Current Simple Joys

Life is hectic and cluttered enough, so let’s keep things simple today.

Five Minute Friday #3: Making Changes to Fulfill a Purpose

I have a new companion who comes with me to all my meals, but I’m not really sure I want him there… He kinda weighs me down sometimes, but I can’t let go of him, and I always pay attention to what he has to say.

IMG_0154 IMG_0158

See him? Mr. Exercise Physiology. I have an exam for on Tuesday, and I need all information about metabolism to saturate my brain.

Other recent happenings include lots of sandwiches with guac…

IMG_0150 IMG_0157

…and Lent! It started this Wednesday, so this week’s Five Minute Friday vlog has to do with making changes in one’s life in order to fulfill a purpose (not just from a Catholic perspective).

link to the video here!

Catholics do have set rules for fasting and abstinence throughout Lent. Here are some infographics if you’re curious!

Ooo Valentine’s Day is this weekend, isn’t it? Flashback to when I wrote a letter to my future husband on this blog for Valentine’s Day two years ago. “Dear No One” is still my theme song.

Happy weekend!!!

So tell me:

If you participate in Lent, what are you giving up/adding? Giving up: makeup and scrolling Instagram (I can post but that’s it). Adding: Must be at least 5 minutes early to everything if I can help it and a decade of the rosary each day.

If you do not participate in Lent, do you feel called to make any specific changes in your life to meet your goals?

What are you doing for Valentine’s Day/President’s Day/the weekend?

I’ll be celebrating “Galentine’s Day” with Rachel tomorrow night! 🙂 The only way I might choose a guy over Rachel is if he comes up to me with a single rose in his mouth, Coldplay/Tori Kelly tickets, and a box of chocolates jar of peanut butter within the next twenty-four hours.

Family Influence on Fitness

Hi!

Okay, even though she bullies me to tears sometimes, I am having Daliza withdrawals. She left with her family yesterday, and I can’t say “I guess so” without getting slightly emotional. I’ll see her back in New York soon, but she’s like my sister, and I want her to come back!

Thankfully, I still have my cousin, aunt, uncle, and parents here. {What am I gonna do with myself in college?} We all had a chill day yesterday, which I loved.

I slept in and came downstairs for another one of my peanut butter banana brown rice bowls (those are too good). I made Daliza some hot mango-peach-banana oatmeal on her last morning with us, since she never had my hot oats before.

Daliza: Hates pizza and pasta. Loves oatmeal.

DSC_0132

Daliza’s family came over for a short time and then we said goodbye to all of them. Afterwards, my uncle, cousin, and I were in the mood to get in some stretching and core work. Random?

photo-2

{Thanks for the picture, Uncle G!}

Stunned that I can still do that after a couple weeks without truly stretching

My uncle, aunt, and cousin are super healthy and fit people that are as passionate about exercise and healthy eating as I am. They do wushu kung fu together as a family, and they are legit. Amy (my cousin, pictured above) also dances and can do things like aerials, L-sits, and one handed handstands on the wall. TEACH ME.

The best part about hanging out with them is that I can gush over all things fitness without feeling like that health nut that no one really wants to listen to. (<— I hate ending on a preposition, but the proper sentence sounded snobby.)

Look at all that fruit.

{photo credit to Uncle G again}

My immediate family is definitely interested in healthy living, so I can talk to them about it often, but these relatives bring it to a whole new level. I believe that having close family members that are passionate about— or at least interested in— fitness and health makes obtaining a healthy lifestyle much more fun and enjoyable.

This family appreciates every bit of movement they can get, even if that means walking farther or using the stairs instead of the escalator. That kinda makes me want to jump for joy. But they also know the importance of rest and treating yourself, which relieves me. I’m not about to give up ice cream. No no no.

We all went to Universal CityWalk in the evening for dinner, and we chose a Mexican restaurant called Antojito’s.

DSC_0146

antojito's

The food was really tasty (especially the guac)! I came in famished and left filled to the brim.

menchie's

But not filled enough to decline frozen yogurt. 🙂

It’s all about balance, moving often, and eating frozen desserts.

So tell me:

Is your family into health and fitness?

Do you find it easier/harder when they are/are not interested in health and fitness?

Too Much Fun

Holy moly.

What a weekend! From Friday afternoon to last night, I have done approximately 16,784 things, but all of it has been so FUN. Except the time I bumped my leg into something and got a very swollen, green bruise. That’s trivial though.

MiMM

Recappin’ this marvelous weekend with Katie!

This is gonna be a huge photo dump, so I’m going to try to keep the words to a minimum! We’ll see how that works out.

Friday

Like I said last week, the music students at my school had a HUGE cook off. It was so legit. The teams were divided by grade, and we were judged on taste, presentation, and overall experience. Seniors won best main dish (my mom’s fried rice and my friend’s samosas) and best overall!

Our theme: World Cup (aka international cuisine)

DSC_8247 DSC_8253

We had some of our guys be waiters and everything. Think we went hard? The sophomores built a gondola. A GONDOLA. Freshmen also made creme brûlée and deviled eggs, no big deal.

In the evening, I watched Frozen for the second time with Daliza, but this time Michael joined us since he had always wanted to watch it (and was jealous that we watched it without him the first time). Daliza and I were obnoxious and sang all the songs out loud during the movie. Heh heh.

Saturday

I spent the whole morning in the kitchen cooking things like this sad excuse for a steak and potato hash:

DSC_8265

I failed to get the potatoes crispy. Disappointing.

Later, I headed outside for some fun moves: I did four rounds of a jog around my cul de sac, 5 burpees, 15 split squats each leg, 20 double unders, 20 triceps dips, and 5 burpees. I did NOT do this for time whatsoever. I took multiple breaks to snapchat Davida and change the music on my computer.

Then I came inside and did some YOGA! I hadn’t done these poses in a while, but I surprisingly improved since last year! Or at least I think I did…

PS— we were all wearing red because at church we celebrated Pentecost. Basically, the red is reppin’ the fire of the Holy Spirit!

Sunday

*Arman‘s (the frenemy) birthday!!!*

I went on a run/walk with Michael at noon, which was fun, but also draining because it was blazing out there! I sweat so much that I had to restrain myself from putting my mouth under the water faucet when I got home. bobesponja-seco

I also made Michael do pushups with me because I’m annoying a great friend!

Lastly (promise!) was the final dance company picnic. *Tear* All I’ll say is that there was amazing food, wonderful company (literally), and the best hugs ever. I love my girls.

That’s. a. wrap.

I understand if you’re annoyed at me for this aimless, overwhelming weekend recap. But if you are, you probably haven’t made it this far.

Anyway, this was an absolute blast of a weekend, and I thank God for being able to spend some quality time with my friends as high school comes to an end. TODAY IS OUR LAST DAY!

Have a great Monday, everyone!

So tell me:

Do you like yoga?

Did you do anything outdoors this weekend?

Three fun things you did this weekend!

My First Time {At Chipotle}

Good morning!

This is the last week before spring break, and I can hardly stand it. Last week I said I had two field trips and a college visit on Friday, but that has decreased to one field trip and a college visit. I decided to pull out of one of the trips so I wouldn’t be too stressed over making up work.

Not gonna lie, I had a mini breakdown on Saturday morning because I was overwhelmed by all the things I had to do this weekend and the fact that I haven’t been getting that much sleep. Not insomnia or anything. Just overall, I was fatigued and not a fan of getting up early on Saturday and Sunday after long days and late nights. I mean, everything that happened this weekend was super fun, but at the same time, I just wanted to slow down and rest. I didn’t need to cry, but I just vented to madre, and I felt much better afterwards.

It’s weird— I wouldn’t cry if I didn’t have anyone to talk to, but once I get the words flowing, the tears follow shortly after.

It is springtime.

Other than that episode of typical Alison, my busy weekend was still nothing short of marvelous!

Thanks for hosting, Katie!

Friday

I received this Polar Loop activity tracker in the mail on Thursday because I won it from Gina‘s giveaway a while ago (luckiest win I’ve ever scored)!

DSC_7822 DSC_7823

I don’t need it for any reason in particular, but I’ve been wearing it for the past few days to see what it has to say about my activity throughout the day. Since I don’t have the heart rate monitor with it, I know it doesn’t show the most accurate readings, especially when it comes to calories (seriously, I don’t pay attention to those counts at all). I don’t completely know how to work the thing yet in terms of setting daily goals and such; I apparently need to walk, jog and jump, like, an extra hour every day, even if I’ve been dancing and walking ALL DAY. Yeah, no. I’ll probably end up giving it to mom for her walking/running ventures.

It makes for a pretty sleek watch though!

Moves

I headed to the gym after school to do a bodyweight upper body workout that looked like this:

5 min. row warmup + supersets of the following:

  • 15 TRX rows + 10 TRX pike pushups
  • 20 tricep dips + different pushup variations
  • 10 TRX bicep curls + 10 BOSU pushups
  • 40 sec. pulling down on the rope machine + 40 sec. pulling up on rope machine

I may or may not have done some core exercises. I forget!

After a quick, but necessary, afternoon nap, my friends from company, Livv and Jane, went to our other friends’ (from company) senior high school musical production of Legally Blonde! We actually bought the last three tickets available, so we were sitting in the very back corner of the theater, laughing our heads off and making comments at everything like little rascals. 😉 It was such a great show though!

Thanks for this beautiful selfie, Livv. Freaks in the back of the theater.

Saturday

Up and at ’em at 8:20 AM (okay, that’s not that early, but this girl was still exhausted) for an altar server meeting at 8:45 AM.

After getting back, I made a comforting bowl of banana oats with Greek yogurt and sunflower seed butter. The usual.

DSC_7830 DSC_7831

I maneuver my spoon to save the nut butter for last 😉

Then it was off to assisting dance class at 11 AM, followed by my very last Saturday modern class of my high school career. 😦 It was a great, challenging class. After that, most of company (some people had prior engagements) walked over to the train station to go the city. We had a performance at Peridance that evening!

Once we got to Grand Central, we subbed it over to Union Square, where I had this stuff for the first time:

IMG_3938

Is Chipotle popular or something?

I finally “lost my Chipotle virginity” (<—my dad is so creeped out that I said that), and it was fantastic. The guac mountain was as good as people say it is. I must have gotten a little excited and asked for way too much food, because this bowl easily turned into THREE meals (lunch, dinner, and then lunch the next day) for myself. Now that’s a deal!

We made a Starbucks stop and then hung out at the park for a bit before going to the Peridance Center for warmup, tech rehearsal, and the performance, which started at 8:30 PM. Luckily, we were third in the program, so once we finished performing, we booked it out of there. Girls were beat from the long day.

IMG_3945

No, this isn’t part of our dance. We’re just weird.

Before catching the train back home though, we were craving something…

IMG_3948

Shake Shack vanilla frozen custard. Creaminess factor was unreal.

Sunday

That alarm could not have sounded worse at 7:40 AM. Dad and I had a religious education faculty meeting at 8:30, so that happened, followed by teaching per usual. I do love teaching, so there is no complaining there! I attended 11:30 AM Mass afterwards.

It was an absolutely gorgeous day yesterday, so I took a short study break to do some sun salutations and random burpees outside. The Polar Loop was also urging me to move around, so I thought, heyyy why not?

A two hour nap also took place, which was just what my body needed.

I baked.

I did homework.

I read blogs.

I typed this.

I ate dinner.

DSC_7832

Spinach, soba noodles, curry chicken, sriracha

And then I realized: Life is wonderful. And I’m such a drama queen for crying about it.

I’ll work on it 😉

Happy Monday, friends!

So tell me:

Do you like Chipotle?

What was the best thing you ate this weekend?

Do you just cry sometimes? Please make me feel like less of a baby.

What did you do this weekend?
