Virtual Breakfast Date {A Fruitful Week}

“The devil’s beating his wife” right now!

^^^Has anyone used/heard of this expression before? Apparently it’s a Southern regional way of saying that it’s raining while the sun is still shining. I’m not from the South, but it’s fun to say and freak people out up here in the Northeast.

I was meaning to blog earlier this week, but activities and schoolwork caught up to me, blah blah, normal excuses. But here I am with my breakfast, ready to share a late virtual breakfast date with you.

virtual breakfast date

…you would see that I’m eating a classic “me” breakfast.

…I would tell you that I ate the same thing earlier this week.

except with Sriracha! ♥

…I would tell you that this week has been fruitful. Firstly, it has been fruitful in a very literal sense, since I went apple picking with the Catholic Center on Columbus Day.

…I would tell you that there are few things better than eating fresh apples on a beautiful sunny day with the most loving friends.

…I would tell you that the apple cider donuts (WITH cinnamon sugar) might be one of my favorite seasonal treats ever.

…I would tell you that I need to learn to keep my mouth closed in photos.

…I would tell you that we all donated some of our apples to baking apple crisps for the Boston Rescue Mission! Fruitful apple picking in a more profound sense, am I right?

…I would tell you that I’ve battled some tough inner demons this week. However, talking with my dearest friends and my spiritual director has been very fruitful. There have been many tears, but “tears are a gift,” as my friend Lauren says.

Thank you, dear friends.

…I would tell you that it has been lovely getting to move and groove outdoors this week.

…I would tell you that there’s some funky debris in my milk cup right now and I’m a little concerned.

…I would tell you that there have been some good eats this week!

…I would tell you that I have a lot of studying to do this weekend, but I’m also looking forward to some a cappella shows tomorrow!

…I would tell you that you’re awesome.

…I would ask you to tell me:

What do you call it when it’s raining and the sun is still shining (if you even have a term)?

Have you ever gone apple picking?

How has your week been fruitful?

What’s up this weekend?

I Should Be Embarrassed About These Things…

…But I’m not.

I’ll get to the embarrassing things in a second. Firstly, Happy Columbus Day to my fellow Americans! If you have the day off, I hope it is relaxing and filled with good people. If you’re not American or you do not have the day off, I hope it is filled with productivity and good people.

I actually have a 2.5 hour Holocaust lecture tonight because my professor took a couple days off for high Jewish holidays these past couple weeks, so we’re catching up tonight. The first half of today will involve apple picking though! I even bought a flannel just for the occasion.

Anyway, let’s catch up by sharing some embarrassing antics and moments! That’s one of the best ways to catch up, in my opinion. Here’s my end of the conversation:

I should be embarrassed that I still don’t really know how to get around downtown Boston. Luckily, I have friends who do. “Independent” is what I call myself.

shopping with my oh so beautiful and talented friend, Adrienne

I should be embarrassed that I trip on the sidewalk at least twice a day, despite wearing sneakers 90% of the time. I have a routine: trip ➔ nearly faceplant ➔ say in my head, “that didn’t happen” ➔ avoid eye contact with all other pedestrians ➔ move on.

Processed with VSCOcam with b5 preset

I should be embarrassed that I still want to take a photo of my lab partner and our matching breakfasts, even though I already did the exact same thing last weekBut c’mon, how cute?

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

awkward handling of tea bag

I should be embarrassed that I have completely finished three Costco-sizes jars of peanut butter within two months. To be honest, I am slightly embarrassed, or maybe just dumbfounded. I don’t know how it goes so darn quickly! I’ve got talent.

I should be embarrassed that I can only hold my attention for two pages at a time when reading my Holocaust textbook. According to Rachel, I would have been a much better and faster reader if I read Harry Potter when I was younger. My human physiology textbook, on the other hand, I could read all day!

I should be embarrassed that I spent $30 on dinner on Saturday night. I went out to dinner with some friends at a restaurant called The Barking Crab (does that not sound like it’s from a comedy show?), which had the ambiance of a dive but the prices of a Ritz restaurant. Rachel and I shared the salmon and scallops, which were both amazing, but my wallet felt a little betrayed.

I should be embarrassed that I take a photo of this view every single time I work out outdoors. But it’s just so pretty!

I should be embarrassed that I nearly cried listening to this song while studying. But there was a dude sitting across from me, so I couldn’t let my guard down.

Thanks for introducing me to Sleeping At Last, Adrienne. I’m OBSESSED.

I should be embarrassed that I eat Raisin Bran. Just kidding, I shouldn’t be. Sugar-coated raisins for life.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

I should be embarrassed that I was actually blogging while “hanging out with my friends”. But they were playing video games.

Men.

That’s all from me today! I hope you all find the humor in your embarrassing moments this week ♥︎

So tell me:

I should be embarrassed that ____, but ______.

Thoughts on raisins?

What was the last song that made you cry? I actually love listening to beautiful songs that make me cry.

What are you doing today?

Virtual Breakfast Date

Good morning, friends!

I hope you’ve all had a joyful if not restful weekend! Happy belated Thanksgiving to my Canadian homies!

I did not get to type up a post all weekend, so I thought it would be nice to catch up with you all over breakfast. A virtual breakfast date instead of a virtual coffee date because oatmeal >>> coffee. Just because it has peanut butter.

This is what I’m eating to break the fast!

Oatmeal + vanilla protein powder + cinnamon + banana + peanut butter (+ some roasted salted almonds!)

If we were having breakfast together this morning…

1) I would tell you that I went hiking in the rain with the Catholic Women’s group on Saturday! It was wonderful in every way except for the fact that it was raining and I did not bring a raincoat with me to college. What was I even thinking not bringing a raincoat to Boston? Brain fart at its finest. Luckily the rain was not torrential, so us sweatshirt folks escaped being dripping wet and were instead just soaking wet. 😀

I haven’t gotten pneumonia yet, dad!

2) I would tell you that some of the best times I had this weekend with my friends included just chilling out, talking about life, baking and eating banana bread, watching Grease, and playing the terrible yet hilarious game Cards Against Humanity.

Baking some BOMB banana bread with Cori!

I’ve eaten the equivalent of about 1/2 of a whole loaf this weekend.

3) I would tell you that the majority of my dorm tissue consumption goes towards killing fruit flies. I blame myself for leaving so many bananas and apples on my desk, but dang it, there are two more fruit flies for every one I kill. I’ve finally come to the genius realization that I should put my fruit in the fridge and that I should not throw out any pieces of banana/peel in the trash can in my room. I go to college— I can figure out those kinds of things now. 😉

4) I would tell you that I went apple picking for the first time ever yesterday! I don’t know how I’ve lived in New York for 10 years and not gone apple picking, but the time finally came, and it was a blast!

picstitch picstitch-2 copy

I failed by not wearing flannel, but my friends did a good job of reppin’ the plaid. We got a ton of apples, climbed trees (and did not fall out), and ate the heaven-sent cinnamon sugar cider donuts.

picstitch-3

I swear I could have finished all six of those babies, but I restrained myself to two so that I could eat real food for lunch later. But man, those donuts are what dreams are made of.

5) I would tell you that apples fresh from the tree are also the epitome of fall bliss. My workout buddy Albert exemplifies that.

6) I would tell you that yesterday could have been National Apple Picking Day instead of Columbus Day because EVERYONE EVERYWHERE went apple picking! It also could have been brussels-sprouts-for-dinner day as I saw so many people posting on Instagram that they were making my favorite vegetable for dinner last night. I was jealous.

7) I would tell you that I gotta go to my psych lecture NOW!

Have a lovely day, folks!

So tell me:

Have you ever gone apple picking?

What did you do this weekend?

What’s your favorite fall produce?

R & R {MIMM #6}

There’s a bug goin’ around! My mom was sick last week, and now my brother and I are feeling a little bit under the weather. A lot of my dance friends have also been sick, and our contact through dancing probably isn’t helping the rest of us. Luckily, this weekend I’ve been blessed with a good deal of rest and relaxation compared to last weekend. A little R & R to recharge for the week is totally cool with me. 🙂 So here’s to another Marvelous Monday, thanks to the lovely Katie!

MiMM

Marvelous is…

A great workout on Friday. After 10 minutes each on the elliptical and treadmill, I did a strength and cardio circuit workout (I’ll share it soon!) and finished with a 1000m row. I never use the rowing machine normally so I did NOT know how much I would feel it in my glutes! Of course, my shoulders were dying too.

Oh and remember when I thought I was super speedy on the treadmill? Well I am now fully convinced that that particular treadmill is slower than all the others while still showing the same speed on the monitor. Dangit. I’ve gone on other treadmills since then, and I’ve been running in the 7’s, but when I went on that treadmill again on Friday, I was running in the 8’s comfortably and I wasn’t necessarily feeling especially spunky that day. Ohhh well. I’m just surprised that I’ve started running more at all!

Marvelous is…

My first pumpkin oats of the season! And my first pumpkin anything of the season for that matter.

DSC_6073

To be honest, I don’t really taste that much of a difference between pumpkin oats and my usual banana oats. Maybe it’s because I add banana in addition to the pumpkin. Or maybe I just need to add more pumpkin. Or maybe I’m just adding the pumpkin to be a typical blogger ;). Whichever the reason, ’twas an absolutely delicious and comforting way to start my Saturday!

Marvelous is…

Hanging out with some company girls on Saturday night! Some of the girls went apple picking and then Pam invited us over to her house to hang out and eat pizza. I didn’t get to go apple picking, but I still really want to go sometime soon! It’s on my imaginary fall bucket list.

Playin’ some Rock Band.

Marvelous is…

Kiwi! Packing in the vitamin C to fight this bug. Plus, isn’t it just so pretty?!

Marvelous is…

The most aromatic and soothing homemade ginger, mint, honey, lime tea.

photo 5

I really wish I could bring the scent of this tea with me everywhere.

Those are the highlights of my weekend! As you can tell, it wasn’t super exciting, but I definitely appreciated the down time. Hope you have a great week!

So tell me: How was your weekend? What are some pumpkin things you’re eating? Do you like kiwi?

Sugar Crushed

Not in Candy Crush.

I’m only on level 33 and I’m already stuck. I’m too lazy to actually strategize in that game.

feel sugar crushed because of all the desserts I’ve been eating these past few days. They definitely bit me in the butt during my workout this morning. I was just lacking energy and my muscles fatigued faster than usual. I’ve never truly realized the effects of junk foods versus high-quality fuel during my workouts until I started eating more nutritious foods and increasing exercise in this past year. Nutritious food really does make a difference, kids!

I’m still thankful I squeezed in a decent workout at the hotel fitness center though. I started with 10 minutes on the stair stepper and then a 10 minute jog/run on the treadmill (woo, I ran again!). Then I started Jess’s Travel WOD (thought it was fitting).

Image

That’s when I started to feel my energy drag. Instead of 5 rounds, I did 3 and took longer breaks than I would have liked. I modified to knee pushups for the second two rounds, but used a 25 lb. dumbbell for the squats. Even after three rounds, I was shaking like a leaf! Ohh well. Ya win some, ya lose some. It was a humbling experience.

I was going to do ab work, but then my stomach said, “Ha. I think not.” Too much water glugged right before. Sooo I did a plank instead.

We’re back to my cousin’s house for the day! They were kind enough to host us for another delicious midday meal.

Turkey cheese burger, bean salad, tortellini, greens, and lots of fruit

Then the girls went to get hair cuts! We basically had the salon to ourselves with my aunt’s favorite stylist, Andre. He’s awesome! I got a little more layers and about a half-inch off. Nothing dramatic. Ben didn’t even notice the new ‘do. Expected.

DSC_5593 DSC_5594 DSC_5600 DSC_5613 DSC_5616 DSC_5622 DSC_5623 DSC_5626

Everyone’s lookin’ goooood! Thanks, Andre!

We also had some fun at a playground nearby. Oh to be a kid again… No comments about my 12-year-old appearance, thank you. 😀 But I decided to test some upper body strength racing up the poles against these two monkeys:

DSC_5591

Blisters–long time no see!

They also picked some apples from a random apple tree. They’re all still smiling, so seems like they were safe to eat (after washing of course).

DSC_5617 DSC_5620

I think I’m going to go jump on my cousin’s trampoline now. Then it’s dinnah time! Kabobs are on the menu!

So tell me: Do you notice the effect of too many desserts on your workouts? Any new ‘dos recently? What’s for dinner?!
