Behind the Scenes #14: Sweets and Pistol Squats

Thinking-Out-Loud

Thinking out loud with the amazing Amanda today!

1. While I was being super domestic on Monday, I started listening to “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” by Daft Punk on repeat for some reason. I hadn’t listened to it in maybe 3+ years, but I forgot how much I actually love that song (probably the only techno song I like). It definitely helped me work harder at scrubbing my bathtub while simultaneously twerking grooving.

2. Speaking of domesticity, here are the fruits of my labor from Tuesday:

More of these delicious applesauce banana muffins + sriracha chicken

Tuesday’s dinner: sriricha chicken with spinach and cabbage and avocado on top. So good!

I highly recommend the muffins and the chicken! Not together.

3. I’ve been eating lots of fun treats at school this week! On Tuesday, my friend, Apaula, let me try one of her homemade macarons that had a Nutella filling. I almost turned it down when she offered me one, but then I thought…Hello? YES I want one.

And since Italians like to have a big celebration for St. Joseph’s Day (yesterday), our Italian teacher let us order some sfince di San Giuseppe pastries (we paid her, and she picked them up from the bakery) to enjoy in class for the special occasion. The sfince is basically a donut-shaped cannoli. It’s as fabulous as you think it is.

photo 1 photo 2

My friend, Kristi,  forced me to take this selfie. Nah she didn’t force me, but I did it anyway. Ew, it’s so creepy.

This pastry was gargantuan. It was 10 AM and I wasn’t feelin’ the huge sugar bomb, so I had about a quarter of it before sharing it with jealous friends who are not in my Italian class. 😉

4. I practiced some more pistol squats at the gym yesterday, but this time, I used the lowest box available to assist me.

photo 3

(No, I didn’t hoard all that equipment for myself. It was just there. I’m not being sarcastic this time!)

I did 3 rounds of 10 on each leg, supersetted with some bodyweight side lunges, and it was tough. I think that’s about as low as I’ll ever get with my short achilles, but I’m pretty proud of even getting to that point. Now I have to work on not looking like my head is about to explode when I do pistol squats.

5. For the first time yesterday, I tried a dried fig with Greek yogurt AND some sunflower seed butter.

DSC_7790

Why haven’t I done this earlier?! It’s my favorite sweet snack on steroids.

6. Mom is coming home today!!! I’ve missed her (and her cooking) so dearly. She won’t be staying for long though… she’s turnin’ right around to go to Europe in a few days! What a world traveler. This just means that my domesticity will increase exponentially. At least I’ll be prepared for college, right?

7. I’ve calculated that I’ve gone through six 32-oz. tubs of Greek yogurt in the two weeks that my mom has been in Florida. I’ve used some of it for cooking, but otherwise, it’s just me + spoon. No, it’s not a problem— I can stop whenever I want. Which just happens to be never. 😉

8. This message from my friend, Anushka, made my night:

photo-2

I mean, she’s the one inspiring me, if anything. I’ve never had carrots and sunflower seed butter together before! I’ll try that combo, Nush. 😉

9. I’ve definitely broken my “no complaining” sacrifice for Lent too many times. When I’m more prudent, I do my best to hold back, but I guess I’m just outspoken, and I speak before I think most of the time. *sigh* It’s never too late to keep trying though!

10. Next week starts one of the busiest, but most exciting weeks of the year! It’s the week leading up to my dance school’s Benefit Concert (since it’s a not-for-profit organization), which is our biggest show of the year. It’s called “Benefit week,” but it’s equivalent to “hell week” in theater. I’ll be at the theater rehearsing or performing from 3/4PM until 8/9PM every day. Just a heads up— I probably will not be able to blog very much at all next week because of this. It pains me, but Benefit week will be a huge whirlwind, and I don’t want to miss some of my last moments performing with company!

Happy Thursday, friends! I hope you have a lovely day 🙂

So tell me:

What have you been cooking lately?

Best sweet treat you’ve eaten recently?

Have you ever tried carrots with nut butter before?

Random thoughts?

Friday Should Be Added to the Weekend {MIMM #18}

Good morning!

I think it’s safe to say that we are actually back into routine mode now. With only one day of school last Thursday and then a snow day on Friday, it basically feels like we haven’t gone back to school yet, which is a-okay with me. Long live Christmas break!

A lot of marvelous things went on this weekend, so the extra day off was definitely welcomed. Can Friday just be added to the weekend?

Linking up with the fabulous Katie for Marvelous in My Monday!

Here’s how my weekend looked:

Snuggling up by the space heater.

DSC_7358

These things are called space heaters because they look like UFOs, right? I love it because it warms me up (if I hog it and sit right in front of it), but it also creeps me out. Whenever it heats up, it makes a weird metallic noise that is like a sound effect from a horror movie….Which means it has to be from outer space.

Sledding with Ben!

IMG_3216 (1)

I cried on Friday night because Ben left for college on Saturday morning after staying with us for a whole semester while he was doing his work-study program here. Our last bro-sis quality time before he left was sledding, something we’ve done since we were nuggets. It was not the most successful round of sledding (we think we’re getting too heavy), but I just loved spending time with him. *tear*

De-grossifying our floors.

DSC_7368

I try to help clean the floors in our highest traffic areas regularly, because they can get nasty really quickly. I just wish I had some birds to come sing on my shoulders and other creatures of the forest as cleaning buddies.

Discovering the InstaFood app.

IMG_3210

My mom heard of this app from a friend, and she wanted me to buy it to try it out (ya know, since we’re basically food photographers now). It’s a pretty fun app if you love taking pictures of your food (especially at restaurants, since it shows the location and time of where you took your food picture). It does cost $1.99, which is $1.99 more than we usually spend on apps, so this is for strict food enthusiasts only. 😉

Epiphany (Three Kings Day)!

IMG_3212This is the cover of my prayer book for this month (we subscribe to Magnificat if any Catholics were wondering), and the king with the green sleeves made me laugh. It totally looks like he’s saying, “Imma hook Baby Jesus up with some frankincense.”

Sunday was also the first day back at religious education after the break. I did a mini lesson on Epiphany with my third graders, and we did a game where one student hides a small paper clip (representing Baby Jesus) somewhere in the room while another student stands outside so he/she doesn’t see where it is hidden. Then the student outside comes back into the room and the other students give hints to help him/her find the paper clip by saying “The star is dim….getting brighter…VERY bright!” I got the game idea from online somewhere, and they enjoyed it! That’s a big win in my book, because I feel like I can easily start lecturing to those poor third graders.

Surprise birthday dinner for one of my best friends, Daliza.

I didn’t actually get any pictures, except for my food. Whoops.

IMG_3218

We went to The Cheesecake Factory, and I ordered the chicken, pear, blue cheese, and endive salad. It was delicious!

Afterwards, we tried finding a frozen yogurt place, but all of them were closed. So instead, we went to ShopRite and bought a carton of Yoplait peach froyo to share. Straight from the carton, baby.

First company rehearsal of 2014.

I have no pictures of this, but yesterday, it was back to Sunday brunch and a four hour rehearsal with our new choreographer. I missed dancing with my girls!

Seeing this:

A lovely lady pinned the Daily Moves and Grooves banner onto her “Favorite Blogs” board. Sometimes, I still can’t believe people actually read my blog. Thanks so much, Ms. Unruh! This put a huge smile on my face. And thank you, everyone who reads this little blog of mine 🙂

Those are the highlights! Of course, I loved the less exciting, but equally marvelous things that went on: avocado toast (twice!), watching Youtube videos, reading blogs, working out, and spending time with my family.

Hope you all have a great week!

So tell me:

Do you use space heaters?

Do/Did you like sledding?

Tell me three things you loved about this weekend!

Burger Noshing and Room Organizing {MIMM #17}

Good morning!

I hope you all had a splendid last weekend of December! My weekend was a lovely mix of relaxing and productive, which is the best kind of weekend in my opinion. It was marvelous!

MiMM

Check out Katie’s weekly partayyy!

The Relaxing

Sleeping in until nearly lunch time. Hey look, I’m a normal teenager! Before Christmas break, 9 AM would already make me feel like my half of the day had slipped away. So lame. I now realize that sleep is never a waste of my day. The only downside is that I’ve turned into a night owl (I’m typing this at 2 AM), and school is gonna be ROUGH.

Researching all things blogging. Ever since changing up the look of my blog on Saturday night, I’ve been reading up on html, wordpress.org, blog designers, and a bunch of things that help expand a blog. However, as much as I feel excited to jump into the whole blogging deal, I have to remember that I’m a) not even an adult yet, b) not in college yet, and c) not ready to make blogging a business of any sort yet. I love blogging for what it is, and I’m happy with where Daily Moves and Grooves is at right now. We can take things a step further later 🙂

Burgers. BareBurgers to be exact. It’s more of an upscale burger restaurant with some fancy meats and gourmet combinations. They use organic, locally-raised, humanely-raised, GMO-free EVERYTHING. The quality (and the receipt) totally put greasy fast food to shame. I tried the Roadhouse Burger (avocado, apple grilled onions, pepperjack, and smoked paprika mayo) with bison meat— my first time trying bison!

photo 3 photo 4

I didn’t get lockjaw.

My mom ordered ostrich, dad had elk, and Ben had wild boar. None of them tasted really different from beef, but we raved about them all nonetheless. I loved mine! It was insanely filling though, so half of it was saved for Sunday’s dinner.

We also ordered some obligatory sweet potato sides— sweet potato fries and sweet potato “croqs,” which were basically more airy hushpuppies stuffed with cheddar cheese. These also came with FIVE different dipping sauces. The curry ketchup was my favorite!

photo 2 photo 1

The menu told us how many calories everything had but….. guatever. It was all so darn delicious.

The Productive

A complete room organization project. The first one in eight years! I’ve lived in this house for eight years. 😉

I don’t spend that much time in my room, so the clutter never bothered me SO much, but I finally cracked and just did it last night. I cleared and stored the clutter, threw away unused things, wiped away the dust bunnies, and re-organized. It feels ten times better to be in my room now!

Here was probably the biggest mess hub:

(Note-My walls are pink because they were painted that way originally when we bought the house. I do not approve of the color. We’re just too lazy to change it.)

BEFORE:

AFTER:

DSC_7309

Haaaaalelujah. I threw out/recycled/stored about 50% of the things in my room. I also found out that I was a minor hoarder of rubber bracelets, stuffed seals, and stuffed penguins. And some hidden gems:

DSC_7302

It’s not real. But what the heck?

DSC_7298

….

Yeah.

Now the hard part will be keeping my room this nice. My innate tendency toward entropy is real.

I hope you all have a marvelous Monday!

So tell me:

How was your weekend?

What is the most unusual burger meat you’ve ever tried?

How often do you organize/de-clutter your room?
