Old-School Things That I Hope Never Die

Look what went down in our kitchen last night.

I used this recipe as a guide, which is different from the one I used last year. This one is more of a biscuit-topping-cobbler, while the one I made last year was more of a cake-like-cobbler.

I used a little too much fruit, because the cobble to fruit ratio was a little low for my liking. (I was seriously considering making another batch of the biscuit topping but decided not to be so greedy.) I also used lime zest instead of orange zest, and added ground nutmeg and ginger to the fruit, which made it somethin’ special. Dad and I enjoyed it a la mode of course.

Something about baking peach cobbler makes me feel like I should be wearing a 50s housewife dress and a white, lace-trimmed apron. That sounds so anti-feminist, but frankly, I think making something delicious by hand that brings a smile to someone’s face is anything BUT lame.

After baking fresh peach cobbler— a classic Southern dessert— I started thinking about some other old-school things that should never go out of style. For the record, this list does not include long-haired slick backs, white T-shirts, good girl faith, or tight little skirts.*

Old-School Things That I Hope Never Die

1. Sit-down dinners with family members.

Sitting down for dinner with family members is a privilege. I find that having dinner with loved ones not only encourages good conversation and slower eating, but it also helps foster greater gratitude for the food and people I have in my life.

2. Snail mail.

Seriously, there is no feeling like getting a letter addressed to you in the mail that is from a loved one and has nothing to do with bills, coupons, or local politicians.

During the summer I love taking the opportunity to find a couple pen pals and write back and forth a few times. It’s exciting receiving a letter and equally as exciting sending one, especially if he/she isn’t expecting it!

3. Late nights at the diner.

Diners seem to be more of an east coast thing if I’m not mistaken, but I love the casual, family-style atmosphere, as well as the comfort food (fries, milkshakes, pancakes, HIIIIII.)

Diners on rainy nights are quintessentially classic. Like, cue some Grease music, please.

4. Real books.

I know a lot of people would agree with me on this one. As much as I love reading blogs and I love the environment, you absolutely cannot replace the experience of reading a book with tangible, dog-eared pages and that glorious smell of…paper…when you flip through.

Although, I have issues taking care of my books, because I always tend to get them wet and wrinkly. The way I see it, the water damage adds character and vintage vibes to the book.

5. Ballroom dancing.

Secret sharing time! I used to take ballroom and latin dance lessons, and I would dance with my tall, skinny Russian instructor in shows (and in one competition).

So there’s that.

Anyway, amidst the grinding, twerking, you’re-a-jerk-ing, and pop-lock-and-dropping of this era, I like to think that ballroom dancing remains a respected art that displays romance in a classy manner. I think it would be a sad day if no men knew how to properly frame a woman for dancing (not the prom-style hands on hips, arms around neck thing).

Wait, have we already reached that day?

6. Sleepovers.

Not that I think this will go away anytime soon…for young girls at least.

Is it socially acceptable to have sleepovers with my girl friends when we’re out of college? (I could say “adult sleepover”, but that connotes something quite different.) Like, if/when we’re married and my husband is out of town? Can I invite my gals over for pajamas, nail painting, face masks, cookie baking, chick flicks, and TMI talk?

Imma do it.

Productive Weekend

Hello!

Productive weekends are almost as awesome as do-nothing weekends. Although, I’m still on summer break, so there’s no real differentiation between the weekend and weekdays…

Productivity is marvelous!

On Friday, I took an active rest day, but I still managed to tire myself out with errands, chores, and cooking. I just want to be a house mom, that’s really it. I feel like I could do those kinds of things all day, every day and be alright. I mean, I don’t have kids, so that’s a probably a major factor in why I’m so zealous about it at the present moment.

Some highlights:

I wasn’t feeling too civilized, so I just called it casual Friday.

Headstanding! I got the beginner version finally thanks to Erin @ The Almond Eater’s tips.

It took me a while to figure out that it’s a good idea to warm up your core before doing a headstand/handstand, so an 8 minute ab tabata did the trick beforehand.

Making Kylie’s peanut butter cookie banana chia seed pudding.

This is so good. And healthy! I even got an extra workout because I was too lazy to take out and clean the food processor to make oat flour, so I used this ancient, manual crusher-ma-bob.

I wouldn’t say it became oat flour, but more like oat bran. Oh well. Texture! Fiber! Digestion!

Ice cream and a long walk with Jeannine and Veronica at the local creamery (we missed you, Je’lyn!).

P.S. I had Cap’n Crunchberry ice cream and it was awesome.

We also had Indian food, compliments of Groupon (it’s back in action!). I ♥ the saucy richness of Indian food…and nan!

My cousins, aunt and uncle also arrived yesterday! They’re here for a couple days only, but I always love spending time with them.

Re-reading this post, it doesn’t seem like I was any more productive that usual, but I promise that I did more than make food and eat it. The rest of the weekend was dedicated to cleaning (I even volunteered to vacuum, what?) and college preparations.

Buying college books: Dad said it’s like the Mafia. All the book companies want is money (LOTS of it), but you can make deals with other sites and people to spend less. Thank God for Amazon.

Dorms: I’ve just started to think about how to decorate my dorm room, and I already give up. Let’s face it, my room is just not going to look like the coveted Pinterest dorm rooms.

Too much effort.

Color scheme? I’ve lived in a baby pink room for the past 10 years; color isn’t my main priority at this time in my life. The most I’m doing is making a photo collage on a rectangular poster board. Done and done.

Things I Learned Yesterday

Yep, it feels like summer.

I usually look around and realize how much I have to do, but yesterday I looked around and realized how much I DON’T have to do. In one sense, that was liberating, but in another sense, that made me anxious. I like to be productive (or at least feel like I’m being productive), so this threw me for a loop.

It was a relaxing day, but I did find some fun + not-as-fun things to keep me occupied. Idleness ain’t cool. So this is what I learned yesterday as I found things to do:

I’ve lost so much flexibility.

I did this 60 minute yoga video, and some stretches that used to feel awesome felt…not so awesome anymore. I mean, I still got a nice stretch, but man was it humbling! I guess it’s a gentle/painful reminder to keep stretching.

I can do a headstand {against a wall}! 

Then I try to get my toes off the wall and I’m down in three seconds, yay! But hey, at least I know my noggin can handle the weight.

My burpee wound is finally healed enough for me to not wear a bandage. 

It’s ugly and scary though.

I always thought there was a slight difference in flavor between the two, but nope! They taste exactly the same. Peaches just have the fuzz.

I can do a dead hang pull-up!

It has to be at the right time, and it sorta looks like I’m fighting to not fall off a cliff, but I finally got it!

I still don’t like to vacuum.

I vacuumed yesterday so I could be useful around the house. It was fine, but it’s still my least favorite chore. It’s really the mile-long cord that’s the biggest obstacle.

There are dragonflies outside my house that could be mistaken for mini dinosaurs.

What the heck.

June is over.

That’s not even possible. So many awesome things have happened this month, but it’s been such a whirlwind that I haven’t noticed that the calendar days keep flipping.

I have so much to read this summer!

Mostly books related to faith/meditation, but books nonetheless! I’m actually excited to read those kinds of books. I might throw some fiction in there for spice and everything nice (I’m usually more of a memoir person). The Rosie Project, Paper Towns (recommended by Jeannine!), and Hungry look interesting! Oh, and maybe I’ll finally finish Catching Fire… but chances are slim.
