I am currently soaking up some wonderful family time by the fire on this snowy Saturday evening. We had some comforting chili and cornbread, dessert, and are now watching Baby’s Day Out. It’s a pretty old movie (1994), but it never fails to make us laugh because it’s one of those unrealistic, ridiculous family comedies. The baby is so dang adorable too, so that’s an automatic plus.

Speaking of movies, this week’s Spill It Sunday is all about them! I’ve never been a huge movie person— I’m usually too antsy to sit for more than 2 hours. Like, how do some people just casually pop in a movie every night? Watching a movie has always been its own little special occasion in my mind, so I need to set aside a time for doing so. I also don’t have an interest in anything that is intensely confusing, scary, or vulgar. That covers about 85% of the films that are usually out in theaters, right? (Considering I get scared watching Harry Potter.)
Anyway, as I’ve said before, I really love typing up these posts. Arman is brilliant. Go check out his blog to see what other bloggers are spillin’!

2. Eight Below — It miiiight be because Paul Walker was in it (*sniff*), but I’ve loved this movie ever since I first watched it in fifth grade. I’m not even the biggest dog person, but I really enjoy the film’s lovely combo of action, romance, comedy, and drama, without being over the top with any of those.

3. The Hunger Games — Because I’m a stereotypical teenager, alright? 😉 And once I finish reading Catching Fire, I plan on watching that and hopefully loving it too.

Honorable Mention: Fireproof, Les Miserables (the old version), The Blind Side
Guilty Pleasure Movies:
1. The Princess Diaries — Both the first and the second movie! I’m pretty sure every girl my age has seen these movies at least once. It’s Anne Hathaway in her prime.

2. Rush Hour — It’s my home boy Jackie Chan and the hilarious Chris Tucker! How could you not laugh when watching them fight crazy assassins together??

3. Surf’s Up — This is probably one of the funniest cartoons I’ve ever seen. My mom even loves it because the sarcasm and mannerisms of the animal characters are unexpected and hilarious!

Worst movie ever:
I’ve disliked plenty of movies in the past, but the one that sticks out in my mind is Cloud Atlas.

Seriously, what the heck is happening in that movie? I think I went to go see it in theaters last year with my dad, and I closed my eyes half of the time because of the violence and subtle horror. My dad also had enough of it about an hour and a half into the movie, so we left. I’m sure a lot of people understood the meaning of this movie and loved it. It was just SO confusing to me because the plot jumped back and forth between different time periods of the past, present, and future. Yet there was some sort of underlying secret of time and life that intertwined all of the people and why they were all dying…. or something. I have no idea.
If I made a movie…
It would probably be about my grandparents’ generation. I think the drama and struggles of Asian families just a few generations ago is extremely fascinating and surprising in many instances. I’m blown away by some of the stories I hear from my parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents either through oral storytelling or memoirs that my relatives have written. The movie would give insight into family tensions and betrayals, discipline in Asian families, duties of the children, life during wars, conversion stories, and other juicy details. Can I get a filmmaker to help me make this happen? Daliza?! (<— my friend who wants to study film!)
Movies I Want to Watch:
- Silver Linings Playbook
- Catching Fire
- The Help
- Bridesmaids
Well, that’s about as deep as my movie background goes! Just call me a movie guru. 😉
So tell me: What’s YOUR favorite movie? Least favorite? Guilty pleasure movie? Any suggestions on which ones I should watch??
I hope you watch Silver Linings Playbook soon – it is soo good! I’d also recommend Perks of Being a Wallflower.
I love Disney Pixar movies, even though I’m almost 22! My favorite movies to just pop in on a raining day are Pitch Perfect, the Hunger Games, or any of the comedies we have in our apartment! I just saw The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and it was really good!
A ton of my friends loved reading and watching Perks! I just might check it out! My brother really loves Lord of the Rings, so he might see The Hobbit soon. That’s never been my style though 😉
Have a great Sunday, Kelsey!
I was forced to read the book and watch the movie “Anne of Green Gables” so I have always loathed everything about that. I hope to do both again soon on my own time, I am sure I will enjoy it!
My favorite movie is “Meet Joe Black” I don’t know what it is but I love that movie, and cry all the time watching it!
“The Princess Bride” makes my toes curl….but I am not a fan of that type of sense of humor…and the fact everyone gives me grief for not liking me – i’ll hate it even more lol!
Being forced to read/watch something often ends up being a turn-off. That’s too bad!
I’ve never heard of “Meet Joe Black,” but I also love tear-jerkers!
Have a nice Sunday, Alex!
O man! I have not seen baby’s day out in years and years!!!!! Blast from the past!
My favorite movies are parent trap (old and new), trouble with angels (old school Haley mills…definitely reccommend!), father of the bride 1 and 2, home alone, and my cousin vinny (so funny!!highly recommend as well!)
Worst movie holes and anything sci fi!!! And my guilty pleaser would be Hercules and old school Mary Kate and ashley movies (🙈🙈🙈) hope you’re having a great weekend! Stay warm!
Oh my gosh I forgot about The Parent Trap! I love that one too! I didn’t know there was a new one though.
I agree with you on most sci-fi movies— not my thang. 😉
I’ve never watched Cloud Atlas, but at least I know that it might be a tad confusing. However, I actually enjoy movies that make you think a lot and try to figure out mysteries and puzzles throughout the film. I enjoyed Silver Linings Playbook until the last half an hour or so, when it got really cheesy and predictable. I definitely recommend The Help, though; that is a great film. I watched the first Hunger Games movie, but since I’d read the books before that, I didn’t think the movie was very good. Oh well…
I do like a little bit of puzzle and mystery, but Cloud Atlas was just too much. And I understand that movies don’t always live up to the books. The books are always better!
I’m really beginning to think your a long lost…cousin or something? ha- Anne of Green Gables is by far the most favoured movie by my mum and sister. The only thing- How can you sit through ONE part of it- its like 5 hours!
I love the notion for a film if you made it- I find Asian or even Middle Eastern struggles into more Western Worlds fascinating- Have you read Chinese Cinderella, Falling Leaves (Adeleine Yen Mah) and also Paper Daughter (forgot the author)- Great reads!
Perhaps we’re, like, fifth cousins?! 😉 I definitely have to watch Anne of Green Gables a little bit at a time. That’s one of the only movies I’d watch on consecutive days.
I’ve read Falling Leaves! Such an amazing and heart wrenching story. I should check out those other two though!
Your “movies I want to watch list”….. all brilliant movies, and some of my favorites 🙂
Woo! I’ll be sure to check them out then 🙂
