My First Spa Day

All good things must come to an end!

That’s been our motto for the past couple of days as everyone staying at our Florida home has been going back to their real homes for work and school. Mom and I were the last two left, so we spent Saturday cleaning and packing up the house and all our belongings. Despite “closing up shop”, it’s been an awesome (and super long) vacation, so there is absolutely nothing to be sad about.

Friday

Especially when you end the vacation with a spa day! This was my first spa day since I’m eighteen years old now. All my little girl dreams came true.

Pre-spa breakfast was avocado toast with a dippy egg and a banana on the side.

DSC_0711

We went to the Ritz Carlton spa for the day (ooh la la, I know), and the staff was incredibly kind (like, sometimes I was uncomfortable with how nice they were). They even allowed my day at the spa to be free of charge since my mom and aunt were both paying for day passes and facials.

Four thumbs up for customer service (I’m counting my toe thumbs)!!

Our spa day started with moves at the fitness center. I ran for 20 minutes on the treadmill and then completed Hillary’s arm and ab superset workout with 10-20 burpees after each superset instead of kettlebell swings.

Thanks for creeping on me during my workout, Madre

I was feelin’ weeeeak by the end of my workout, so a nourishing lunch afterwards was just perfect.

“Bento box” with seared ahi tuna, mixed greens, three bean salad, and farro salad

I savored every last bite of this plate since it was all so delicious and fresh. The price was also great for all this food (look at all that tuna)!

Following lunch, we showered in the snazzy spa showers, put on the classic white robes, and then chillaxed.

You bet I had some of those yogurt pretzels

I attempted to go into the sauna, but I only stayed for 5 minutes because I felt like a baking cookie. And the steam room…lasted 5 seconds. I couldn’t see anything and I couldn’t breathe. Nuhthanks.

The jacuzzi on the other hand…

Processed with VSCOcam with t1 preset

…yeah I could do that. I’m such a juvenile.

I spent my time in the jacuzzi for a bit, but I dried off and headed back to the empty studio in the fitness center to stretch while my mom and aunt were getting their faces lathered and massaged. I also kept snacking on the complimentary apples and snack mix, as well as the infused water. Alllllll the day. Strawberry-infused water was my favorite!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

I had a wonderful stretching session by my lonesome, and I even did a tiny bit of ballet at the barre. Oh how I miss it!

Is it sad that I was sore from stretching the next day? I guess I deprived my muscles of oxygen for a little too long during my deep stretches (after not having stretched in forever).

Eventually, our rejuvenating spa day came to an end. (Not that I really needed rejuvenation after a two-week vacation in Florida…) We later joined the dudes for dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant.

Rice vermicelli with grilled shrimp and abundant herbs and veggies

Then we went home for ice cream to balance out all the greens eaten throughout the day. 😉

Saturday

Florida was super chilly (by Florida standards), so hot oats hit the spot for breakfast!

DSC_0713

½ c. quick oats cooked in ½ c. water and ½ c. 2% milk // half a sliced banana, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, vanilla protein powder, pinch of salt stirred in // glob of peanut butter on top

As I mentioned at the top of this post, mom and I spent the day cleaning and packing while also dropping off family members at the airport for their respective flights. We did take a shopping break at TJMaxx in the late morning though!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

I’m season-confused. I got a sweater and three pairs of shorts, and I’m going back to single-digit temperatures in Boston. Spring will come soon enough, right?

A clean-out-the-fridge lunch was in order that afternoon: avocado toast with our last egg + practically half a box of spinach with tons of feta cheese. Plus an unpictured clementine and a million veggie straws aka one of the most addicting snacks out there.

DSC_0716

Oh my goodness, too many leaves in my stomach. But I enjoyed this simple lunch nonetheless!

After a long day of cleaning (and church in the evening), Madre offered to take me out to dinner at Seasons 52, a restaurant we had both been wanting to try for a while. I gratefully agreed!

seasons52f Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

To start: grilled chicken pesto flatbread

The flatbread was to die for. Everything was packed with flavor but not too salty— a balance that is hard to come by!

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Mom’s order: pork tenderloin with sweet potato mash and roasted vegetables

She shared a good hunk of pork tenderloin with me, and mannnn was it delicious. I think I closed my eyes at one point as I savored the tender, flavorful piece of meat. Dishes like these prevent me from becoming a vegetarian.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

My order: “Winter Vegetable Tasting” that included citrus farro quinoa salad, a black bean & veggie soft taco, roasted golden beets, broccoli rabe, and grilled tofu with fruit salsa

There was not a thing on this plate that we didn’t enjoy! The citrus farro quinoa salad was our favorite though. We must re-create it at home!

I totally saved room for dessert, since we kept seeing waiters and waitresses walk around to other tables with plates of dessert shots.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

They brought out an assortment of mini desserts in shot glasses from which you could choose. If I remember correctly, they had: carrot cake, chocolate peanut butter mousse, pecan pie, s’mores, caramel macchiato, strawberry cannoli, key lime pie, blueberry lemon custard, and raspberry brownie.

Talk about tough life choices.

Without much hesitation, I chose the carrot cake, and mom chose the raspberry brownie. I ended up eating all of mine and most of hers. They were mini, so it’s a little more acceptable to eat 1.5 desserts, yes?

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Thanks for the fabulous dinner, Madre!

Sunday

Since we went to church on Saturday evening, mom and I got to sleep in before doing some last minute cleaning of the house.

I was also able to squeeze in some moves outside as it started to drizzle a bit: 5 minute jump rope warmup + Purely Twins’ crazy burpee leg workout (loved this!!!) + 8 minute ab tabata.

The ab tabata was 4 rounds of 20 seconds work, 10 seconds rest of weighted Russian twists, modified V-ups, crossover knee to elbow planks, and spiderman planks.

Processed with VSCOcam with m3 preset

I washed that shirt before wearing it again, promise.

As always, a day of travel calls for overnight oats!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Now we’re en route to New York, but this time we’re taking the auto train rather than road tripping like we did on our way down to Florida. There’s snow in the northeast and I’m not sure if our bodies are ready for the temperature shock.

I’ve obviously been spoiled silly on this vacation, but I am looking forward to school, schedules, and just feeling productive. Nevertheless, I am beyond thankful for the family time and amazing experiences we’ve had in Florida!

P.S. I used so many parentheses in this post. Sorry, I love asides apparently.

So tell me:

Have you ever had a spa day?

Have you ever gotten sore from stretching? Please say yes.

What is your favorite cold-weather food?

Which of the dessert shots would you choose?

WIAW: Benefit Week Eats

Good morning!

I hope you all had a good-spirited April Fools’ Day! Nothing much happened around here. The only thing some people (including myself) did in school was turn on our cell phone alarms for 2:23 PM, and then we left them in our lockers to make a commotion right before school ended. Apparently it caused a little bit of concern, since I guess it is alarming (literally) when all the lockers seem to come to life. It wasn’t anything groundbreaking though. After all, we’ve gotta save some juice for senior prank 😉

With the lack of posts all last week, I have not shown my recent eats! What a shame since I obviously love posting food pictures (*cough* Instagram). So naturally, I’m joining this week’s WIAW party to share what fueled me through my moves and grooves during Benefit Week!

WIAWbutton

As always, hosted by my hero, Jenn. 😉

In absolutely no particular order, here are some of the things I’ve been eating:

Dinner with the family (Ben was home for a day!) on Sunday! Ben got Sambal chicken and seafood. The other three of us shared a huge Sushi for Two platter. We also had some spring rolls as appetizer. Mmmmm.

How’s THAT for a recent eats recap?! It’s a good thing I just ate dinner, because otherwise, I would be hangry right about now. 😉

I hope you all have a great day!

So tell me:

What is the best vegetable you’ve eaten recently?

What do you like to put in wraps?

WIAW: Food Collage Style

Guess what? There is a high possibility of yet another snow day tomorrow. Winter break is startin’ early, kiddos! I mean, we’ll still have Friday, but that’s Friday and Valentine’s Day, so sweets will be involved and concentration on school will NOT be involved. 😀

Speaking of which, I’m glad some of you enjoyed the letter to my future husband yesterday. My dad told me it was a change of pace for the blog, but I like giving you guys some insight into the deep, mysterious recesses of my heart….Ha. 😉

Other times (most of the time), I just love sharing my eats with you all. This is where WIAW comes in!

Hope you all have a fabulous Wednesday!

So tell me:

What have you been eating lately?

Favorite meal this week?

Is a snow day coming for your area as well?

WIAW: Food Showdown

Today is yet another snow day. Yeah, I don’t even know what school is anymore. Not that I’m complaining! The only thing that concerns me is that I think we have only one more snow day allowed, if any, before we start chipping days off of spring break. That happened last year, and we had to come to school on the Wednesday of spring break……….Not happening again.

Anyway. Onto the WIAW fun hosted by the magnificent Jenn as always! Check out her blog to see tons of other mouthwateringly delicious eats.

WIAWbutton

For the most part, I enjoy the foods I eat (well, one would hope!) but there are always those foods that are just outstanding. This WIAW, I’m showing you some of the food winners in my book from the past week or so with a food showdown! And since I don’t usually take pictures of my lunches (I’m always eating them on-the-go), there is no lunch showdown. 🙂

I guess I should take advantage of this extra day to get ahead on homework, blogging, and such. I always say that I’ll do that, but executing it is a completely different story. Lord, grant me self-discipline.

Happy Wednesday!

So tell me:

What were some “winners” that you ate this week?

Are you a snack monster like me? What is your current favorite snack?

WIAW: Day In the Life of a High School Student

Hello!

I hope your week has been going well so far. The busyness of the weekend has definitely spilled into this week, but it’s all good!

I’ve been seeing a few bloggers do a day in the life post (which is actually one of my favorite posts to read), so I felt like posting one this week as well. Maybe I’m just super nosy, but there’s something fun about knowing what others do on a regular day. Daily life happens, so why not talk about it and share the similarities and differences with one another? I feel like a day in the life post is also a way to reflect on all the little things that brightened our day 🙂

Some of you adults may not want to re-live the high school days, but that’s what I’m bringin’ for ya on this WIAW. Here is a typical day of eats and activities for this high school senior!

WIAWbutton

Hooray for Jenn, the host of the wonderful WIAW party!

6:34 AM — Internal alarm wakes me up one minute before the phone alarm rings. Turn off alarms and decide that I can actually roll out of bed right away. Freshen up in the bathroom.

6:45 AM — Morning prayer + change + makeup.

7:00 AM — Open the fridge excitedly to get my favorite breakfast waiting for me!

DSC_7511

Overnight oats!

Enjoyed while reading and commenting on blogs per usual.

7:35 AM — Kiss mom goodbye and drive off to school.

7:40 AM — Traffic on one of the busier roads + stuck behind a truck stopped in the middle of the road and taking up a whole lane.

7:45 AM — Realize the senior parking lot is full. Go to park at the other lot that’s a little farther away. A little morning walk in the frigid air never hurt anyone…just keep your face down from the burning cold wind.

8:00 AM — School starts.

9:30 AM — Snack in Italian class. Discreetly open the wrapper…

DSC_7509

{Photo taken at home before school} Taste of Nature Polynesian Coconut Breeze bar that my parents brought from Canada. This tasted like a lemony coconut macaroon! So delicious.

10:30 AM — Snag some Cheerios from Kristi in Business Calculus (see my Cheerio algebra here). 😉

photo 2 copy 2

We obviously had an extremely productive class taking statistics of what each student preferred at Chipotle.

photo 3 copy 3

I also learned that I would be in deep trouble if I actually bought stocks in the real world. I’m losing over $3,000 right now. WHOLE FOODS IS LETTING ME DOWN.

photo 1 copy 3

11:50 AM — Lunch tiiiiime!

photo 4

Turkey, cheese, spinach, mustard sandwich {recycled photo}

DSC_7517

Clementine {photo taken at home because I forgot to take one at school}

2:45 PM — Drive my friend home because it’s too flippin’ freezing outside for her to walk home.

3:00 PM — Afternoon snack while reading some blogs and catching up on emails.

DSC_7513

Fage strawberry yogurt

DSC_7514

Popcorn (this handful times, like, 7)

3:30 PM — Conjure up the courage to be somewhat political. I call NY Representative Nita Lowey’s office in DC to tell her that I want her to vote for a certain bill. A young guy at her office answered, jotted down the request, and it was over. I feel like such a citizen! 😉

3:35 PM —  Do homework and study for Italian midterms. I never leave the space heater during this time. I pace back and forth and even do squats in front of it to evenly heat my body, all while trying to memorize Italian phrases.

5:00 PM — Discreetly smile and jump up and down when I find out I got into the University of Maryland and their Honors College! My mom is in the kitchen with me, but I don’t want to tell her about it quite yet. She’s cooking and I’m finishing studying.

Screen Shot 2014-01-28 at 5.12.07 PM

5:10 PM — Give mom a big hug and quickly say, “I got into the Honors College at Maryland.” Her immediate response is to take a picture of the letter on her iPhone and text it to Dad and Ben (she’s obsessed with technological communication, I swear).

A celebratory/pre-ballet snack:

DSC_7516

Homemade granola bar

6:00 PM — Ballet and pointe!

7:30 PM — Eat a few pita chips on the little break transitioning from ballet to pointe.

8:15 PM — I am hungry for dinner! Ballet is the dance class that always leaves me super hungry.

DSC_7518

Farro, leftover Chinese food (fish/tofu), blanched Chinese greens.

Write up this blog post while eating.

9:40 PM — “Dessert” and some more college discerning.

DSC_7519

Dried figs and Greek yogurt

10:15 PM — Shower and get ready to hit the sack. But I actually go to bed within an hour or so.

That’s a wrap! I hope my day was at least a little bit interesting or relatable to you. 🙂 Have a lovely Wednesday!

So tell me:

Do you enjoy day in the life posts?

What have you been eating recently?

What is your favorite snack/granola bar?

Tell me something that you did yesterday!
