15 Signs That I’m Back in Boston

15 Signs That I’m Back in Boston

1) I eat overnight oats the morning I travel to Boston.

2) “Baeeeee!” – my roommate

3) Dining hall food and cottage cheese bowls (and judgement for eating cottage cheese).

4) Absurd amounts of walking.

IMG_9910

I’m shocked that I walked that much yesterday. But at the same time, I’m not.

5) Being the first one in the suite to wake up because I’m hungry. And just being a bottomless pit in general (most likely due to said walking).

IMG_9901

Thank God for pancake mix. (And thank you to my good pal who mailed this to me! You know who you are 🙂 )
IMG_9902

may or may not have snagged a little bit of someone’s butter from the communal kitchen fridge

IMG_9903

may or may not have been disappointed that I didn’t have peanut butter in my dorm at the moment

6) Cold wind that chills my soul.

7) Taking the T (and getting off at wrong stops because I don’t pay attention).

IMG_9900

display of my short stature

8) Going to Mass and lunch with friends on Sunday.

9) Getting salad in my teeth and only realizing it after I leave the ten friends with whom I was just talking/smiling/laughing. (Be better friends!!!)

10) Girl talk in the dorms until we’re all ready to fall asleep. And choosing girl talk over typing up this blog post at night.

11) Always having to stop at the water fountain to fill up my water bottle and Rachel always being “shocked.”

12) This view.

IMG_9911

13) Lots of big hugs.

14) Scheduling meetings and gradually expanding my to-do list.

15) Dorm oats.

To all my fellow Americans, Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! What a man to celebrate, yes? I’ve said this before, but the tour guide in me feels compelled to say it again: He’s a BU alum!

Hope you all have a blessed day wherever you are and whatever you’re doing ♥︎

So tell me:

If you’re in college, what are some signs that you’re back?

If you’re not in college, what are some signs that you’re back to the work week?

Butter or nut butter on your pancakes? Preferably nut butter, but some classic butter can be spectacular.

What are you doing today? Meeting with a friend to work on a Catholic Center presentation, eating lunch with Rachel, going to the gym perhaps, and just soaking up this last day of break!

Currently…

To think that I used to be bored at some points in my life cracks me up. At times now, I WISH I had time to be bored! But not really, because that’s no fun. 🙂

I hope you all have been doing well, since I know you’re all busy bees too. Since I haven’t checked in with life lately, I am sharing some current happenings with you all, inspired by Amanda’s “currently” posts!

Current book: Better by Atule Gawande for my intro to health professions writing class.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Current music: My own voice (I gave up music for Lent). I’m basically like Tori Kelly…with undertones like those of a pre-pubescent teenage boy.

Current guilty pleasure: Watching Jamie Oliver’s FoodTube channel and listening to those melodic British and Italian voices.

Current beverage: Wahhhhter. All the day. I can’t wait for smoothies at home during spring break!!!

It calls to me.

Current food: Apple chips with peanut butter. I mean, I have a lot of things with peanut butter, but this is my go-to right now.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

And just because I haven’t shared my recent eats lately, here are a couple collages. Lots of sandwiches, eggs, and peanut butter per usual.

That bottom right picture is peach cobbler from the dining hall (WOW so good)….with cottage cheese. Sorry if that made you gag, but here’s what happened: I got the cottage cheese first, expecting to just put some usual fruit and granola on it, but then I found the peach cobbler, which of course I could not pass up. So I reasoned, “Well, the fruit is still there, the carbs are still there… I’ll go for it.” So I put the peach cobbler on my cottage cheese.

I must admit that the combo was a little funky fresh at first, but it was still pretty good! I probably wouldn’t do it again though.

Current obsession: Wearing fuzzy tights underneath jeans. Why did I not do this earlier?! My mom bought me a couple pairs of super comfy, fleece-lined tights a while back, and I only recently decided to start wearing them underneath my jeans. My legs are so much happier when I walk out in the frigid Boston wind now. I’m sorry for previously judging people who wear long underwear.

Current wish: That I could read more blogs and not have 300 unread blogs in my reader ahhhh.

Current need: To form more synapses in my brain more quickly so that I can remember everything for my linguistics exam tomorrow and anatomy lab exam on Wednesday.

Current triumph: Not yet tripping on the uneven sidewalks of Boston University (despite almost faceplanting multiple times).

Current bane of my existence: Winter. It’s been long enough.

Current indulgence: This dinner that my roommate treated me to as a late Christmas present. She took me to an on-campus, sit-down restaurant called Late Night Kitchen, which is in the basement of one of our student centers. I was very impressed! Maybe it’s because I was starving, but my pesto grilled chicken sandwich with crispy french fries were ON POINT. (In the words of my roommate, they were “A1.”)

Current procrastination: Right now— I’m blogging to procrastinate my studying 🙂

Current blessing: School. Sometimes I feel like I’m drowning in work, but when I take a step back from the stress, I realize that a) it’s a blessing to be at such an amazing college, b) I’m learning some awesome things, c) there are so many resources and people to help me. What’s there to complain about!?

Current excitement: My next door dorm neighbor/bff Rachel is coming to New York with me for spring break! I’m in charge of taking her around NYC, which means I’m in charge of taking her to eateries and restaurants, which means I’m overwhelmed but so super excited!

Current mood:

Current link: I WANT THIS OMELETTE. It’s mesmerizingly fluffy.

And there you have it, friends! I may or may not be coming back tomorrow with a recap of my NEDA week talk from last Monday. I’m definitely bummed that I wasn’t able to get a post up regarding NEDA week when it was, well, actually NEDA week, but better late than never, right?

I hope you have a fantastic Monday!

So tell me your current…

Things I Learned Last Week

HI!

I know I checked in with Weekly Moves and Grooves yesterday, but I missed sharing life happenings with you all and hearing about your lives too. Last week was jam-packed with studying and activities, so blogging just couldn’t happen.

But now I’m here and ready to share some of the crazy-fun-weird things I learned last week!

Studying with a friend really does do wonders.

I usually like studying by myself, but the night before our anatomy exam, my friend Cassandra and I reviewed all the material by testing each other and using a white board to draw bones, tissues, and muscles. It definitely made me feel more confident during the test!

Breakfast for dinner in the dining halls should be a weekly occurrence.

Carbs and dairy and carbs. The essentials.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Two snow days in a row doesn’t mean a thing anymore.

We had another blizzard last Monday, which resulted in cancelled classes on Tuesday as well. That would be a total of five snow days this semester! What is school?

Some professors are holding classes on a couple Saturdays to make up lectures and labs, which is good from the academic standpoint as well as the *ahem* tuition standpoint.

Oh we had a blizzard yesterday too. It’s time to migrate, like, last month.

Processed with VSCOcam with t1 preset

Officially taller than me.

Boston wears snow beautifully though.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

A snow day does not mean more free time.

Holy smokes, last week was BUSY. The snow days were used to catch up on work, and then the work/appointments/meetings kept coming, which is why I didn’t get to blog.

Busy, but good busy (for the most part). 🙂

Grilled cheese + tomato soup is one of the greatest food combinations.

I already knew this, but I learned that I should have it more often, especially during the winter.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

This grilled cheese was swiss, tomato, and caramelized onions on wheat. Mmmm.

My friends talk about my blog when I’m not around.

Rachel told me, “I was telling Cassandra that if I were Alison, I would be making my dessert look pretty and taking a picture of it.” I am both flattered and embarrassed.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

I will go the distance for brussels sprouts.

I don’t usually like tempeh, but the dining hall was serving orange maple tempeh with brussels sprouts and zucchini, so I got it just for the brussels sprouts.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

The tempeh was bland, but the brussels were worth it.

I am a certified Boston University tour guide!

Come to Boston University so that “I can show you the worldddd…shining, shimmering, splendid!” (<— Aladdin, anyone?)

A little bit o’ love can mean so much to someone.

Some people at the Catholic Center got together to put together Valentines for people who are homeless in Boston. The joy of the recipients is always a reminder of what love is all about— giving. #cheeeeeese

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

How to dissect a cat.

For anatomy. My lab partner and I named our cat Larry (is it terrible that we named him?).

I have a new favorite way to eat cottage cheese!

Remember my usual concoction of cottage cheese with strawberry yogurt, banana and peanut butter last semester? I guess I wanted a new combo along with this new semester. Now I’m loving it with frozen blueberries, peaches, and granola!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Cheetah Girls 2 is still fabulous.

Rachel and I had a little “Galentine’s” night in with popcorn and classic Cheetah Girls 2. We knew all the words to the songs and loved every minute.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

I have a banana problem.

I feel the need to stock up on bananas whenever I leave the dining hall, so now I have enough bananas in my dorm room to make a pyramid out of them.

Chill pill. I’m on it.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Luckily, there are no fruit flies in the winter!

I’m evil for liking raisins.

A loving Valentine’s snapchat from Rachel (who does not approve of raisins at all):

raisin lover

Hope you all have a rockin’ Monday! Happy President’s Day to my fellow Americans! My parents are coming to visit Ben and me for our day off 🙂

So tell me:

One thing you learned last week!

How did you spend your Valentine’s Day?

What is your favorite childhood movie?

Please tell me you like raisins.

Current Simple Joys

New England Patriots REPPIN’!

[Confession #1: I typed that before the game even started…for optimism. Confession #2: I don’t give a single care for football. I just like cornbread, chili, halftime, and a reason to be excited. Confession #3: I was reading blogs throughout the game last night.]

For those of you who either don’t live in the United States or just don’t know why people are talking about bowls being so super, there was a very important football game on TV last night. Or should I say there were a series of weird commercials with some football woven throughout?

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Plus twenty more handfuls of popcorn, another wing, funfetti dip, and microwave pizza rolls. QUALITY DINNER.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

In addition to the simple joy of being in Boston when the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl, this past week has brought about an endless number of other blessings that have been making me smile until I look Asian.

Oh wait.

current simple joys

  • Biscuits with honey butter.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

My friend Arianna taught me yet another trick of the dining hall. When they have “shortcake” for dessert, they provide plain biscuits. She takes those biscuits, pops them in the microwave for a few seconds, and then spreads butter and honey on them. Genius, yes?

  • Spotify. (Below is a shorter version of my entire list of songs on Spotify, in case you were wondering what I’ve been grooving to. It’s a diverse list 🙂 )
  • Celebrating birthdays {and funfetti cake}.

Processed with Moldiv

Happy birthday to Erica! And shoutout to Jonathan, who nailed that funfetti cake like no other.

  • Going to the chapel for Mass in the middle of a busy day of classes.
  • Weird combinations that end up tasting delicious.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Cottage cheese, granola, peanut butter, and applesauce. I’m laughing out loud because I know my friends are probably making barf sounds at this.

  • The unlimited dining plan— I can just swipe into the dining hall for a snack.
  • Human anatomy (seriously).
  • Checking things off your to-do list.
  • Awesome wins for BU Hockey.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset Processed with Moldiv

  • Coming inside after being assaulted by freezing winds.
  • A man on the sidewalk sounding extra cheerful when he said, “You’re welcome!” in reply to my rather dull “thank you.”
  • Sandwiches.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

  • Warm laundry. And when the dorm dryer actually dries all your clothes.
  • Feeling spent yet accomplished after working out.
  • Just talking with friends.
  • Beanies.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

  • When the dining hall has spotty bananas, so that I can take them to my dorm and freeze them.
  • Clear, sunny days and Boston terriers.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

  • Yet another snow day.

That’s right— BU cancelled classes today due to more snow. It’s kind of a joy and kind of a hassle, because it’s nice to have a day off, but…when are we going to have a full week of school? I’m a nerd.

Oh well, that means more time to have dance parties in my dorm room! It’ll be fun active rest because I feel my legs getting sore already from today’s workout (as I type this on Sunday night) ahhhh.

Have a lovely Monday, friends!

So tell me:

Are you pleased with the Super Bowl outcome?

Three of your current simple joys!

What is your favorite app for music?

I Love Dairy {Recent Eats}

Hi!

I don’t know about the rest of the globe, but Boston was soggy sadness yesterday. The gloom, wind, and rain was so nasty that I had to change my pants three times yesterday due to them getting soaked every time I went outside.

IMG_2502

But there are many brighter things to think about besides the weather! Like today being the last day of classes, which means I’m a week out from being done with this semester. Crazypants.

Also, my roommate and I decorated our door for the holidays. We went on the extremely secular side with a Santa Claus “Tinder” profile. I’ve never been on it, but apparently Tinder is some sort of speed-dating-type app. We didn’t win best-decorated door, but props to my roommate for thinking outside of the box with this idea.

IMG_2498

The little bio for Santa says, “Don’t just swipe right [what you do when you don’t like someone on Tinder]. I’ll put you on my naughty list. 😉 “

We’re terrible.

I haven’t shown you all what I’ve been noshing since Thanksgiving! Something that I’ve really come to embrace recently is my love for dairy. My friend Sylvia was telling me about how dairy is addicting because of the lactose, and I told her I was okay with that. Cheese, yogurt, ice cream, milk— if you don’t want it, I’m your girl.

peach apple crisp + vanilla ice cream

That last dessert just called to me. Not to mention some strawberry ice cream I ate straight out of the pint since my roommate bought a few for $0.25 each.

I used to freak out if I ate too much cheese or drank too much milk because the fat scared the crap out of me. ONE SLICE OF CHEESE PER SANDWICH was my rule. ONE CUP OF MILK. Like my life depended on it.

But last night I noticed that the person who made my sandwich put two slices of cheese on it. I contemplated taking a slice off, but a) the two slices were already melted together, and b) I just didn’t care. The more cheese, the merrier, am I right? As for yogurt, cottage cheese, and milk, it seems pretty obvious that I don’t skimp on those either.

I am thankful that I’m not lactose-intolerant, and I’m pretty sure veganism isn’t in my near future, but cheers to milk mustaches and not being able to sing well because of too much lactose!

^^^That sentence did not make any sense.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, compadres! (shoutout to Renee)
