Chronicles of Becoming a Grownup II

This is the most hippie thing I’ve ever posted.

I posted “Chronicles of Becoming a Grownup” a year ago (right about this time in the summer too!). And since they are chronicles, there must be subsequent posts!

DSC_2584

I even posted a photo of this exact breakfast in that post. This was yesterday’s breakfast (oatmeal cookie dough cereal via Fitnessista)

This is a quote from my first chronicle post a year ago:

“And don’t get me started on the mental/emotional/spiritual changes and revelations that are occurring as I become a grownup. To be chronicled in the future…”

Lo and behold. ‘Tis the future, and I am going to tell you about some of those mental/emotional/spiritual changes and revelations riiiiiight now.

Alternative title for this post: “Oh, That’s Why That’s a Cliche!

1) Revelation #1: Long story short— my coworker and I were blamed by a patient for unfairly helping another patient at the first patient’s expense. I have learned that I literally cannot make everyone happy, even if my colleagues and I are trying our very best to do so.

2) Adding on to revelation #1: I have to remember not to take things too personally and not to ruminate on how bad I feel about disappointing someone. It reminds me to help people NOT because I gain validation and appreciation but because I truly do care for them. I have to be willing to help, even if I know someone does not like me or he/she might have a negative response.

3) Revelation #2: It’s easy to revert back to my former self when I’m back at home with my family. Sometimes I forget that I don’t “have to” be the baby of the family and I don’t have to bicker with family like I used to.

4) Revelation #3: I find little things a lot funnier than I did when I was a teenager (yes, I know I just became a non-teen 2 months ago). Older folks have so many funny antics and hilarious things to say! Sometimes they’re not the nicest, but that applies to human beings in general.

5) Revelation #4: I find it easier to understand why people act/react in inhospitable ways, especially as I work in a healthcare setting, and I thus feel a little less offended if someone is rude towards me. Not that rudeness is justified, but it can be more understandable.

6) Adding onto revelation #4: I’m (more often, but not always) slower to judge others by isolated character flaws.

6) Revelation #5: The more I learn about others’ hard realities and the stresses that everyone works through in order to “make it”, the easier it becomes to despair sometimes. But there is a difference between empathy and straight up despair. Despair doesn’t help anyone. I cannot justify my sulking just because everyone else is sulking. Get out of your hole (and it’s okay to ask for help!), and someone else might be inspired to pick up his/her head as well.

7) Adding onto revelation #5: Spread joy. ← I used to cringe at how cliche and grossly cheesy that phrase is, but the world can never, ever get enough of it. I don’t know about you, but a genuine smile or compliment can seriously make my day.

8) Revelation #6: You want to be loved. I want to be loved. The person next door wants to be loved. Everyone wants to be loved, so START LOVING. Don’t wait on others. How to love is a whole ‘nother post (or two).

9) Revelation #7: Cliches remain cliches until you realize why they’re cliches. Then they become ingrained life lessons. But of course, just because I learned these lessons a few times doesn’t mean that I don’t completely ignore them and allow my selfish/itch-bay side come out at times. #It’sAProcess

10) Revelation #8: GIFs are my favorite modern way of communicating the inner recesses of my brain.

Hope you have a marvelous Thursday! Just love (like Us the Duo says in this great song):

So tell me:

What are some revelations you’ve had as you became/are becoming a grownup? Can you relate to any of mine here?

What is one cliche that is particularly relevant in your life right now?

Something that has brought you joy this past week!

So Many Emotions

Hello there!

Sorry for disappearing on Friday— I had my fascinating links and everything, and I was trying to type up a post in school, but there just wasn’t enough time. Thursday night was also a whirlwind, which you’ll see in a moment.

I’ve cried {good tears} THREE times in the past four days, so I’ve just been on an emotional roller coaster this weekend. Maybe I’m just hormonal??

MiMM

Linking up with Katie’s MIMM, because being emotional is marvelous 😉

Thursday

Feeling sad yet thankful at our last school concert. I’ve been involved in the music program at my school for 6 years now, so I’ve developed a great relationship with not only my peers in the music program, but my teachers as well. They’re some of the coolest people I know.

Annual concert selfie with Daliza

My friend Daliza was bawling on stage (love you, lady), and the rest of us teared up a little bit too for our last song, “I Will” by the Beatles. Nope, this doesn’t usually happen to seniors at their last concert. We’re just a special breed.

We ate our feelings at the diner with our music teachers and all the seniors that performed.

Shared banana pancakes with Daliza

“Banana pancakes” just like Jack Johnson!

Friday

Feeling stunned that my friend Michael bought me not one, but TWO jars of no-salt, organic peanut butter. As if his prom-posal wasn’t awesome enough!! He says it’s a gift for all the times I’ve given him a ride and the one time I made him a strawberry banana smoothie, but uh…other than that, I didn’t do anything for these!

DSC_8088

Kid knows what he’s doing. Thanks so much, Michael! I’m set for a month now. Maybe. 😉

Feeling just pain emotional while listening to this heart-tugging original song:

Like, sobbing in my bedroom by myself.

Feeling disappointed that the avocado for which I had been patiently waiting to ripen turned out to be a dud. I cut it as usual, and when I twisted it open, the skin just came off by itself…

DSC_8090

I tried to salvage the avocado by cutting around the pit, but it was actually still really hard despite being on the counter to ripen for several days. When I tasted it, I could tell that there was something funky about it, so I chucked it. *sigh*

Saturday

Feeling blessed to see some of my third grade religion students receive their First Communion on such a glorious day!

photo 3

Little angels

Feeling like a bro driving with my window down and sun roof open. Heh.

Feeling energized after a nap and some awesome moves outside. I’m gettin’ a little better at those double unders! The most I strung together was 20. I also got some unassisted pistol squats in there! (I guess eating more helps you become stronger or something ;))

Feeling blissful eating peanut butter banana soft serve again (aka the most ingenious dessert known to mankind).

DSC_8095

Feeling inspired while watching the Crossfit Games Regionals online. They are all INSANE athletes. (<— Feeling guilty because I totally used this as procrastination from my economics paper…whoops.)

Sunday

Feeling touched by the support and love for our pastor at church who is retiring this year. I teared up when one of the other priests sang a song for our departing pastor at the end of our big thanksgiving Mass for him.

Feeling proud that I am Asian…Because I have a mother that can make things like coconut sticky rice with sweet, ripe mangoes.

DSC_8097

Mom: “It’s like a five-star restaurant!”

Indeed, ma!

Feeling confused because our power went out for about 15 minutes, even though the weather was perfect yesterday.

Feeling in awe of my superhero dad. He was serving others non-stop yesterday—giving out report cards at Sunday School, serving Mass, talking to people in the church, going to a pro-life rally, doing political campaigning, and mowing the lawn. Not a peep of a complaint came out of him.

Feeling triumphant finishing my economics paper and presentation!!! I deserve a superman cape too.

And that, my friends, is the palette of my colorful emotions this weekend. Hope you all have a great Monday!

So tell me:

________ made you happy/sad/excited/disappointed/confused this weekend.

What is your favorite ethnic dessert?

Have you ever had an avocado that did what mine did?!

My First Time {At Chipotle}

Good morning!

This is the last week before spring break, and I can hardly stand it. Last week I said I had two field trips and a college visit on Friday, but that has decreased to one field trip and a college visit. I decided to pull out of one of the trips so I wouldn’t be too stressed over making up work.

Not gonna lie, I had a mini breakdown on Saturday morning because I was overwhelmed by all the things I had to do this weekend and the fact that I haven’t been getting that much sleep. Not insomnia or anything. Just overall, I was fatigued and not a fan of getting up early on Saturday and Sunday after long days and late nights. I mean, everything that happened this weekend was super fun, but at the same time, I just wanted to slow down and rest. I didn’t need to cry, but I just vented to madre, and I felt much better afterwards.

It’s weird— I wouldn’t cry if I didn’t have anyone to talk to, but once I get the words flowing, the tears follow shortly after.

It is springtime.

Other than that episode of typical Alison, my busy weekend was still nothing short of marvelous!

Thanks for hosting, Katie!

Friday

I received this Polar Loop activity tracker in the mail on Thursday because I won it from Gina‘s giveaway a while ago (luckiest win I’ve ever scored)!

DSC_7822 DSC_7823

I don’t need it for any reason in particular, but I’ve been wearing it for the past few days to see what it has to say about my activity throughout the day. Since I don’t have the heart rate monitor with it, I know it doesn’t show the most accurate readings, especially when it comes to calories (seriously, I don’t pay attention to those counts at all). I don’t completely know how to work the thing yet in terms of setting daily goals and such; I apparently need to walk, jog and jump, like, an extra hour every day, even if I’ve been dancing and walking ALL DAY. Yeah, no. I’ll probably end up giving it to mom for her walking/running ventures.

It makes for a pretty sleek watch though!

Moves

I headed to the gym after school to do a bodyweight upper body workout that looked like this:

5 min. row warmup + supersets of the following:

  • 15 TRX rows + 10 TRX pike pushups
  • 20 tricep dips + different pushup variations
  • 10 TRX bicep curls + 10 BOSU pushups
  • 40 sec. pulling down on the rope machine + 40 sec. pulling up on rope machine

I may or may not have done some core exercises. I forget!

After a quick, but necessary, afternoon nap, my friends from company, Livv and Jane, went to our other friends’ (from company) senior high school musical production of Legally Blonde! We actually bought the last three tickets available, so we were sitting in the very back corner of the theater, laughing our heads off and making comments at everything like little rascals. 😉 It was such a great show though!

Thanks for this beautiful selfie, Livv. Freaks in the back of the theater.

Saturday

Up and at ’em at 8:20 AM (okay, that’s not that early, but this girl was still exhausted) for an altar server meeting at 8:45 AM.

After getting back, I made a comforting bowl of banana oats with Greek yogurt and sunflower seed butter. The usual.

DSC_7830 DSC_7831

I maneuver my spoon to save the nut butter for last 😉

Then it was off to assisting dance class at 11 AM, followed by my very last Saturday modern class of my high school career. 😦 It was a great, challenging class. After that, most of company (some people had prior engagements) walked over to the train station to go the city. We had a performance at Peridance that evening!

Once we got to Grand Central, we subbed it over to Union Square, where I had this stuff for the first time:

IMG_3938

Is Chipotle popular or something?

I finally “lost my Chipotle virginity” (<—my dad is so creeped out that I said that), and it was fantastic. The guac mountain was as good as people say it is. I must have gotten a little excited and asked for way too much food, because this bowl easily turned into THREE meals (lunch, dinner, and then lunch the next day) for myself. Now that’s a deal!

We made a Starbucks stop and then hung out at the park for a bit before going to the Peridance Center for warmup, tech rehearsal, and the performance, which started at 8:30 PM. Luckily, we were third in the program, so once we finished performing, we booked it out of there. Girls were beat from the long day.

IMG_3945

No, this isn’t part of our dance. We’re just weird.

Before catching the train back home though, we were craving something…

IMG_3948

Shake Shack vanilla frozen custard. Creaminess factor was unreal.

Sunday

That alarm could not have sounded worse at 7:40 AM. Dad and I had a religious education faculty meeting at 8:30, so that happened, followed by teaching per usual. I do love teaching, so there is no complaining there! I attended 11:30 AM Mass afterwards.

It was an absolutely gorgeous day yesterday, so I took a short study break to do some sun salutations and random burpees outside. The Polar Loop was also urging me to move around, so I thought, heyyy why not?

A two hour nap also took place, which was just what my body needed.

I baked.

I did homework.

I read blogs.

I typed this.

I ate dinner.

DSC_7832

Spinach, soba noodles, curry chicken, sriracha

And then I realized: Life is wonderful. And I’m such a drama queen for crying about it.

I’ll work on it 😉

Happy Monday, friends!

So tell me:

Do you like Chipotle?

What was the best thing you ate this weekend?

Do you just cry sometimes? Please make me feel like less of a baby.

What did you do this weekend?
