Virtual Breakfast Date

virtual breakfast date

…I would wish you a blessed Memorial Day (if you live in the US)! If you have the day off, I hope it’s filled with relaxation, sunshine, reflection, and good food! If you’re working/not living in the US, I hope you have a great day anyway 🙂

Always grateful for the valiant and selfless men and women who protect our nation.

…I would tell you that I can check off week one of work at the rehab hospital! It was a looooong week, (but not luxuriously long like our time at Fiona’s summer house the week before). Starting a new job, meeting new people, and not doing anything stupid being on my best behavior is exhausting, which is to be expected. That being said, I am so stoked and thankful for this job. Example of excitement: I get to help with pool therapy!!!

…I would tell you that breakfasts this past week have been fabulous. With work, I’ve had to make a lot of quick yet filling breakfasts. And they must have the “trifecta” because I’m stubborn and obsessive.

…I would tell you that weekend breakfast = pancakes.

…I would tell you that I will be that gal who wears dress pants with sneakers. I am on my feet all day at work, and I care about my feet (as a future physical therapist and as a bipedal human being), so fashion will have to take the back seat. Not that I’m fashionable anyway.

…I would tell you that I get employee gym perks! The employee gym is a dungeon, but it’s nice to have access to some heavier weights and machines.

IMG_1314

…I would tell you that moves and grooves have been downright sweat fests thanks to the hot weather.

IMG_1316

On Wednesday, I walked + did some random plyometrics and drills outside, and I’m pretty sure tiny bugs were flying into me and dying in my sweat.

…I would tell you that I had something akin to baby food before my workout yesterday.

DSC_2378

My girl Christina @foodietunes gave it to me one day this past semester (or two semesters ago?), and I actually really liked it!

…I would tell you that I had these Performix BCAAs (that I won from a Fit University giveaway) after a couple workouts this weekend. I need to go back into my exercise physiology notes to see what BCAAs actually do, haha. They’re super tasty though! “Blue Razz Ice” flavor— so nostalgic.

IMG_1348

thank you for sending me these, Sarah!

…I would tell you that I need to shower so badly as I type this, but I locked a fat fly in my bathroom, and I don’t want to deal with it right now.

…I would tell you that I saw Daliza this weekend!!! She got us into a movie for free since she works at the theater. We watched Love & Friendship, which is a smaller-scale movie based on an early Jane Austen novella.

IMG_1345

I was expecting the movie to be very serious, and I could barely understand the characters’ old-fashioned British accents at the beginning, but as the movie went on, I was pleased to discover that this film is HILARIOUS. If there’s a small indie-film-theater around you, check this out! (Julia, I feel like you’d love this!)

Then Daliza treated me to Cold Stone (I got “Cheesecake Fantasy” in a waffle cone, OMG), and we walked around, catching up and inadvertently pouring melted ice cream all over the streets/our hands/faces.

IMG_1347

…I would thank you all very deeply for your condolences and love regarding Katie’s passing ♥︎

…I would tell you that I’m going to go shower now and face that fly. With God, all things are possible. Matthew 19:26

If we were having breakfast, what would you tell me?

What is your favorite quick and filling breakfast?

What is the best movie you’ve watched recently?

What are you doing today?

Things My Dad Says

This post is brought to you by Pop (aka my dad).

Pop and I had a very low-key weekend— nothing extraordinary, but everything a relaxing weekend should be. This meant that I got to spend lots of quality time with Pop and really listen to some of the insightful, ridiculous, and funny things he has to say (and do).

Our Friday night consisted of some slow cooker split pea soup, which was thick, naturally creamy, and reminiscent of my childhood.

DSC_1660

My dad is going easy on the carbs lately, so he’s been loving cheese and fruit plates with a few 34 Degrees crisps for “dessert”.

*FaceTiming with bro and mom*

Dad: “Alison’s making me a cheese plate! Just like on the cruise!”

We woke up to a stormy morning on Saturday, and because I thought the world should know this immediately, I snapchatted the weather from my bed.

Rainy Saturday mornings basically require hot oats for breakfast. A bowl for Pop and a bowl for moi.

*Sky Full of Stars starts playing on my Spotify*

Dad: “Oooo! ‘Cause you’re a skyyyy, you’re a skyyy….’*starts raising the roof*

The rest of my day was pretty lazy. I did a barre workout from Youtube, caught up on blog reading, ate a delicious lunch, and used up some more Blend swag (STILL!!!).

*Dad sees my lunch.*

Dad: “Mmmm that looks really good!”

Me: ……… “Do you want the same thing?”

Dad: “Can you make an egg white version?” *smiles*

Me: “Mhmm.”

It makes me chuckle and makes me happy when he subtly suggests that he wants me to make him food 🙂

I think this might be my favorite vanilla protein powder ever! (No sponsorship.)

Coming back from church….

Me: “I’m doing the barefoot mile tomorrow.”

Dad: (after a few seconds) “Barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen!…Have you heard that saying before?”

Me: “What does that mean?”

Dad: “I think it was an antifeminist saying during World War II or something.”

Me: “Hm, well it sounds like me.”

Dad: “What??”

Me: “The saying sounds like me.”

Dad: “You’re barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen???”

Me: “The barefoot in the kitchen part at least.”

Dad: “Oh! I was about to have a heart attack! I thought maybe you knew something that we didn’t!”

Me: “DAD! No!”

Later at night….

Dad: (Excitedly) “Do you wanna help me sign some checks?” [for church collection]

Me: “…..Kayyyyy.”

Dad: “We’ll have a check signing party!”

Me: *nods* “Yeeeeep.”

P.S. If you’re wondering what I’m talking about with the barefoot mile, the wonderful and inspiring Emily invited me via Facebook to Joy International’s Global Barefoot Mile on Sunday. Basically, you walk a mile barefoot in solidarity with all the children in Cambodia and other third world countries who have no shoes and who are victims of sex trafficking.

You can donate at Joy International’s website!

It hurt, but that just made the walk more meaningful.

It’s also been HOT and HUMID this weekend!!! You step outside and you can’t breathe for a second.

DSC_1670

to cool down on Sunday afternoon: Quest peanut butter protein powder (from Blend also) blended with ice and milk

Dad and I made a trip to Costco to stock up on essentials for the next couple weeks, and our pickup included this beautiful wild caught salmon. I baked it at 400F for 12 minutes with some olive oil, balsamic, honey, and black pepper.

DSC_1672

Yep, lots for leftovers for the week! Served with soba noodles and maple mustard salad.

DSC_1673

In the words of Emeril: BAM!

Dad: “That salmon was so amazing, I can’t believe it!”

Me: “Oh thanks…” *nervous laugh*

Dad: …….. “I meant that it’s incredible how good it tastes. I didn’t mean it like that. That wasn’t meant to reflect you. You brought out the freshness of the salmon.”

Me: “I’m glad you liked it.” 🙂

Last but not least, my friend Michael took Daliza and me to Dairy Queen for our first time ever last night! Appropriate for National Ice Cream Day, eh? (<—Canadian side emerging.)

Processed with VSCOcam with m5 preset

The place was hoppin’ at 9 PM on a Sunday. Maybe because it’s one of two Dairy Queens in our tristate area. Maybe because the heat compels people to get ice cream.

Processed with VSCOcam with m3 preset

Mint Oreo Blizzard jeah jeahhhhh. They didn’t do the flip-the-cup-upside-down to show you how thick and creamy the blizzard is. I’ll forgive them though because the heat was making the ice cream melt faster than the Wicked Witch of the West.

Processed with VSCOcam with p5 preset

And that, my friends, is my weekend in a {rather large} nutshell. I love you, Dad ♥

Hope you all have a fantastic week ahead!

So tell me:

Do any of your parents, aunts/uncles, grandparents say funny things all the time? My mom is also a hoot.

Did you celebrate National Ice Cream Day?

Was it hot in your neck of the woods?

My Random Memorial Day

Memorial Day weekend is over. School should also be over. Memorial day weekend always makes me feel like we’re on summer break, but here we are with two weeks of school left. There isn’t much to complain about though— all but one of my final exams are over, it’s senior year, and I like my schoolmates…most of the time.

I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day, remembering our troops and spending time with family and friends! Mine started off pretty late since I decided to go to bed unreasonably late on Sunday night. Once I was up, I realized my mom was already starting the grill prep for our Memorial Day BBQ!

DSC_8182

Summer bounty in the raw

I felt so under-accomplished when I saw that she had already gone shopping, prepped some of the vegetables, started cooking the pork, and was dressed so nicely. My dad was also up and ready to do a load of yard work. Meanwhile, I rolled out of bed in my pajamas at 11 AM.

I helped her season the veggies if that counts for anything. I also tried to fix our wi-fi connection to no avail (I’m connected directly to our modem right now via cord).

Well, daughter of the year here snacked on mom’s amazing grilled feast throughout the afternoon:

Evidently, we like the char.

Everything was incredible. Tip: Season your vegetables with sesame oil and black pepper before grilling— simple yet so flavorful! My mom grilled enough to feed an army, so we have leftovers for DAYS. Thanks, ma! And thanks, pa, for making our yard look pretty 🙂

After I digested, I took my moves outdoors because…it was Memorial Day! Outdoor fun is practically a necessity. I did some jump roping, handstands, and then a short circuit workout from Purely Twins. It was a hot one out there yesterday!

photo 1

I’m growing a mane apparently. Also, I feel like I’m wearing that shirt whenever I take a workout selfie. I promise I wash it.

Then I walked over to see my friend Daliza who was working. I also got ice cream because that’s the perfect post-workout snack, right?

photo 2

Cookies and cream + cherries jubilee

I’ve had ice cream for the past three days, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m getting sick of it. I’ll fall for it again soon enough though, I’m sure. Ice cream and I are tight like that.

I hung out with Daliza for a couple hours (apparently I like to watch her scoop ice cream and sweep floors for that long) before coming home to do some homework, read blogs, and eat dinner.

Now I’m sitting here, smelling of sweat and sunscreen because I still haven’t showered yet. TMI?

Have a terrific Tuesday, friends!

Secrets of the Weekend

Good morning!

It’s gettin’ hot up in here!!!….

…Because our AC isn’t working and it finally hit 80F in our area this weekend. I mean, I guess I’ve been wishing for heat since the black hole of winter seemed to take forever to leave us, but I’m not a fan. I just WANT a fan. (I’m over-exaggerating. It’s really not that bad at all— I get to sleep without a blanket and I don’t have to dry my hair!)

Besides that, my weekend was pretty darn marvelous!

MiMM

Check out all the marvelousness of Monday over on Katie‘s blog!

For this weekend recap, I’m gonna tell you all the fun stuff that happened as usual, but I’m also going to let you in on a few secrets about each thing. Consider it a trip inside my noggin (remember when I was pondering calling my Thursday thoughts posts “Loggin’ the Noggin?“). That is, if you even want to go into that weird place that is my brain.

Friday

Dance company auditions for the 2014-2015 company were on Friday, and even though current company members do not have to re-audition (and senior company members are leaving for college), we all still attend and do the audition class to set an example for the potential incomers. I think it went well for everyone!

Secret about the audition: A lot of girls dancing together in a stuffy studio = STINKY. It was a little tough to breathe in there sometimes, not gonna lie.

In the evening, I went to go get ice cream with my friend Michael (my super cool prom date)! We had a nice time chatting about college and such. We also went to the grocery store next door so I could buy bananas, because I need more spotty bananas in my life.

photo 2

Secret about this ice cream: It’s “almond cream” Italian ice, and I was kinda disappointed because I really wanted creamy gelato instead.

Secret about when I got home: I ate a spoonful of peanut butter.

Saturday

On Saturday morning, company had a quick and low-key dance rehearsal for a show coming up in June.

Secret about the rehearsal: I was practically falling asleep because those dance studios are like saunas.

When I got home, I ate lunch and made these “Carrot Spice Scones” from a box mix my mom bought from Bed, Bath, and Beyond for $1.50.

DSC_8072

Secret about this “scone”: The package falsely advertised these as scones, because they were WAY too fluffy to be scones. These were more like muffin tops, which isn’t a bad thing at all. 🙂

Mother’s Day Sunday

Breakfast in bed for my beloved mother! She is obsessed with all things coconut, so I was basically obliged to make her something coconutty. I decided on coconut-crusted cinnamon raisin French toast for the queen.

DSC_8074

Secret behind this breakfast: I only made one thing on this plate— the French toast. My dad cooked the turkey sausage and my mom had cut that fruit a few days before. Heh.

I made some French toast for myself as well while we were at it. I topped mine with Greek yogurt, peanut butter, seared banana slices, and maple syrup. Glass o’ soy milk on the side.

DSC_8076

So awesome.

Then, since I went to bed super late on Saturday night and woke up early to make breakfast, I took a super long nap on the couch. It was gloooorious and it got me energized for some outdoor moves. I was really in the mood to jump rope, so I completed Julie’s Jump Rope + Lower Body Workout with just bodyweight.

Secret about working out outside: Since I was using my phone as a timer, I left it out on the mat under the sun, which resulted in my iPhone getting a short fever.

photo 1

I also practiced double unders (which I showed off on Instagram)! They’re my new favorite thing to do now (behind burpees of course).

Secret behind the double unders: I got lucky with this shot because this is probably the most I got in a row all day yesterday. I’m still happy I can do them though!

Hot weather means SMOOTHIES, so I had one of the green (and very nut-buttery) variety for lunch:

  • ½ c. soy milk
  • half banana
  • handful of frozen strawberries
  • big handful of spinach
  • ¼ c. oats
  • ½ scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1 heaping tbsp. peanut butter
  • 1 heaping tbsp. almond butter

DSC_8077

With Greek yogurt on the side of course!

Secret behind this smoothie: This plus a ton of water and a bunch of crackers with hummus gave me a food baby.

After a few more hours of homework and procrastinating in the form of Instagram stalking, we headed out to dinner at a Korean/Japanese restaurant! Guess what. No Groupon this time. :-O

Complimentary cold cinnamon ginger tea as a palate cleanser/dessert

Secret about dinner: I made the mistake of wearing pants that are getting too small for me. You can probably guess why that was a problem.

Secret about what I’m doing right now: Watching Fantastic Mr. Fox — one of my favorite animated movies ever.

And those are the secrets of my life from this weekend! I hope you’re not too mind-blown by my exhilarating life.

Hope you all have a lovely Monday!

So tell me:

Did you go outside this weekend?

Italian ice or gelato?

What did you do yesterday?

Any secrets you’d like to share!
