Two trips down, one to go!
Not that I’m counting down vacations. St. Louis (for cousin’s Baptism) and Canada (to visit relatives) were a blast, and our last family trip is to Seattle (for a wedding) starts today. Then it’s the countdown to move-in day back in Boston!
Our last day in Canada had some ups and downs, but mostly ups. If you follow me on Instagram or Snapchat, you probably already know that I’ve exhausted the fact joke that I’ve been in ninja training, but I’m about to push it to the limit with this post.
A Day in the Life of a Ninja (Monday)
7:00 AM— Wake up and go to the bathroom. Check emails, comments, and social media.
8:00 AM— Go back to sleep, because ninjas need rest to be on their game.
9:00 AM— Wake up again, brush teeth, etc. Eat breakfast, which is oatmeal a la microwave, because time is of the essence for ninjas (and I didn’t want to burn the bottom of my aunt’s pot like I did on Sunday morning, woo).
quick oats, unflavored protein powder, cinnamon, banana, maple syrup, milk, and almond butter
10:00 AM— Change into ninja clothes (workout capris and top).
10:15 AM— Hang out with my cousin, Amy. Get my mind blown by hexaflexagons (<— seriously the coolest thing ever) and get my butt kicked in Super Smash Bros (virtual ninja training).
she’s trying to create a character that looks like me, and the hair is pretty darn accurate
1:00 PM— Go to lunch at a tea house with Amy and her dad, because ninjas obviously like Asian food.
delicious noodles, short ribs, chicken, soup dumplings, beef tendon wraps, and mango yogurt juice
2:30 PM— Digest at home and get ready for bouldering (aka ninja training for scaling mountains and buildings).
3:30 PM— Start bouldering! {I used to rock climb regularly when I was in fourth and fifth grade, so the smell of the gym was familiar and nostalgic. I missed it!} This was an absolute blast. We were all about focus and discipline during our training.
my cousin and uncle are SO STRONG
5:45 PM— After burning out our hands, arms, and upper backs, we realize that we’re late for our dinner appointments. They drop me off to meet my dad.
6:45 PM—Dad and I arrive at my other aunt and uncle’s house and go to a pub for dinner from there. My stomach is hurting a little bit… Figure that I’m just hungry from all the climbing.
7:00 PM— Sit down to menus and some fun 70s music bingo. Try a sip of my dad’s beer because that’s legal for me in Canada.
no idea what I’m doing
7:20 PM— Dig into my fish tacos! My aunt also shares one of her wings with me.
7:50 PM— After finishing two of my tacos and sharing the third, we continue playing music bingo until my aunt wins a round! But then I totally kill the vibe when my stomach pains become semi-excruciating. Take a tablet from my aunt that’s supposed to absorb gas in your stomach. Go to the bathroom just in case.
8:00 PM— Aunt decides to take me back to her house to rest a little. Every step hurts my stomach! Aunt kindly nurses me with some tonic water and her comfy couch. Ninjas are not invincible.
8:30 PM— After lying down for a bit, stomach pain dissipates dramatically. Like, 100 to 0, real quick. We concluded that it was a heck of a lot of gas in my stomach for whatever reason (my stomach looked like a balloon, but I didn’t feel super full or anything). Thanks, Aunt Judy!!!
9:00 PM— Head back to cousin’s house, where we’re staying. Shower up.
9:30 PM— Practice throwing knives with the family, because ninjas. (Promise we’re not actually plotting to kill anyone. This is purely for fun…but that doesn’t sound much better, does it?)
10:20 PM— Practice handstands. Evidently, my stomach pains were virtually nonexistent at this point, thanks be to God.
11:00 PM— Sleep!

And yesterday we drove 9 hours back down to New York, where we did the whole unpack, laundry, repack deal. Here are some eats from our road trip!
McDonald’s Asian grilled chicken salad (not too shabby!)
lots of peanut butter in the car
Bareburger for dinner: pickles and slaw to share // “blue elk” burger
finished off the day with some vanilla bean ice cream + cinnamon and nutmeg (tastes like eggnog!)
Catch ya on the other side of the country! Hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday 🙂
So tell me:
Have you ever gone rock climbing or bouldering? I rekindled my love for it on Monday. My shoulders and forearms the next day though… not so much.
Have you ever had extreme stomach pains due to gas? Doesn’t that sound sexy.
Have you ever done a sport/activity that seems scary to others? Like shooting or archery?
If you’ve ever been to Seattle or Portland, what should we do there?
I haven’t been bouldering, but it looks REALLY fun! I’m sorry you had stomach pains. 😦 That always puts a damper on spending time with family.
I have been to Portland and Seattle, but I didn’t do much in Portland. In Seattle, we went to Pike Place Market. That’s really beautiful and so unique.
We just went to Pike Place Market yesterday, and I love it! Such a cool place. The fish market was a fun atmosphere!
Those fish tacos look amazing *.*
I’ve never had any before, but recently I’ve been thinking of making some/going out and trying them. We’ll see if I can find any good recipes.
And I think I went rock climbing once. It was years ago, so I barely remember it, but I remember feeling really accomplished when I made it to the top lol

Ah you need to have fish tacos sometime in your life!
I seriously do not understand as to why people do not ‘get’ the concept that we are ninjas. I have spent wayyyy too much of my life trying to convey that to people but they are just too blind to see the reality I suppose ;).
I hear ya with the stomach pain girl- I get that super sexy gassy ‘I-can’t-do-anything’ feeling occasionally, and while it SUCKS, I know that all I need to do to feel relived is *belt out singing* LET IT GOOOO, LET IT GOOO.
Anyways, I used to rock climb a lot when I was in 4th/5th grade too and it was SO much fun. I hope I can go to the indoor place and try it again soon :).
HAHA Oh my goodness, same. They won’t see it coming when we whip out our ninja skills.
And Elsa definitely had it right 😉
I haven’t been rock climbing, but my younger brother has, and he loved it. I don’t think I would, since one of my biggest fears is insecure heights. Lol, I’ve totally had PAIN because of gas. It isn’t quite regular, but is for sure not a novelty to me. 😀 I just had a particularly painful bout on Saturday. TMI? We can talk about this kind of stuff, right? 😉 Ironically, I live like 45 -60 minutes out of Seattle, and I am almost completely clueless about fun stuff to do there. I mean there’s the Space Needle, right ($$$), and the Pacific Science Center which I have practically memorized because we used to get a steep discount from my dad’s job, so we went there kind of a lot. But it’s not exactly what I would consider fun… As for Portland, I love their farmers market, but that is probably because I’m used to our lame one we have locally, and we went to the Portland one with my cousins (<3), so positive associations. Also food trucks, but what I said about the farmers market also applies to the food trucks. I don't know how far from Portland you are willing to travel, but we hiked Multnomah Falls with my cousins, and it was gorgeous!
My bro and I just passed through the Space Needle/Pacific Science Center area yesterday—I liked it! The Seattle Center was my favorite.
Oh right! I always forget about the Seattle Center! I think it’s fairly new, so I guess I can blame it on that… 😉 I’ve only been there once and it was for a bathroom break, but it looked like it would be fun to explore!
‘Obviously ninjas eat Asian food’😂😂😂
Lol
I have never done any of those things and I’m seriously having FOMO (that’s the first time I ever used that term…I hope I did it right 😜)
Have another safe and fun trip!!!! Love you girl!!!
Thanks, Katie! Haha I think you could use FOMO that way…why not? 😉
You are my favorite ninja 😉
Have you ever gone rock climbing or bouldering? Nope, but there was a rock climbing wall at my school that I tried a couple times. Short legs + rock climbing in gym = no bueno.
Have you ever had extreme stomach pains due to gas? Yes! They are the worst.
Have you ever done a sport/activity that seems scary to others? I was a cheerleader for awhile. I was the flyer so I would be the one tossed in the air. Some people have thought that was a scary thing, but I really enjoyed it!
Have fun on the rest of your trip, Alison! You are a busy little ninja 🙂
I rock climbed with my family when I was in elementary school, and I wasn’t that great because I wasn’t tall or strong enough..haha!
Oh my goodness, being a flyer totally seems scary— I have a lot of friends who are flyers, and I am in awe of them.
This cracked me up – except for the stomach pains, ouch!!! Glad they went away though after a while. I actually have only been to Seattle for a wedding as well, but it was such a beautiful city. I don’t really have many suggestions since pretty much all we did was wedding stuff, but obviously check out the Pike Place market! Have fun ninja.
Thanks, Hayley! We went to Pike Place Market yesterday, and it was a blast. Such a fun atmosphere.
Seriously, I questioned much of your antics via snapchat. Poor gassy Alison. Now I’m ruling ninja off my list of future jobs.
It’s not an occupation for everyone.
Not due to gas but I do get pains occasionally due to adult colic… Not nice! Lying down really helps though! Get it a lot less now I have gone mostly paleo.
Sport/ activity that’s scary to others = crossfit! So many of my friends are petrified by what david and I do!
I have been eating a lot more grease and sugar lately than normal, so I think that may have something to do with it!
CrossFit definitely looks scary, especially with the olympic lifting…but pretty BA nevertheless!
I came home a little early from a vacation with my dad due to intense stomach pain just like that! We had no idea what was going on. When I came home and went to the ER, they X-rayed me and you could see little bubbles of gas filling my entire stomach. It’s happened occasionally since, but never quite as bad, thankfully!
I love rock-climbing and haven’t been in ages. It’s so fun. Have a lovely time in Seattle!
Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that those pesky gas pains interrupted your vacation! That’s a real bummer. We’re fortunate that it’s just gas though..
sorry to hear about the stomach pain but glad that it has since improved!! i hate it when that happens, i honestly would take a headache over a stomachache any day of the week.
all the eats look delicious regardless! 🙂
Stomach pains really do put you out of commission if they’re bad enough. Then again, same with headaches!
Aaaah!! Bouldering looks like loads of fun! So jealous. I’ve wall climbed a few times and really enjoyed it. Hopefully I can get back into it soon!
When you’re in Seattle, Pike Place is a must. Definitely try try Piroshky Piroshky Bakery, Beecher’s Cheese and Ellenos yogurt. Wherever you go though, enjoy!
We passed by both of those places, but we were too full to eat there by the time we arrived! The Ellenos yogurt looked especially amazing! Next time hopefully 🙂
I kind of have had problems periodically with gas, bloating, etc. so I know *exactly* the pain you are talking about. And your 100-0 description was perfect…gotta love Gas-X! 🙂
Loved all your food pictures…I love eating vicariously! 😛 I am so not a sports person…if I am attempting a sport, odds are it’s easy and uncomplicated, and something everyone else had been doing since elementary school. 🙂 I have not every been rock climbing, but my brother has, and loved it. Part of me wants to try it sometime, but I don’t think I’d be strong enough.
I live near Seattle!! *claps hands excitedly* I know, I know what you can do: a lunch meet-up!! 😛 As for more common tourist attractions, I actually don’t have much experience *because* I live here all the time. 😉 We once took a staycation when I was little and it was super-fun…I remember especially loving the Museum of History and Industry and the Seattle Underground Tour as a kid, but I was like 6, so I’m not sure how it is now. We were supposed to do another staycation this year, but we haven’t gotten around to it yet. :S Please let us know if you find/do anything fun in Seattle…I’ll suggest it to the rest of the fam for us to go see! As for Portland, I have a bit more experience there, because I have cousins in Vancouver. Being a food-centric person, I had an absolute BLAST going to the Rose City Food Truck lot. It’s a huge parking lot basically, where a bunch of different food trucks gather to serve the hungry crowds. There’s so many choices, and you pretty much can’t go wrong. Also, everyone says you must go to Voodoo Donuts, though I’ve never been, ’cause the lines were too long + donuts not really being my thing. But I’d definitely recommend seeing how the lines are if you’re in town and like donuts. They serve some interesting ones! Have fun!
Wow, thank you for all the suggestions, Allie! We certainly took advantage of the food trucks in Portland, but we went to Blue Star Donuts instead of Voodoo. And Seattle has been fun too! I wish we could spend more time here so I could meet you!
I love the ninja theme to this post, haha! You are seriously so creative! I’m pretty jealous of all the awesome trips you’ve been on/are going on. Traveling is just amazing for so many reasons!
This is more traveling than I’ve done in the past couple of years I think! Lots of family events happening all at once, but it has been a great adventure for sure 🙂
