Snapchat, Podcasts, and Current Snack Addiction

Thinking-Out-Loud

1) I used to think Snapchat was the worst social media platform ever. Sending anyone photos that will be forever deleted (or so they say) after a few seconds seemed funny, but also very….dangerous? My fear was opening a snap and being like:

AHH - Oh my

[source]

2) But now Snapchat has this whole “My Story” phenomenon, and I don’t hate it. You don’t have to scroll through a feed to see what people are up to, and I find some people’s stories to be quite entertaining. Mine aren’t that cool, but if you want to follow me and see me livin’ life (in case you don’t see enough of that here), my username is alisonmty. Option two would be to scan this:

IMG_7056

3) Continuing on the theme of social media, what is the deal with accounts like this?

IMG_7057

Zero posts, not following anyone, over 19,000 followers. I don’t know, I just don’t.

4) Yes, I am continually doctoring my social media obsession. I did a pretty good job a few weeks ago by limiting my time on social media to about half an hour total every day. Then I fell off that bandwagon, but I should hop back on.

5) Okay one more thing regarding technology, but this seems more productive than social media. I’ve started listening to podcasts! What I mean by that is I’ve started listening to two podcasts— Girls Gone WOD (found out about them through Tina’s blog) and The Catholic Guy’s Show. They’re both funny, informative, and thought-provoking. Listening to podcasts is like being a passive listener to a really good conversation that fascinates you.

I would appreciate any podcast recommendations! (I do know about Serial.)

6) Popcorners are the most addicting snack in all the land. It’s like opening the door to Narnia when you open the bag.

*Dad opens bag*

Me: Be careful, those are addicting.

*Dad chuckles*

*I go over to eat one…then two*

Me: They’re just so good!

*I go for another one*

Me: See, as soon as you open the bag…!

Dad: Yeah. Close it. Close it.

7) Sandwiches on English muffins have been rockin’ my world. Not because sandwiches between two pieces of regular bread aren’t fantastic, but when English muffins are BOGO, you hop on it and put yummy things inside.

8) After a hot and humid weekend, the weather eased up beautifully yesterday! My morning walk was crisp and pleasant.

9) “25 Things Girls Put On Instagram That Annoy All Women”. Okay, going back to Instagram for a quick sec because I just found this. Although I definitely don’t agree with some of the things on this list, I do find the post hilarious. “Bathroom selfies: Oh well your house is just lovely, laundry on the floor and all.”

10) I promise there’s more in my brain than social media and petty first world problems. Those things just keep it lighthearted around here. 🙂 Hope you all have a splendid day!

So tell me:

Do you use Snapchat?

Your current snack addiction?

Do you listen to podcasts? Have any favorites?

What annoys you on Instagram? Chances are, if someone’s posts are annoying me, I’m not following the person. That being said, I’m not a fan of random selfies with an emoji as a caption. I’m fine with selfies in general (meaningful caption, with friends, at a cool place, etc.), but the emoji caption is just…alrighty then. There you are.

WIAW: Then and Now

You wanna know what’s pretty darn cool?

These photos of Pluto.

Wanna know what else is pretty darn cool?

Looking through my blog and seeing progress in my health, faith, and maturity. I’ve only been blogging for {almost} two years, but what an eventful two years they have been!

I’ll save the teary-eyed talk for my actual blogiversary (which I have not even memorized), but today for What I Ate Wednesday, I want to do a little “then and now” comparison of my eats. The “then” photos are from early 2014, and the “now” photos are from yesterday. So this is comparing my eats between a 1.5-year period.

WHAT-I-ATE-WEDNESDAY-NEW-BUTTON-PEAS-AND-CRAYONS

What I am taking away from this comparison of eats is that:

a) The eats don’t look all that different between then and now.

b) The volume of eats is more or less the same between then and now.

c) The caloric density of my eats is much greater now. (My eats last year were very “clean” with minimal sugar and oils.)

d) I’m doing much less activity now.

e) I’m pretty sure that I feel more energized now.

Like I said, the eats may not look that different, but when I keep in mind the caloric density of my foods today and the absence of formal, intense workouts lately, I have to say that I’m proud of my progress.

And guess what. I feel so much better now. I don’t agree with those who say “clean eating” makes you feel better than ever. Yes, eating nutritious foods most of the time makes me feel great, but getting rid of sugars and oils from everything makes me feel crabby, not better than ever.

My goal in this comparison is not to judge my past self or ridicule myself for being a little restrictive, because that time period was just another part of my journey. I’ve learned that recovery seems to keep unfolding itself, even if you think you’re just about done, which is why I say I’m 99.9% recovered.

So tell me:

Do you notice any differences between your eats now and your eats a year (or two) ago?

What did you eat for lunch yesterday? That goat cheese, honey, egg sandwich hit the spot.

Do you like meatloaf? I LOVE MEATLOAF, and the one I made last night was fantastic.

*My friends at Enlightened sent me more of their crisps because I’m in love with them and I blogged all about it. Honesty = best policy.

Why Did I Eat It?

HEY I’m blogging in the middle of a school week! That doesn’t happen very often these days, huh?

I’m even joining in on the What I Ate Wednesday fun for the first time in a few weeks!

WHAT-I-ATE-WEDNESDAY-NEW-BUTTON-PEAS-AND-CRAYONS

Today I’m showing you what I ate on Monday, a regular ol’ day in college. But I also wanted to share the reasons why I ate what I ate.

{My roommate just read that to herself and mocked me: “And this is why I added a pinch of salt. And this is why I had three scoops of oatmeal instead of two! And this is why I had 27 scoops of peanut butter instead of 24.” So this is how I am perceived in the world.}

I said it in my NEDA week post, but I’ll say it again: it can be difficult to not analyze food to some extent, even after recovering from an eating disorder. However, my mindset towards food has shifted from focusing on restriction and calories to focusing on nutrients, fuel, and happiness.

Sometimes I choose to eat certain foods to make sure I am getting enough macros, nutrients, etc. Other times, I choose to eat foods because I’m in a rush. Still other times, I choose to eat foods because they just taste good.

So here are Monday’s eats and the answers to the question: Why did I eat it?

Breakfast

-Two egg scramble with all the veggies in the land // For protein, fiber, and nutrients + staying power for three straight hours of classes.

-Whole wheat apple pancake with peanut butter and banana on top // For whole grains, fruit, delicious taste, healthy fats and just…peanut butter.

-Glass o’ milk // To wash down the pancake with peanut butter and for calcium.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Lunch

Grilled chicken // For protein, and it was spiced well.

-Salad with spinach, tomatoes, carrots, sautéed veggies, whole wheat pasta salad, and honey dijon dressing // For yet more veggie power, carbs, something to eat with the chicken, and taste (man this was delicious!).

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

-Apple // To keep the doctor away 😉 And because I like to end on a sweet note.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Snacks

-Wheat Thins // Because they’re a convenient snack that I have in my dorm and I love them.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

-Bare apple chips + a couple spoonfuls of almond butter // For energy to study, fiber, healthy fats, and protein. This is also one of my favorite snacks at the moment, but now I’m out of apple chips. 😦

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

-Another spoonful of almond butter // I was still hungry and I knew I would not be eating dinner in another three hours.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

[I played intramural softball with some people from the Catholic Center, which was freezing, fun, and humorous all at the same time. I strongly despise softball/baseball, so this was truly one for the team. But it was low-key, so I’d do it again!]

Processed with VSCOcam with m5 preset

My thoughts: “But I can barely catch with my good hand.”

Dinner

-Meatloaf, mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, and gravy // Because I will eat any sort of meatloaf (okay, maybe not). Also for protein, carbs, veggies, and comfort (a good meal for thawing out from the cold outdoors).

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Dessert(s)

-Apple and raisin compote + peach cobbler ice cream // I wanted dessert.

There’s a little more explanation for this one. I grabbed the apple raisin compote in hopes to have it a la mode with vanilla ice cream, but there was no vanilla ice cream when I went to go get some. Thus, I tried this peach cobbler ice cream, but it was kinda gross to me, so I didn’t really eat it. I finished most of the apple raisin thing though.

Processed with VSCOcam with g3 preset

-Strawberry shortcake with vanilla ice cream // Because our faculty in residence baked it from scratch, so how could I say no? I also justified that I didn’t have much of my dessert at the dining hall, so…

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

It was worth the Monday night sugar overload.

Looking back at my day of eats, it looks like I ate quite a lot. But as I was going about my day on Monday, this was the amount my body needed (and wanted when it came to the desserts). Even though I seek to get enough vegetables, whole grains, nutrients, etc., I am fortunate to say that I also truly enjoy the healthy foods I eat. Then I might have some (or a lot of) sugar because it’s also tasty and nourishing to my soul.

Mindful eating used to be my whole life, but with time, mindful eating has become a useful tool— an optional tool at times.

I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday!

So tell me:

Do you consider yourself a “mindful eater”?

What is a sweet treat that you’ve eaten recently?

Do you like softball or baseball?

Blizzard Day Eats

It feels like I’m in high school again!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Blizzard 2015 resulted in cancelled classes yesterday and today, so the students of Boston are reveling in the extra time to study watch Netflix and play outside. The wind and snow were going strong all day yesterday, and I’d say Boston got approximately two feet of snow.

Processed with VSCOcam with t1 preset

Some pictures of buried cars and parking meters are slightly misleading, because snowblowers caused the sidewalks to look insanely drowned in snow, but there still was a heck of a lot of fluffy white stuff!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Our faces hurt from the cutting, cold wind, but it was fun to be outside after studying all day. The snow was the fluffiest and whitest I’ve ever seen!

Moves were also done inside! I did five rounds (spread out throughout the morning) of 20 air squats, 20 pushups, 1 minute plank, and 10 burpees, plus other random exercises as study breaks.

In my dorm building, we are fortunate enough to have a dining hall on the lower floor, so food was still conveniently accessible throughout the day. The same could not be said for people living in some of the other dorms, so we are lucky ducks!

Favorite Recent Eats

There has been a lot of sugar on the blog recently.

I mean, Monday’s post consisted of cheesecake, cookie dough, and ice cream. Although I have indeed been eating more sugar than I would at home, I’m cool with it because there is still balance. I haven’t shared much of the food I’ve been eating besides my desserts, so that’s exactly what I want to do today!

Since I have accumulated way too many food photos on my phone, I’m just going to share my favorite meals I’ve recently eaten. There have fortunately been many great meals, so I had to be pretty selective!

The thing that surprises me most about my eats lately is the addition of savory foods to my breakfasts. I used to never eat savory foods for breakfast unless it was absolutely necessary. Sweet breakfasts still have my heart, but I’ve been diggin’ the eggs with spicy sriracha! Gets the blood pumping a little more in the morning. 😉

Also, whenever there is meatloaf in the dining hall, I have to get it. I’m that person that loves loaf o’ meat. The best part is that the meatloaf at our dining halls is usually “Sargent Choice”, which is the healthy seal of approval here at Boston University. I use that to justify my choice to always get it when it’s available.

Not all the food here is squeaky “clean”, but I prefer it that way. I can almost feel my brain (and soul) thanking me for feeding it satisfying, substantial foods. I’m not quite sure how I used to survive on wimpy salads in the past. I do believe times have changed for the better!

I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday! Eat good for ya food and good to ya food 🙂
