Motivating Myself to Work Out at Home

Boston, here I come!

Today is the day I go back up to Boston to settle in for second semester. I’m pumped and nervous at the same time. I’m definitely not as nervous as I was going into first semester (for obvious reasons), but I still get anxious about new schedules and professors, but the unknown is what makes life thrilling, right?

My last day at home was productive again! It started with a delicious and filling breakfast of course. I ended up making Amanda’s oatmeal cookie dough smoothie (plus spinach blended in) — not a new one, but certainly a great one.

What do you think of THAT green color greeting you in the morning!?

After picking up my laptop (fitted with a brand new hard drive, hooray!) from the Apple Store, mom and I spent some last girl time together at the nail salon. I’m going to miss my parents.

Then it was time to come home and do some moves, which was butt-kicking at its finest.

full body supersets workout

Some of the exercises that may be unfamiliar: bench sitswalking pushups, (Bulgarian) split squatsin and out abscrab toe toucheslow jacksmodified V-ups

I used my ratchet, makeshift 25# “sandbag” (a canvas bag filled with a bunch of little free weights) and a 10# dumbbell for some of the exercises. Also, I did this while watching Aly Raisman’s documentary, which was very motivational. Some days are harder than others to motivate myself to work out when I’m at home, and I think that has a lot to do with the fact that:

a) I don’t have a workout buddy.

b) I currently don’t go to a gym when I’m staying at home.

c) I don’t go to fitness classes, a CrossFit box, etc. where there is a community of people pushing one another during the workout.

I’m not complaining in the slightest bit— I have an awesome healthy living blogger community (and Instagram) to help me get moving when I’m feeling in a slump, and I tend to be intrinsically motivated.

However, it’s not quite the same as working out with other people. Thus, I turned on Aly Raisman’s documentary because it was almost like I was working hard with someone. Actually, it was probably more that I was just plain inspired by her. Sometimes I might even put on another workout video on Youtube, even if it’s not the workout I’m doing. I just like the fact that someone else is sweating next to me…virtually.

I’M WEIRD, I KNOW. Many times I am indeed normal and I just blast some good pump up music.

I guess that’s another reason I’m looking forward to going back to Boston. There are runners everywhere and there’s always energy at the gym!

Moving on… Lunch tasted extra delicious after this workout. I found some leftover banana pancakes in the fridge, so I had three of those with sunflower seed butter and half a sliced banana. Accompaniments were two eggs with sriracha and veggies with hummus.

Breakfast for lunch

I cooked last night too! It was salmon— my favorite fish to eat and one of the only non-breakfast foods I can cook decently. Mom bought a gigantic filet o’ salmon from Sam’s Club, so I cut that into portions and gave the fish a massage with a combo of garlic salt, cracked black pepper, spicy brown mustard, honey, lemon juice, and parsley.

Baked at 400F in our toaster oven for 9 minutes. That probably sounds like our fish was still sushi-raw, but the smaller space in the toaster oven speeds up the cooking time, and we like our salmon “medium-rare.” It’s 10x more tender that way!

And as a “sending-off celebration” in Pop’s words, we ate this ice cream extravaganza that I created:

Yum yum yum yummm (sung to the Tums tune.)

Catch ya in Boston! The start of school means that posts will probably be on the back burner. Bear with me, I love you all and I want to blog as often as I can 🙂

So tell me: How do you motivate yourself to work out at home/when you’re by yourself?

Brother-Sister Rivalry

Hello and Happy Memorial Day!

This weekend has been the closest taste of summer yet, which I guess is often true once Memorial Day swings around. The community pools open, the air fills with BBQ smoke, and the Hugh Jass (stole that from Kath) bumble bees start harassing me. A lot of marvelous things have been happening in the past few days including some moves, a Frozen movie date, treats, and a trip to Boston!

MiMM

All marvelous things, yes? Thanks for hosting as always, Katie!

Here are the highlights:

Friday

1) Finished the AP Bio exam and keep myself from jumping up and down like a maniac.

2) Went to the gym for some moves:

5 min. arc trainer, then 3 sets of each:

  • 10 pistols each leg + 20 Bulgarian split squats each leg
  • 1 min. wall sit + 30 side jump lunges (my glutes were sore for two days AGAIN)
  • 20 hamstring ball roll-ins + 20 single leg bridge pulses

I was gonna do abs, so I started to do some exercises, but then I stopped because I just wasn’t feelin’ it.

3) Ate my new favorite dessert:

You’re welcome.

Saturday

1) Baked the best banana muffins (from Two Peas and Their Pod) I’ve ever had:

DSC_8136

Fresh out of the oven with almond butter— this is what dreams are made of.

2) Went grocery shopping for two bunches of bananas, two tubs of 2% Greek yogurt, and two containers of hummus. It was like Noah’s Ark on that checkout conveyor belt.

3) Attended a super late lunch/early dinner with the other religious education teachers and volunteers, courtesy of our pastor who is retiring this year!

4) Worked on handstands. I’m starting to hover more with that freestanding handstand! I’ve caught the Crossfit Games bug. (You can yell at me for the fact that I’ve never done Crossfit in my life.)

5) Watched Frozen with one of my best friends, Daliza! Now I understand the hype for that movie— Anna is my hero and if Olaf were real, he’d be my best friend. Daliza and I are also working on our duets for some of the songs, so you better watch out for our voices in Frozen 2.

Sunday

1) Drove up to Boston to visit Ben!

2) Disowned him for wearing this shirt:

No.

Northeastern and Boston University sibling rivalry has commenced.

3) Ate a delicious sushi lunch at Avana Sushi:

4) Bought some BU gear and put on my (mouse-like) game face:

5) Walked to J.P. Licks for some awesome ice cream. Ben and I shared a scoop of mint cookies and cream (uh, two favorite flavors in one) and a pistachio scoop. Perfection:

Wait, why did I share my ice cream with this kid again?

6) Took a lovely, long stroll along the Charles River. The weather was absolutely PERFECT on Sunday, even though it was supposed to rain according the forecast. The sun was out, there were almost no clouds in the sky, and the temperature was just right (even though I think I did overdress with my jeans and long sleeve shirt). Can we please just pause the weather so that it can be like this forever?

It really hasn’t sunk in that this will be my home for the next four years. I’m excited though!!

Now I’m off to go exercise outside on this warm, sunny Memorial Day, and then we’re gonna dig into my mom’s grilled feast! Hope you all have a wonderful day!

So tell me:

Three fun things you did this weekend!

What are you Americans doing for Memorial Day?

Have you ever watched Frozen?

Patience is a Virtue

Gahhhhhhh.

So I’m sittin’ here on the couch, typing up a blog post, and I need to look back at an old post as a reference. I then realize that all the pictures in the post are just blank boxes. Hm, strange. My server isn’t slow or anything. I try checking a few other past posts, and realize that some of the pictures are absent from them as well…Aw, crap.

I spent a while this weekend trying to make room in my Media Library folder here on WordPress, deleting almost all the pictures I thought I didn’t need anymore. Well it turns out that when you delete a photo from the Media Library, you delete it from the post in which you included it. Darnflubbernuggets.

If you happened to be checking out any of my past posts, you may have noticed this. Thus, for the next couple of days, I will be slowly but surely trying to retrieve all/most of the photos I previously posted so that my blog can be filled with something more exciting than just words again! I will also most likely be getting a media space upgrade. —>Question! If I switch to self-hosted, do I get unlimited media space? This juvenile blogger needs some HELP.

This will certainly require a ton of patience and humility as my dad just told me. *Dramatic sigh*

I actually had some deep-ish post planned for today, but then this whole ordeal popped up outta nowhere, so I’ll save the original post for next week. But just so I don’t leave you with a pathetic post of my petty problems, here are some moves and grooves as of late!

Moves

We did an intense running pacer test in physical education yesterday, and I did fairly well considering I am by no means a runner. In the pacer test, you run back and forth across the gym to a certain marker, and you’re regulated by the sound of a beep. You have to run to the marker by the time the beep chimes, and the time between the beeps progressively gets shorter and shorter, so you have to run faster and faster. It’s as annoying as it sounds.

Besides that short burst of sprinting (that left me pretty tired!), I headed to the gym for an easy 10 minutes on the elliptical followed by some lower body strength exercises (3 rounds of each):

  • 10 bench sits each leg + 25 goblet squats
  • 12-15 Bulgarian split squats + 1 min. wall sit
  • 20 hamstring ball curls + 15 bridge leg lifts each leg

My original post was actually about my workouts and how they still might be more intense than I set out to make them for now. But we’ll get to that next week I guess.

And because food pictures are always fun to look at…

Post-Workout

Dinner

DSC_7417

I already started demolishing this by the time I took this picture. It’s curry quinoa (that mom made—it’s delicious!), spinach/kale mix, grilled chicken, and avocado. Simple, yet so satisfying.

That’s all for today, folks. I’ll try not to mope all day. “Always look on the briiiiight side of life!”

So tell me:

Have you ever deleted something when you didn’t mean to?

Do wordpress.org blogs have unlimited space?

What did you have for dinner last night?
