Everyone Hates Goodbyes

I think I put on deodorant five times yesterday.

Walk outside ➔ sweat. Unpack things ➔ sweat. Laugh too hard at a friend’s joke ➔ sweat.

But that’s all okay, because Rachel arrived in Boston yesterday!!! Although I only have a little less than two days with her, we are making the most of this time together.

IMG_2674

the best breakfast I’ve eaten in Boston so far, thanks to the multigrain bagel I snagged from the Catholic Center 😀

When I picked her up from the airport, I ran up from behind to scare her as my greeting. She said, “Alison, you can’t make people scream in an airport!”

True. But I pride myself in my dramatic greetings.

We caught up all day while we took transit, ate food, and walked a lot. After checking out her new apartment for the year (where I will also be next semester), we headed to lunch at Mei Mei for the classic “Double Awesome” scallion pancake sandwich.

IMG_2684

double awesome = scallion pancake, two eggs, white cheddar cheese (LOTS of it), and pesto + spicy ketchup and maple ginger soy for dipping

Highly recommend.

We walked around the city while catching up — probably our favorite pastime!

IMG_2688

I forget how yellow I am until I see photos like this lol

After tons of walking and talking, it was already almost time for dinner. We commuted to Newton for dinner at one of our Boston food bucket list places, Johnny’s Luncheonette.

IMG_2691

I got the meatloaf dinner (half came home for a second meal, buh-bam), and Rachel got the huevos rancheros. My meatloaf was delicious!

IMG_2694

But the real star was the bucket list item— the crunchy french toast. We split an order for dessert and absolutely loved it! The crunch of the cereal added something special, and the french toast itself was very well-executed.

IMG_2692

Rachel and I noticed that our waiter was a little bit judge-y of our eating abilities. The main thing was that, after we finished the whole order of french toast, he said, “You guys HOUSED that,” before walking away with our empty dishes.

Yeah. We did. Thanks for pointing it out, sir. We ladies like to be told we’re houses for diner food.

He may not have meant any harm, but it was funny to us. WE EAT A LOT OKAY.

Back at the apartment, we hung out with friends for the rest of the night. Then the real goodbyes had to happen. All of us talked about how we hate goodbyes, partially because they’re so sad, and partially because they’re too sad that you don’t even know how to conduct yourself.

Sob?

10 minute hug?

Mini speech/ode to the other?

Just walk out the door?

I’ve come to like less dramatic goodbyes but with big hugs. Daliza and I still say, “See you later,” to one another, because we hate sappy goodbyes. The real sadness washes over a few days later when you realize: Oh, I’m ACTUALLY not going to see them.

I leave back for New York tonight, and it hurts my heart a little bit for sure, but I’ll see my family and home here in Boston soon.

So tell me:

How do you handle goodbyes?

Has a waiter/waitress ever commented on the amount you ate?

Do you like french toast?

Five Minute Friday #10: Personality + Exciting Announcement!

I definitely start a lot of my posts with small talk. I often like to talk about the weather, for example…

IMG_0354

…but can we just…I was in shorts and a T-shirt all day yesterday. And WHAT is that next to Sunday and Tuesday?

But all this small talk is really just procrastination for what I really want to say (I have not told any of my friends or family about this, so you know it’s BIG and SCARY):

I’m working on a building a startup fitness company!

Moves and grooves have gradually become a bigger part of my life in the past few months, so this idea has been growing in my noggin for a bit. I believe I am at a very healthy place, mentally and physically, so I feel comfortable and empowered to take this on. Also, since I’ve become a Fit University ambassador, I’ve just had this inexplicable drive to integrate all my knowledge about physical therapy and eating disorders/fitness obsession and apply it to a holistic, supportive environment. I don’t want to divulge too many details since it’s still in the works, but I’ll be sure to share as the process unfolds.

WOW. LIBERATION. EXCITEMENT. Thanks for listening. Business things. Who would have thought?

Anyway, my friends and I have been rollin’ out the Easter celebration this whole week, despite real life things like laundry and falling asleep in class school.

Rachel and I checked off another food bucket list place on Tuesday with Zinneken’s liege waffles for lunch dessert! Instead of going to the storefront, we stopped by the food truck that was closer to us. I cannot tell you how much this food truck has been torturing me with its aroma of sugar-coated waffles for the past month whenever I walked by.

Tuesday was the day.

so beautiful (Rachel AND the waffle)

IMG_0351

We bought our waffles, parked ourselves on a bench, and let all our fellow students watch us devour the crispiest, sweetest, most delightful waffles ever.

Other delicious foods from the d-hall this week:

IMG_0353

two eggs scrambled with veggies, drizzled drenched with sriracha + whole wheat pancake with almond butter and banana + glass o’ milk

IMG_0358

quinoa cake and roasted veggie bulgur + spinach salad with tofu, carrots, tuna, beets, couscous, olive oil, and balsamic

IMG_0359

banana cake + pumpkin bread

Joyous feasting for Easter? 😀

I’ve also had lot of amazing conversations with friends this week, which brings me to this week’s Five Minute Friday! This one’s all about personality:

link to the video!

*Note: After filming this, I reflected on my answer for abstainer vs. moderator, and I actually think I’m an abstainer when I’m more stressed, but I’m more of a moderator when things are going pretty smoothly. Is it cheating to say both?

Hope you all have a grand weekend! Also,

APRIL FOOLS!!!

I am NOT starting a fitness company. I have no plans to do so. Sorry. 😀

So tell me:

DID I FOOL YOU? Please say yes. I never fool anyone.

Do you think you’re an abstainer or a moderator?

Introvert or extravert?

Salt or light (if that’s applicable to you)?

Best April Fools story!

Weekend Confessions + Vlog with Rachel

weekend confessions

Confession #1: I miss blogging more often, and I’m sorry that I haven’t been posting very much lately!

Confession #2: I also don’t feel that guilty for not posting, because school is happenin’ and so is friend time. I love blogging, but it can be hard to choose screen time over a night out with friends, ya know?

Confession #3: I wore shorts and a tank top on November 5th in Boston, Massachusetts. HAHA. I was wearing my marshmallow coat three weeks ago. What are seasons?

merry-christmas-los-angeles-meme

like, MAYBE, who knows now?

Confession #4: Rachel and I decided to have best friend day on Saturday and made sure the whole world knew about it on Snapchat.

IMG_9046

Confession #5: We could not stop saying “mmm” and “WOW” and “I can’t even” while eating this sandwich from Cutty’s (on our food bucket list!).

IMG_9044

It’s called the “Roast Beef 1000” (slow-roasted beef, thousand island sauce, frizzled onions, and sharp cheddar on a brioche bun). Yeah.

We also both ordered the vegetable of the day, which was hot ‘n’ sour brussels sprouts. Also “mmmmm”-worthy.

Guy Fieri was there!

Confession #6: We were so inspired by the brussels sprouts from lunch that we bought two bags of brussels sprouts from the grocery store, roasted them in the communal kitchen after dinner, and ate a whole tray of them within 15 minutes of them coming out of the oven.

sort of based on Arman’s balsamic brussels

Confession #7: Before our brussels extravaganza, Rachel and I were workout buddies. Except that we didn’t work out together.

Processed with VSCOcam with b1 preset

We ran to the workout pad that I always go to, and while she continued running, I stopped and did six rounds of this workout until she ran back.

Confession #8: I’ve finished 5 large (32+ ounce) jars of peanut butter this semester. It’s fine.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

My sixth jar may or may not last until Thanksgiving. I’m erring on the side of not.

Confession #9: I put Sriracha on everything.

Soon I’ll be mixing it with peanut butter.

Confession #10: Rachel and I filmed a VLOG! You’ve seen a couple vlogs with Daliza, my best friend from home, so I thought it would be fun to film one with best friend who I met at college 🙂

This is a “best friend tag” vlog. Basically, how well do we know each other? Quirks? What’s annoying about the other? Who do we have a CRUSH ON!?

Here’s the link in case the embedded video isn’t working (and if you still want to watch it). In case my fellow bloggers want to play along with their BFF or significant other, here are the questions!

How and when did you two meet?

Who is your best friend’s hero?

If your best friend could go any place on earth, where would it be and why?

What is the name of your crush?

What is your best friend’s biggest fear?

If your best friend was deserted on an island, what three items would he/she want to have?

What part of your best friend’s body is his/her favorite?

What are two things about you that your best friend doesn’t know?

How would you describe your best friend’s ideal spouse?

What is a weird quirk about your best friend?

What are three things you would never fail to find in your best friend’s refrigerator?

What is your favorite memory together?

What is one thing about your best friend that annoys you?

Does your best friend have any nicknames?

What would your best friend do if he/she won the lottery?

Can you describe your best friend in one word?

What would your best friend say he/she admires most in you?

Sorry it’s kinda long. Just promise me you’ll watch Rachel’s face at 4:09.

She’s gonna kill me.

Hope you all have a fabulous week! Tell your good friends/family members that you love them.

So tell me:

What is one “confession” you have from the weekend?

Have you ever eaten a whole pan/pot of something in one sitting?

What is the best thing you’ve eaten recently?

If you were deserted on an island, which three items would you want to have?

Last Week Was Crazy

Meep.

I did not get to put up another post last week, but that’s the outcome I was sensing since I had a big psych test on Friday AND there were so many other fun things happening when I wasn’t studying. I’ll just get right into it, because the meat of this post just speaks for itself.

Best Friend Surprise

Someone very special decided to be awesome and sneaky on Tuesday…

I’m the most clueless doofus out there, but…Daliza was in Boston.

Shoutout to my roommate Jordan for helping Daliza make this crazy surprise happen! They went through this whole complicated process to get me to come out at the right time and place so that Daliza could surprise me. You don’t get to see it in this video, but I started crying. As I do. I was utterly shocked and ecstatic that Daliza was here at Boston University to visit me!

She’s the bomb. Jordan’s the bomb. God blessed me with some rockstar friends, eh?

Ben Turns 21

After chillin’ with my Mexican sister from another mister for a few precious hours before she headed back to NY (yes, she came all the way up to Boston just for a day— dedication ♥), I joined my family in the evening for dinner to celebrate bro-Ben’s 21st! #boozeTues

picstitch copy

We went to an upscale Southern restaurant called Hungry Mother, and it was wonderfully rich and comforting. It’s awesome that they use local ingredients and change up their menu every day too! They have a prix fixe menu option, so we all chose that (mom and I shared) and essentially ordered everything on the petite menu to share.

picstitch-2

Course 1: chicken-fried veal sweetbreads // escargot with biscuit topping // sunchoke parsnip soup

picstitch-3

Course 2: charcuterie board // oysters rockefeller // beet and baby scallop salad

picstitch-4

Course 3: wild catfish with cornbread puree and brussels sprouts // squab with farroto // rabbit with rabbit andouille sausage and gold rice grits

picstitch-5

Course 3: cheese plate // yogurt cheesecake with cranberry caramel and poached apple // chocolate truffle tart with buttermilk ice cream // complimentary cookies of some sort

All the plates were on the small side, so it was a perfect tasting evening. If the plates were any bigger, I might have ended up blowing up from water retention. That food was pretty heavy on the salt and fat (as expected from a Southern-inspired restaurant), but it was delicious for sure! My favorites were the beet and scallop salad and the yogurt cheesecake.

Hope you had a marvelous birthday, bro! I can’t believe you can consume alcohol legally now. We were drinking milk from sippy cups, like, yesterday?

School.

Tests, labs, essays, tour guide training, REGISTRATION FOR CLASSES.

It’s like the Hunger Games trying to register for classes. You have to strategize, have a backup plan, prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Everyone wants the same classes as you, so you have to pounce on that ish.

Anyway, it wasn’t too bad (except for 6-8 pm bio lab, ew). Hopefully everything works out next semester!

My friends and I also had tour guide training all day on Saturday, which was kind of draining (especially since we had to walk outside for two hours in the frigid air that cut through my soul), but I’m totally looking forward to giving tours next semester! If any of you high schoolers are thinking about Boston University….!!!

More Birthdays (and sweets)

Besides celebrating bro-Ben’s birthday, I also joined in the celebration of my friend Christina’s birthday on Thursday!

picstitch copy 2

She’s 19 and fabulous (and she has a killer opera voice). Our friend Cori made a huge batch of eggless cookie dough, which we all very much appreciated. Then I went to a Students for Life club meeting, where there was pumpkin and NY cheesecake made by the wonderful Cecilia.

My friends are going to give me diabetes.

We also celebrated friend-Ben’s birthday on Saturday! A bunch of us watched him and two other friends do the legendary Rhett’s challenge, which is trying to eat 8 GIANT scoops of ice cream, a triple bacon cheeseburger, a large side of fries, and a large root beer within 30 minutes.

My friends are going to vicariously give me diabetes.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

They did not complete the challenge, but that’s really okay. It was actually difficult to watch them try to down that food. Daily Moves and Grooves does not condone these kinds of challenges.

Cold Weather

It’s finally upon us, which means it’s time to break out the mom jacket.

10608434_827496760606816_455527037528732541_o

Would you believe me if I said I’ve had this jacket since 6th grade? It fits a lot better now.

10688215_827498197273339_4418361975135895038_o

Hi, Connor and Louis!

It’s not even that cold yet for Boston standards. When we’re back here in February, I might have to risk looking like a robber by walking around in a ski mask so my face doesn’t fall off.

And that’s IT, friends! 8 more days until Thanksgiving break. I can almost taste it.

I hope you all have a marvelous Monday!

MiMM

Linking up with Katie!

So tell me:

Two exciting things that happened to you last week!

Do you like Southern cuisine?

Is it freezing where you live?

Favorites Vlog with Daliza

Good morning!

My cousins left early this morning, so now it’s just Daliza, my parents, and me in Florida for now. I’m gonna miss those cuties! We had a laid-back day yesterday— the dads hit the golf course while the rest of us hit the outlet mall.

DSC_0005

Breakfast was a peach, peanut butter, banana, yogurt smoothie + toast with sunflower seed butter

Perfect fuel for walking all over the mall 😉

However, I think filming and editing the video you are about to watch was the best part of yesterday. Daliza and I found so many little things in it that made us laugh hysterically. I thought I was gonna pee my pants, I was laughing so hard.

We’re definitely the only ones that think it’s so funny.

I had seen several bloggers (like Julianna and Amanda and Brittany) do this favorites tag in a blog post, but I decided to do it in a video with Daliza, whom you’ve seen a lot of on the blog recently!

So here goes nothing:

The link in case you can’t see the video here: http://youtu.be/w7KPf7OMnTs

Notes:

*Edited by the amazing Daliza.

*Daliza’s not blind.

*Note the costume change.

*4:07 I am a donkey.

*Sweaters and BOOTS at 6:05

*#IGuessSo

*Daliza should make a blog called “50 Shades of Laughs”

We hope you enjoyed learning a little more about us! And perhaps laughing at us.

I leave you with a photo my uncle took last night:

“From the rising of the sun to its setting The name of the LORD is to be praised.” — Psalm 113:3

So tell me:

Some of your favorites!

Do you like Daliza’s sunglasses?

Should she start a blog?!
