Heavy Foods, Light Hearts

Where there are friends, there is food. Where there is food, there are friends.

My special guest that visited this weekend (who I mentioned on Friday) was my BU BFF, Rachel!

She made a spontaneous trip down to New York to hang out and have some girl time. Needless to say, I brought her to places with lots of food, and I brought lots of food to her face.

Remember when I first opened that mega jar of peanut butter that I received from MyProtein? That was July 7th.

I finished it on July 31st, putting it to rest the right way—overnight oats in a jar (with maybe 3 tablespoons of peanut butter left inside, sorry not sorry).

Rachel arrived at night, and we enjoyed a Fish Friday meal of cajun flounder, barley, black bean corn salad, and green beans.

Followed by dessert of ice cream, scones, and a looooong talk on the couch. #deepthoughts

Late night chats means late wake up, but not too late to make some banana waffles for breakfast!

Rachel and I went to a super posh and ritzy town in Connecticut, where ladies were wearing sundresses and heels, Lululemon was next to Vineyard Vines, and GEOFFREY ZAKARIAN WAS TWO FEET AWAY FROM ME.

*Geoffrey Zakarian in an off-white suit walks towards us*

Me: Oh my gosh, it’s Geoffrey Zakarian!!!

Rachel: What?

*Geoffrey definitely hears me but promptly pretends to see something across the street and walks in that direction with his two posse dudes*

Me: He’s a famous Food Network star. Oh my gosh, what do I do?

Rachel: Alison…it’s okay. He’s walking away.

Me: Wait, he’s getting farther. But I want to take a picture with him. Oh my gosh. He’s so famous.

He looked exactly like this!!!

Apparently he’s opening a restaurant on the street we were on, so he must have been doing business for that. I was only slightly, extremely bummed that I didn’t have the courage to run across the street to take a selfie with him, but at least I spared myself from being that fan.

Anyway, after coming home and doing some yoga that was a little more intense than expected for both of us, we went to Mass and dinner at our favorite Italian restaurant.

Rachel and I split the gnocchi and veal sorrentino. We were in rich, Italian, tomato, tom-ah-toe, mozzarella heaven.

Later that night we grabbed some delicious ice cream (<— redundant, I know) with Michael. Apple pie ice cream for meeeee.

We walked, talked, watched old videos of my chipmunk-voice days, and some Iliza Shlesinger comedy before calling it a [very late] night.

I woke up past 10 AM, which makes me kinda sad, but hey, it’s a summer weekend.

We had a slow morning of talking and stretching before going to a local Indian festival for food cultural immersion.

Our weekend ended with pork chops and chicken, the movie Chef, time with Daliza, and more girl talk.

Needless to say, this weekend was filled with lots of rich, heavy foods that made me want to roll into bed right after eating them. But I loved every bite, and most importantly, I loved every moment with my homegirl, Rachel. It was an awesome weekend, and I’m sad that she has to go back to Boston today… Less than a month before we actually move in together for schooooooool.

(Minus the missed opportunity to take a pic with IRON CHEF Geoffrey Zakarian.)

Hope you all have beautiful Monday!

So tell me:

Did you have any yummy rich foods this weekend?

Have you ever spotted a celebrity in public?

Indian or Italian food?

  1. Looks like you had a great weekend Alison – that cajun fish looked *insane*..drool…I’m not a huge indian fan (even though my grandparents are from Mauritius, an Indian island!) and I love Mediterranean cuisine, so i’d probably vote Italian 😉 This weekend I helped my mum cook a roast beef joint which was very rich. I totally gorged out but it was so worth it!
Hope you have a fabulous week!

  2. I love your style of writing. It’s just so… you. I love it, I really do. 🙂
Anyhow… I didn’t have any rich food over the weekend, and unfortunately, I’ve never seen a celebrity in public. However, even if I did, I would never have the guts to say hello.
As for Indian or Italian, I’d choose real, authentic Italian food over Indian any day. I’m not a HUGE fan of Americanized Italian food, but I love the real stuff you get over in Italy!

  3. Looks like you had an amazing weekend! I adore both Italian and Indian food, but I just made (delicious) lasagna last night, so at the moment that sounds more appealing 🙂

  4. Are you asking me to play favourites with different cuisines?! Gasp! 😛 I’d have to go with Italian over Indian, but Mexican will always and forever hold the #1 spot in my heart… probably because of salsa and guacamole. I actually went to a food festival here this weekend, but there wasn’t a lot I could eat because of my allergies. It was still fun to go and soak up the atmosphere, though!

  5. Woahhhhh you definitely had a weekend of AMAZING eats! From oatmeal to gelato and Indian food… talk about ‘traveling the world’! Fangirling over Zakarian as well- I have seen wayyyy too many food network shows! Bobby, Giada, Alton, and Zairian rule that sphere ;).

  6. You are seriously the best hostess everrrrrrr!!!!! Rachel was one lucky girl this weekend!
And that’s so cool you had a foodie celeb sighting!!! I once saw star jones (during her ” the view” days) and totally geeked out and was pointing and she took her champagne glass and looked away. What a 😖😖😖😖😖😖 not a fan!!!
Hope you have a great day! Man this summer is flying😳🙈

  7. Looks like a super fun weekend! (I’m partial to ice cream and girl talks. 🙂 ) That waffle also looks amazing, but I’ve been craving waffles for like the past four months – ever since my cousin made waffles while we were visiting them – but we don’t have a waffle iron! Waaah!

I had a couple s’mores (microwave ones, not bonfire, unfortunately), and they were so good. They never fail to deliver for me, and they involve two of my favorite foods: chocolate and marshmallows! (That’s probably why! I can be such a ditz sometimes!)

I have never seen a celebrity in real life, but I have no doubt that if I had (or ever do!) I would do the exact same thing you did. “Should I say/do something? No. Yes! No, that would be too embarrassing. But this is your only chance! Oh well, too late now. I guess that’s a good thing?”

I’d choose Italian, as long as there weren’t too many cooked tomatoes involved. I like fresh tomatoes, but I can only have a certain amount of the cooked stuff before I’m sick of it. Weird, I know, and it’s kind of a new thing, so it might not last. 🙂 I haven’t had that much Indian food, but I think it would be too spicy for me. I think I would like their carbs though, lol!

  8. I wish I could kill peanut butter like you do! My family does not eat peanut butter enough so it’s only left to my snacks. But that’ll all change soon, and I’ll be downing that peanut butter! Okay I have a question for you! Is gnocchi pasta or potato? I have heard it is either one and it confuses me!

  9. I have to get my hands on some apple pie ice cream! They come out with the strangest/best flavors these days! This wknd I had some onion rings…so I guess they counts as heavy in a sense 😛
PS. what type of peanut butter do u recommend?

  10. You always eat the best food – I think I say that every post but it’s true. I love all the festivals you go to! Also, I have no idea who that famous dude is but I probably should? I would be that fan who sprinted after him and asked to take a picture. I have actually done that more times than I care to admit with celebrities.

  11. I love this. This is why your one of the few blogs still in my reader. No facades, no splenda content. This looks like such an epic weekend but I had the google the guy….sorry. Also. This is so random but I was going to say WHERE ARE THE GROUPON DINNERS? Then I remembered mama was out of town.

  12. i read this post title as “heavy hearts” at first and i was like OH NO WHAT HAPPENED but then it was okay because there was just a lot of really great food that happened. haha! glad to see you had such a good time!

  13. Oh my goodness, Alison! I just started following you, and I saw this post and had to comment…I used to watch Food Network a lot, but we don’t have cable anymore, so I haven’t in awhile and haven’t kept up on all the Iron Chefs, etc. But, you with that celebrity? THAT IS SO ME!! (That wasn’t yelling, just a freak-out, lol!) Oh my gosh, I just kept laughing, because, *if* I ever saw a celebrity (I never have), I would do the exact same thing. 😛

  14. Definitely my favorite way to clean out the peanut butter jar! 😉

I’m not sure what I’d do if I saw a celebrity. I’d probably stare and look super awkward until one of my siblings told me to stop. 😀 And your apple pie icecream? Send me some, please??? On dry ice. JK. It does look really good though!
