Behind the Scenes #25: Burgers, Fries, and Ice Cream

Thinking-Out-Loud

with one of the coolest Canadians, Amanda

1) I feel like I don’t have much to do these days, yet I still end up filling my days with things. Chores, yoga/walking, seeing friends, making appointments, getting college stuff ready, blogging, reading, watching the World Cup. None of it is really urgent and I never feel busy, but I end the day thinking, “What did I even do today and how is it already 1 AM?!”

2) If all THAT isn’t thrilling enough, Daliza, my family, and I are kicking it up a notch (or a hundred notches) starting Sunday. We’re going to Florida! My parents have a lovely vacation home down there, so we’ll be chillin’ there for a whopping THREE WEEKS. Daliza’s excited for Disney. I’m excited for Publix— the supermarket of the South. Typical.

Last year in Florida when I made fish tacos and started the blog. Nostalgia.

3) I’m getting closer to holding my handstand! Right now, I get really excited when I hold it for a solid four seconds. I’m basically Shawn Johnson.

4) There’s nothing quite like a classic burger. Pickles, ketchup, mustard, cheese. Mmm. Lilly, Pam, and I went to Bareburger yesterday, and I had just that. We also shared sweet potato fries, because…sweet potato fries. Self-explanatory.

photo 2

The only thing that made this a little non-classic was the fact that it was a turkey burger instead of a beef burger.

photo 1 copy

Sweet potato fries with their three sauces— curry ketchup, ranch, and “special sauce.” It was wonderful.

5) The fact that my friends and I are all going to college next month has not hit me AT ALL yet. Lilly is moving back to California tomorrow for college, and it’s just not emotionally occurring to me that she’s going so far away for such a long time. I’m just gonna start bawling out of nowhere in a few weeks when I’m listening to a sad song or something.

photo 3

♥ I’ll miss you so much, Lilly!!!

6) The “core four” got together last night at the local creamery for some catch-up conversation and ice cream!  I love hanging out with those girls.

photo 4 copy

Apple pie ice cream = heavenly.

7) I bought coconut flour yesterday just to make Amanda’s banana bread mug cake. I’m dreaming about it already.

8) I haven’t been carrying out my teenage duties of sleeping a lot over the summer. I don’t know why, but my internal clock wakes me up after about 7-8 hours of sleep every morning. That’s a perfect amount of sleep for me, but I can’t help but feel like I should be sleeping in even longer while I have that luxury.

9) As I’ve been doing more yoga recently, I’ve learned that I am so NOT flexible anymore. Well, I am and I’m not. I can still do the splits on each leg, but my shoulders are getting so tight that it’s getting difficult to clasp my hands behind my back. No bueno. If I’m gonna be a physical therapist, I better drink some of my own medicine and stretch more!

10) I hope you all have a fabulous day! I’ll leave you off with words from the coolest book around 😉

So tell me:

Do you like burgers?

How long does your internal clock let you sleep?

So Many Emotions

Hello there!

Sorry for disappearing on Friday— I had my fascinating links and everything, and I was trying to type up a post in school, but there just wasn’t enough time. Thursday night was also a whirlwind, which you’ll see in a moment.

I’ve cried {good tears} THREE times in the past four days, so I’ve just been on an emotional roller coaster this weekend. Maybe I’m just hormonal??

MiMM

Linking up with Katie’s MIMM, because being emotional is marvelous 😉

Thursday

Feeling sad yet thankful at our last school concert. I’ve been involved in the music program at my school for 6 years now, so I’ve developed a great relationship with not only my peers in the music program, but my teachers as well. They’re some of the coolest people I know.

Annual concert selfie with Daliza

My friend Daliza was bawling on stage (love you, lady), and the rest of us teared up a little bit too for our last song, “I Will” by the Beatles. Nope, this doesn’t usually happen to seniors at their last concert. We’re just a special breed.

Daliza, Apaula, and I with our super awesome vocal teacher {what da freak is up with my arm?!}

We ate our feelings at the diner with our music teachers and all the seniors that performed.

Shared banana pancakes with Daliza

“Banana pancakes” just like Jack Johnson!

Friday

Feeling stunned that my friend Michael bought me not one, but TWO jars of no-salt, organic peanut butter. As if his prom-posal wasn’t awesome enough!! He says it’s a gift for all the times I’ve given him a ride and the one time I made him a strawberry banana smoothie, but uh…other than that, I didn’t do anything for these!

DSC_8088

Kid knows what he’s doing. Thanks so much, Michael! I’m set for a month now. Maybe. 😉

Feeling just pain emotional while listening to this heart-tugging original song:

Like, sobbing in my bedroom by myself.

Feeling disappointed that the avocado for which I had been patiently waiting to ripen turned out to be a dud. I cut it as usual, and when I twisted it open, the skin just came off by itself…

DSC_8090

I tried to salvage the avocado by cutting around the pit, but it was actually still really hard despite being on the counter to ripen for several days. When I tasted it, I could tell that there was something funky about it, so I chucked it. *sigh*

Saturday

Feeling blessed to see some of my third grade religion students receive their First Communion on such a glorious day!

Little angels

Feeling like a bro driving with my window down and sun roof open. Heh.

Feeling energized after a nap and some awesome moves outside. I’m gettin’ a little better at those double unders! The most I strung together was 20. I also got some unassisted pistol squats in there! (I guess eating more helps you become stronger or something ;))

Feeling blissful eating peanut butter banana soft serve again (aka the most ingenious dessert known to mankind).

DSC_8095

Feeling inspired while watching the Crossfit Games Regionals online. They are all INSANE athletes. (<— Feeling guilty because I totally used this as procrastination from my economics paper…whoops.)

Sunday

Feeling touched by the support and love for our pastor at church who is retiring this year. I teared up when one of the other priests sang a song for our departing pastor at the end of our big thanksgiving Mass for him.

Feeling proud that I am Asian…Because I have a mother that can make things like coconut sticky rice with sweet, ripe mangoes.

Mom: “It’s like a five-star restaurant!”

Indeed, ma!

Feeling confused because our power went out for about 15 minutes, even though the weather was perfect yesterday.

Feeling in awe of my superhero dad. He was serving others non-stop yesterday—giving out report cards at Sunday School, serving Mass, talking to people in the church, going to a pro-life rally, doing political campaigning, and mowing the lawn. Not a peep of a complaint came out of him.

Feeling triumphant finishing my economics paper and presentation!!! I deserve a superman cape too.

And that, my friends, is the palette of my colorful emotions this weekend. Hope you all have a great Monday!

So tell me:

________ made you happy/sad/excited/disappointed/confused this weekend.

What is your favorite ethnic dessert?

Have you ever had an avocado that did what mine did?!

Weekend Confessions {MIMM #19}

I feel like I haven’t blogged in forever, but it’s only been 3 days! Maybe it’s because this weekend has been packed with activities, or maybe it’s because this is one of the most social things I’ve done this weekend. #loser.

I’m only [half] kidding. 😉

This weekend involved a lot of things that I think would be fun to include in a “Confessions” post. I absolutely love it when bloggers do these kinds of posts because it gets personal (but not too personal— this isn’t the Sacrament of Penance here), and they’re often pretty darn funny. I don’t know if my confessions will be funny, but you can humor me. ….Please?

MiMM

I’m linking up with Katie‘s Marvelous in My Monday party!

Confession #1:

I procrastinated like a boss on Friday and Saturday. (How’s that for an ironic sentence?) I totally could have knocked out a lot of homework on Friday evening, but I decided to take my sweet time reading blogs and looking at prom dresses. All of a sudden it was 11:00 pm and I wanted to sleep. Then on Saturday night, I was glued to my bed with the biggest food baby I’ve had in a while (details below), so I just watched a bunch of Jimmy Kimmel and Ellen Degeneres on Youtube. At 10:30 pm, I finally got myself together and prepared my lesson for Sunday school.

The shame.

I ended up getting homework done on Saturday morning before dance and Sunday evening after dance.

Renewed policy: Do work first. THEN relax. (<— Easier said than done.)

Confession #2:

My abs were soreeee on Saturday! I did a longer-than-necessary tabata ab workout on Friday that consisted of 40 rounds. Why 40 rounds? That’s how my Gymboss App Timer was already set, so I just went with it. And the price was paid.

I went through these moves until the time was up: leg raises, reverse crunches, spiderman plank, side plank hip raises right and left, ankle touches, Russian twists, and ball roll-ins. I’ve actually been enjoying doing ab exercises in a tabata fashion because it keeps me from getting bored, and it keeps up the burn!

Confession #3:

I finished a whole plate of pasta at a restaurant, and I flippin’ LOVED it. My mom had yet another Groupon (surprise, surprise 😉 ) for an Italian restaurant, so we put it to use for dinner after church on Saturday night.

We started with some delicious bread and salads:

Then came some appetizers dal mare (We thought the Groupon came with two appetizers, but in fact it only came with one…whoops):

photo 3 copy 2 photo 2 copy

Then came the entrees. My parents thoroughly enjoyed theirs, but I think I went to Heaven and back when eating my dish. I ordered the “Gnocchi Ala Sasa,” which was homemade gnocchi in a tomato and basil sauce, baked with mozzarella on top.

photo 2

Pillows of tomato-y, cheesy goodness.

I think this was the best gnocchi I’ve ever eaten. My mom and dad shared a few bites with me, but I still housed that baby. A year ago, I would never have even thought of ordering a pasta dish as an entree because it would be “way too many carbs.” Thank God things have changed significantly, because this gnocchi was on the verge of life-changing.

Dessert was also a huge hit:

photo 3 copy

Peach cobbler a la mode. More like yellow cake with a couple peaches in it, but I seemed to have enjoyed it, considering I ate most of by myself.

photo 4 copy

I also had a bite of the real winner— Nutella Banana Calzone. That crispy cinnamon crust with the warm, oozy Nutella and sweet bananas? All in one bite with some cool vanilla ice cream? I can’t.

Cue the food baby!

Confession #4:

Even though I’ve been packing on the cocoa butter moisturizer, I still have those pesky hangnails. I wish I could wear spa gloves in public.

On a similar note, my feet, along with the feet of all my fellow company members, are burning. It has been a while since we’ve danced on our bare feet for four hours, so the calluses are nonexistent right now and we have to rebuild them. We’re all waddling and currently obsessed with socks.

Proof: I just laughed out loud at all the Snapchats I just received from some of my dance mates. I sent one out saying, “Waddling through the house. Feeeet,” and these were some of the responses:

  • “Same. I have four pairs of socks on right now.”
  • “Body. is. dead.”
  • “Everything hurts.”
  • “I’m so sore it’s embarrassing.”
  • “I feel so bad for my feet.”
  • “Can’t function.”

Sums it up pretty well.

Confession #5:

I’ve been drinking a ton of water recently, which I’m quite happy about since I’m usually terrible at getting enough H2O. But I’ve also been needing to go to the bathroom all. the. time.

Confession #6:

When I came home, I accidentally opened the other garage door instead of closing the one through which I entered…so both of them were open for a good 5 hours. Our neighborly neighbor called at 10 pm to let us know. Nice move, Alison.

Confession #7:

I still haven’t made a huge dent in reading Catching Fire. Why can’t I just read the darn book?! I’ll go do that now.

Confession #9:

I’m still probably not going to read it tonight.

Alrighty, I think that’s all the confessing I have for you today! Maybe you guys can relate to some of these and make me feel better. 🙂

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Happy Monday!

So tell me:

Do you have any confessions?

What is the best pasta dish you’ve ever had?

Any other chronic procrastinators out there? (How do you keep yourself in check?)
