oh boy.

Marvelous is…

More baking! My mom requested some kind of treat that incorporated her chocolate protein powder for when she goes to the gym. Thus, I made Taralynn’s Protein Brownies. They have a strong banana flavor, but we’re cool with that!

DSC_5939

Marvelous is…

Soft boiled eggs + toast (a.k.a. “Eggs and Soldiers.” All I need is Ben so I can speak in a British accent!)

DSC_5936

Marvelous is…

Ciao Bella deliciousness. I shared a little bit of coconut sorbet and pistachio gelato with mom. Oh how I love frozen treats.

DSC_5924 DSC_5925

Marvelous is…

This new-to-me Chobani flavor–lemon! Chobani was on sale at Stop and Shop, so I got five flavors that I’ve never tried before. To be honest, lemon Greek yogurt sorta turned me off because I was afraid of eating sour with sour, but this was awesome! It was kind of like lemonade.

DSC_5937

Marvelous is…

Oats 🙂

DSC_5926

Note: I found the perfect spot to take pictures of my food when it’s light outside! My mom has this little table on our front steps that she painted white, so it helps create a rustic, yet clean background for my photos. I’m definitely FAR from a pro, but it’s better than taking pictures of my food on the kitchen floor next to the back door. Although now the neighbors will regularly see me in my pajamas taking pictures of bowls and plates of food. There are weirder things I could do.

Marvelous is…

Mom and Dad having a date-night-in watching What to Expect When You’re Expecting. They were laughing a lot! I admire my parents for still devoting quality time to each other (even though I totally squeezed in on the couch to watch too). I hope to have a relationship like that one day if God calls me to be wife!

DSC_5941

Adorable.

Marvelous is…

Making buckwheat pancakes for the first time!

DSC_5943

I used this recipe from Edible Perspective, making some slight changes based on what was available in our pantry and fridge. They were fantastic! The buckwheat flour made them dense and fulfilling, and the hint of cinnamon was perfect.

DSC_5946

I highlighted the cinnamon with some vanilla sunflower seed butter (which has some cinnamon in it), Greek yogurt, and a drizzle of maple syrup.

I got kind of excited with my camera around my neck, phone held by my chin, and plate in hand. So this happened:

DSC_5947

Fail. I said it.

The ‘rents enjoyed the waffles as well!

Marvelous is…

A random workout yesterday!

It began with 10 minutes on the elliptical and 5 minutes on the treadmill again! But there’s some sad news. I tried a different treadmill to see if the other one was defective and I was going at speed 7.0 again. Boo. However, I will continue trials at this empirical experiment (nerd alert) because today my legs were more sore than they were on Friday, so maybe that affected my speed as well. We shall see.

Then I loosely followed this arm workout from Julie and did some ab work that burned.

That’s all for now, folks!

PS: I updated my About page yesterday! It gets a little raw and you can read about my more personal story. *Suspense*

I also added a Blogroll page so you can see some of the super spectacular blogs I follow!

Have a great week! (Good luck to those starting school this week.)

So tell me: Have you baked anything recently? Do you like waffles? What did you do this weekend? What are you doing today?
